I played the original when it launched on Wii U and the new entry had been building hype for a while. It doesn't disappoint and improves in a lot of great ways. Visually it now runs at up to 1080p but at a locked 60fps docked and then 720p/60fps in handheld, the original ran at 720p/60fps. The lighting, texturing and effects are also better. The single player mode has also been improved with more levels of varied difficulty and items. The addition of Salmon Run is a welcome defense against waves of enemies game. The single player game performs great with a mix of new stages and remixed retro (2015) stages. The new weapons like the Splat Duelies are great and feel good when playing. And just like the original game the promise of future free content is a welcome one that Nintendo didn't fail to deliver with on the first game.

A lot like Splatoon 1, but with a new story mode that allows you to use 9 different weapons in each stage and a new horde mode, Salmon Run. If you never played the first, then it's a must-buy. If you played the first one and liked it, then you will like this too, and it's worth the upgrade. If you didn't like the first one, then the second one won't change your mind. It's not quite Splatoon Deluxe IMO, as I do think it adds enough new content to be a competent sequel. The single player lasts about 7 hours through the first play-through, and then you can go back and replay all the levels with the different weapons, which adds some time too. The bulk of your time will be spent on online-multiplayer. I expect to get several hundred hours out of this title, let alone 60.

You don't need to have played Splatoon 1 to enjoy the story of Splatoon 2 (mostly because there isn't much of a story). The campaign is fairly short, but enjoyable with new weapons and mechanics being thrown at your continuously as your progress through the stages. The meat of the game is in the online play. Nintendo did a great job supporting Splatoon 1 on the WIi U with new weapons, maps, and content and I have full faith that they will support Splatoon 2 throughout it's life on the Switch. Having to use a secondary phone app is a nuisance in order to party up with friends or use voice chat, so it shows that Nintendo hasn't really improved their online infrastructure, but it's workable.

The sequel to the amazing Wii U gem, Splatoon 2 on Switch does everything the first game did, but better, and now with option to keep the fun wherever you are, and even setting up local multiplayer with other friends with multiple Nintendo Switch consoles. The game's main focus is the 4 v 4 online multiplayer of Turf Wars. Although using weapons, the objective isn't killing opponents. Rather splatting ink of your team over the map in greater quantity than enemy team's color. By end of round, the color of ink with greater quantity on the map wins. Splatting enemies grants bonus points only, and sets them back to respawn, making coloring of their area easier. It is a fast and frantic action. Character movements are fast. Played in third person view, this is a game for all ages. No violence or killing. Yet the intricacies of customizing your character with different clothes for style and different stats, as well as choosing different weapons of specific load outs give amazing depth and longevity to the game. Characters can transform into squids when pressing and holding one of the triggers, allowing you to swim fast over your ink, even allowing to climb over inked walls, giving levels diverse movement and vertical traversal. The game also features natural motion controls for aiming like in Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. But that is optional and may be turned off in favor of traditional right stick aiming. Weapons range from sniper rifles, machine guns, to big ink rollers and paint brushes, even color buckets. None of the weapons fire typical bullets, only ink of your team's color. They each have their stats and different grenade secondary fire, as well as a chargeable special attack. Developers confirmed free DLC for one year, like they did and fulfilled with first game. Multiple new maps and weapons will be released, keeping the game new and fun for longer without need to shell out for DLC or season passes. Single player story is also included. Similar to first game but now with different weapons allowed intrinsic to the levels they are featured. The story is fun and levels feature platforming and plenty of weapon action. As well as some incentive for exploration and score chasing for replay. Visuals now run in higher dynamic resolution than first game, along with higher definition textures. This is no 4K piece like other consoles, but ironically will wow more people regardless of their gaming interests due to how sharp and color visuals are. With varied hue that surpasses even Pixar animations. Unfortunately, only one person can play per console. Yet multiple consoles can connect online or locally for 2 to 8 player multiplayer sessions. There are league and ranked multiplayer modes online as well for those more hard core and competitive players, with varying objectives other than the ground coloring. New too for those fans of online coop survival modes (a la Horde), is Salmon Run, where 4 players locally or online work together to survive against waves of enemies and boss fights, raking up points for hard to earn but very rewarding items. I highly recommend this game for fans of the first, as well as to anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch. Or those looking great new online experiences different than yearly released recycled shooters. Original game was official winner for Best Multiplayer game of VGA of year it came out. This sequel is better than original.

The first Splatoon was an excellent game to begin with, and the sequel some how managed to be even better. The single player campaign is a lot of fun and a great way to get a feel for how the game plays before going into multiplayer. Level progressions it relatively quick if you're looking to get into ranked play (minimum level 10) and you can upgrade much of your gear along the way. I also found saving enough money to purchase those upgrades wasn't a huge grind. I only have two gripes about the game, that I share with the original: - Turf war is a lot of fun, but it gets very repetitive. Some new and interesting game modes in multiplayer would really help break up the monotony. - The motion controls are very finicky and difficult to work with. I disabled these as soon as I was able to.

This title comes down to a single question: Did you play Splatoon 1 on the Wii U? Yes? If you enjoyed it: Get this. It is everything the first game offered and more. Better balanced, finely tuned Splatoon. If you didn't like it: This probably won't change your mind. It's a much more refined experience, but it's still Splatoon If you missed it on the Wii U? Get it. It's a completely unique experience with a completely unique style. Great for pick up and play sessions, ESP. with the Switch's portability and sleep functionality.

This is a shooting style game where even missing your opponents or never getting into a firefight still lets you contribute to your teams victory. For the more casual but competitive gamers, there is the Turf War, where two teams compete to cover the ground with their ink color; while the game does determine a winning team and losing team, you'd have to make an effort to see your record through the mobile app, and even then, it only tracks the last 50 matches played. For the more hardcore competitive gamer, there are ranked battles, which consist of three rotating game modes; here players are assigned letter grades, letting players show off their skill levels and making sure games are more evenly fought by grouping players of similar skill. Lastly, there is the coop mode, Salmon Run; in this, teams of 4 battle against hordes of computer controlled enemies. There is a single player mode, but it serves more as an extended tutorial and training ground for practicing with various weapon types than a full fledged game mode. Once a month, there is a Splatfest, during which time, the only competitive mode is the Turf War; every player chooses a side to decide very important debates like ice cream vs cake, and then they go head to head to support the superiority of ice cream vs the right to have questionable opinions. For a community and multiplayer driven game, Splatoon 2 has some unfortunate design choices/limitations. There is no single console multiplayer; every player must have their own Switch and game. Playing with your friends means you have to host a private lobby, play ranked, or be okay with the potential to be on opposite teams. Voice chatting is limited to a mobile app and is not supported by the game/console itself. Salmon Run is on a schedule which means playing coop with strangers online is not always available, although it can be played locally with friends in the same room. Ultimately, the game is fun, but it has issues that could be deal breakers for some people.

Splatoon 2 takes the original game and continues to enhance with new gameplay and weapons while holding to core tenets that made the original so great. That said, online play on the Switch seems to be limited to the new online solution from Nintendo that requires a monthly subscription. That is a bit of a hit for me as the service is still in beta as well as considering the game has no offline component with bots. There is a single-player portion of the game and some modes can be played wirelessly, but that requires multiple Switch consoles. Both good and bad can be said, overall it's still a great game but the multiplayer limitations through a paid-for model might affect your purchase decision.

Nintendo knocked it out of the park again with Splatoon 2. Splatoon 2 is a team-based shooter where the objective is to cover the map with as much of your team's ink as possible. The weapons are diverse, there's so many great pieces of clothing and Salmon Run is a great minigame. The campaign plays similar to Splatoon on the Wii U's was but it's still a good story. Most of your time will be spent playing the multiplayer, especially ranked once you reach level 10.

This game is fantastic. Its colorful as well as engaging. The game is about some inklings who just want to be the coolest squid ever. There are multiplayer game modes, co-op horde mode and single player story mode. What I did not like about the single player is it feels like a tutorial. But the rest of the game is just awesome. The tactics in this game in order to achieve victory have to be spot on. Which means this game is not only for kids but adults alike.

Shooter genre reimagined by Nintendo becoming an awesome game. Quick 3 minute rounds in the regular mode. Last 20 seconds can overturn everything. Never give up till the fat cats make the call. Maps are on rotations. Well made single player mode that also serves as a testing ground for the different kinds of weapons available. Really nice co-op horde mode (ink the walls!) addition to the game but its on a schedule (3 days per week) if your playing alone.

On the surface, Splatoon 2 looks like a port of Splatoon 1, but it does not take much time with the game to start noticing differences. The first noticeable change is GamePad functionality being moved to screens that get toggled with the X button. While the lack of a persistent minimap during online multiplayer is annoying, the expanded menus in the Inkopolis Square (the main hub area) and Octo Canyon (the single-player hub world) offer quick access to a lot more options than were accessible from the GamePad. The new single-player campaign picks up where Sp1atoon's left off as far as gameplay. Early levels reintroduce old mechanics, but the game quickly moves to introduce new level mechanics and new weapons that were previously only usable in single-player if you bought Splatoon amiibo, or were excluded from the single-player entirely. While boss battles continue to follow the three-phase Nintendo formula, they all feel sufficiently different from Sp1atoon. The standard online multiplayer modes are the same, but the new stages change up the game a fair amount. While some have seen a disappointing increase in un-inkable surfaces, others have incorporated mechanics from Sp1atoon's single-player stages to offer more ways to get around the map. Some of the new stages feel smaller than a lot of Sp1atoon's stages, but they also feel more manageable by four-player teams. The new special weapons are arguably the biggest game-changer in competitive multiplayer, since a lot more of them become more effective when coordinated with team members. The new co-op multiplayer horde mode, Salmon Run, is the biggest unique addition to Spla2n. It puts teams of four players against waves of enemies of varying sizes, with a certain number of items that must be collected from bosses before the wave ends to proceed. Your weapons get randomized every round, which seemed annoying at first, but I grew to appreciate since it ensured the team always had a good balance of offensive and defensive weapons, and made each round feel different since my role on the team would change depending on which weapon I got. My only complaint about Salmon Run is that it is only accessible at certain times (it is the only mode that is ever completely inaccessible). My guess is they did that so people would not all leave competitive multiplayer to play Salmon Run, but it feels like Salmon Run is rarely available during the times I want to play, and I dislike the idea of having to schedule my day around the game's arbitrary schedule. I have not had a chance to try out the local multiplayer or amiibo functionality, so I will not comment on that. The last thing I will bring up is the Nintendo Switch Online app. As a voice chat solution, the advantages over other voice chat apps barely outweigh the downsides. However, SplatNet 2 is a fantastic service. Like the original SplatNet, it still shows you the current stage rotation, as well as some of your stats, but my favorite feature is the ability to buy gear (with in-game coins—there are no microtransactions) from the app. My time in the actual game is rarely spent checking the shops, so I like having the option to browse some in-game items when I am away from my Switch. In summary, if you never played Sp1atoon but were interested, Spla2n keeps the core of made Sp1atoon fun. If, like me, you DID play and enjoy Sp1atoon, Spla2n adds enough new features that I consider it worth purchasing. The only notable downside is the lack of a persistent minimap, but that does not outweigh all the new content.

After loving the first game, this sequel is more of the same with extras. The new modes and weapons are a nice addition and there’s lots of gear/stats to keep grinding. The game is nice to pickup and play for short bursts or get addicted to for hours. If you liked the first one, this is a good replacement. Recommended for sure.

Improves on a lot that the first game started. Better online connectivity, parties with friends (via the app) and such. New weapons and clothes have been added. New hosts as well. And the story mode is quite decent. Though the boss battles aren't as inventive or fun as the first game, don't let that deter you, they're still very fun. I usually play online with friends following me in and combining that with the app that has an online store separate from the one in game which makes getting new clothes quicker, easier, and sometimes a rush to get enough money to buy them before the timer on them runs out. 8/10 score for me.

    Joyous 1st person shooter

I don't like 1st person shooters. OK, I loved Doom when it first came out but then we were suddenly swamped in a sea of Doom clones on every format and it became nauseous. Until Goldeneye of course, which was a game changer and I loved it but then we were swamped in another deluge of clones and followers. Halo? Yawn. Duke Nukem? No. Call of Duty? Naah. So imagine my surprise when I fell in love with original Splatoon on the Wii U. It just took something so boring, dusty and cliched and flipped it. The whole splatting ink mechanic revolutionized things. Marking your territory, chucking buckets of ink around, splosh and splat. Amazing. However, I hate sequels. You pay a lot of money for a great game, it's a great game so it makes lots of money and the producers think "Hmmm, lets add a couple of features, change a few maps and graphics and resell it as a sequel". You pay the same amount of money for the same game again. So why do I love Splatoon 2 despite it being exactly the sort of thing I despise? It's not the improved graphics and frame-rate and resotution because that kind of thing bores me. It's not a radical reinvention, it is more of the same, so I should be annoyed that I have bought it again despite the new weapons and courses and solo campaign. I think it just has so much charm, energy and joie de vivre that even an old grump like me can't knock it. SPLAT!

I never played the first Splatoon, but I decided to purchase Splatoon 2 for the Nintendo Switch because I have 3 other friends who are playing. The game has little customization in regards to the physical appearance of your character, but it makes up for it in game play. The game is really fun when played with friends and the single player mode is entertaining as well.

This game is extremely fun to play online. In order to access the real competitive game types, you must reach level 10 in order to do so. One bad thing I must say is that it takes forever to level up in the game but regardless, it’s fun to play. Salmon Run is also a fun survival game type that further increases its replay value. A must for switch owners!

Let me just say that I have had tons of fun with Splatoon 2, probably even more so than the first game. While this game isn't too different from the first game, it takes the things that worked and refines them. This game is decent as a single player experience, but absolutely fantastic (splatastic) as a multi-player one. Since Zelda, there hasn't been much on the Switch except Mario Kart, and ARMS, but Splatoon 2 is the first great multi-player experience for the console.

If you were a fan of the first title on Wii U, then you know exactly what to expect from this game. A true sequel in every sense of the word, this game is a great time once you truly get the hang of it. Motion controls are wonky and take some getting used to, but otherwise, the gameplay will leave you hooked for hours.
