I've been playing splatoon a few weeks now and I have to say I'm very impressed. I know it was released back in 2017 but it still has active players online and it is a lot of fun to play. It's a much different style than most shooters and that is refreshing. It is more laid back and goofy so it's easy to just have fun and not take it too seriously. I personally would buy it for the listed price, however my fiance would like it to be a bit cheaper.

Extremely fun, somewhat annoying online play

Having never played the first splatoon I didn't know what to expect. I am enjoying it a lot. The online play has been great. However, how they have it setup is annoying. Maps are rotated every hour. (2 per hour). Regular play is always turf wars. Ranked is 3 different modes, which also change every hour. If you are hoping to play with friends good luck. Because you'd really have to have league play unlocked which requires you to have a B- rank in ranked matches.
Other than the annoying way online is set up, they game plays great and is a blast to play.

I played the original Splatoon for almost eight hundred hours and got the sequel on day one without hesitation. This game is a must buy for any Switch owner from the most hardcore, competitive gamer to the complete novice. You are ranked according to your skill level so that you will always be able to compete. I wasn't a huge fan of the single player mode in the first one and the sequel is no different. Keep in mind that you will have to pay $20 per year to play this online which I believe is a must for this game.

Many reviews have already addressed how awesome this game is so I will state the only negative of the game that is objective and not just a subjective bias. You cannot play this locally on the same console so 70 percent of the game will need nintendo switch online in order to be able to actually play it. It is advisable to go for the $20 option as that is yearly and cheaper than the monthly options combined. If you do want the game, just be wary that you will have to pay more than just the cost of the game if you don't already have the membership.
Here are the huge positives that I do believe outweigh the negatives. This game breathes new life into the FPS genre with the ink mechanic (search online for an explanation since there is a lot to it). Also really cool weapons that are either really unique from each other or subtle differences between the same category of weapon that will let you easily accommodate for your type of play-style in shooters. This is the definition of a game with a low level of skill needed to play the game casually and have fun with it but rewards you with tight and deep game play plus a huge ceiling of skill to be able to compete competitively at the game

Nintendo's take on shooters

Splatoon 2 is a shooter unlike games such as Call of Duty.
You run around the map shooting, spraying, and painting ink all over the place.
Since the game portrays what are essentially paintball fights, you may be more comfortable getting this for a kid over something like Call of Duty.
The goal is to cover as much of the map with your teams color.
Each match lasts just a couple of minutes, but that's perfect if you want to get a quick match or two in before leaving for work, school, or wherever.

My go-to shooter is Overwatch but this is a nice alternative when on the go or just playing casually. I haven't played the single player mode much but online is a blast due to the short (3 minute) matches. Communication between other players is almost non-existent, but I think that helps the community not become toxic. I wasn't a fan of the motion controls, but was glad they could be turned off. I would recommend this game for people looking for a casual shooter that you can take on the go and play competitively on even slower internet speeds.

As someone who is not a fan of shooters in general, I bought this game because I was interested in the concept. I figured I could at least enjoy the single player story if nothing else. Well I was wrong. This game is extremely fun. The core concept is about covering ground rather than getting kills so even people with bad aim can contribute greatly. But I actually enjoyed the ranked modes a ton. It's addicting. And the horde mode called Salmon Run is the best of all. Highly recommended even to people who are skeptical if it's for them.

So you can play this local multiplayer, but only if you both have a Nintendo switch and a copy of this game. My boyfriend and I bought a second switch and 2 copies of this game so we could play. You can team up, but joining each other's battle games is a bit of a process, and it doesn't mean that you'll always be on the same team, just in the same battlegrounds. Salmon Run is fun but only available on specific days. No co-op for the story mode. Team Battles still pairs you with/against people that are 10, 20, or 30 levels above you cause I assume there are not enough people to play otherwise, but that makes it very difficult to compete, and therefore progress.

A strong follow-up to the Wii U original

Splatoon 2 offers enough variety and new gameplay components to make this sequel a worthy purchase for any Switch owner. Salmon Run is a challenging and exciting team-based horde mode, online matches are fast-paced and cycle through two new stages every other hour, and there's tons of gear and weaponry to arm your Inkling with. The story mode adds some new gameplay mechanics not present in the original Splatoon, though a few of the bosses and level motifs are remixes from the original and thus do not stand quite as strong as the rest of the game's offerings. If you missed out on the original Wii U game, Splatoon 2 is a perfect entry point to the wacky ink-based shooter. If you played through every Splatfest in the original game, there's still plenty of fresh content that makes this sequel worth the purchase.

Splatoon 2 is a lot fun to play. Even though it is not that much different from Splatoon my kids enjoyed the game very much. I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5 because the price seems too high for a game that is not much different.

This game truly amazed me. My son and I play it together and have a blast. Unfortunately you need two separate switch consoles to be able to play together, but luckily that wasn't a problem with us.
Buy it! huge community and very fun maps where you'll play against tons of people. I love the unique idea of using paint as a weapon. the goal isn't to just simply kill the other team, the goal is to cover the entire map in your teams color.. and kill the other team. at the end it calculates how much is covered and declares a winner..

This is a great game as an alternative from the standard first person arena shooters out there. This is super kid friendly. The characters are cartoony and its main objective is to paint as much of the arena in your team's color as possible and less on "splatting" your adversaries. You do need a good wifi connection if you are going to play as you get temporary bans from playing if you drop out of a match intentionally or not. There's lots to unlock and customize and should keep you busy for a while. good game!

I never got around to playing the original Splatoon on the Wii U. I bought it for my son but did not play it myself. I can tell you right now that Splatoon 2 is worth a purchase. Heck, I have 3 copies, 1 for each kid and 1 for myself. We love to play Salmon Run together and my daughter and I play League Battles in pairs. We have an amazing time playing together. My daughter is not a huge gamer and she has put in over 55 hours into this game herself. I can't stress enough how fun this game is. Do yourself a favor and buy it!

This is my first Splatoon game so I'm judging it based on what I've experienced so far. In terms of game play its fluid, fast pace and addicting which is surprising for a shooter coming from Nintendo however there's some issues I can't get over it.
For a multiplayer game, there's no split screen or party based multi player vs which seems counter productive for a Switch marketed for multiplayer fun. The second issue is there's a small rotation of maps to play and that it changes every hour. LIKE WHY!!!!! This makes Splatoon more of a short bursts type of game instead of something for long sessions.
Overall Splatoon is a good game and I still play Splatoon when needing to get a quick game in before work but this is not my go to game when at home as it can be repetitive.

As a fan of the previous Splatoon, I was very excited for a sequel to arrive in the future and as I've got a chance to finally get my Switch & this game, I admit that it was worth the wait! It plays as good, even better actually, as the first game and has some addictive new modes and improved competitive play along with a better story mode. Would totally recommend this to both new players and fans of the franchise and recommend this as a first game to pick up if you're still looking for a Nintendo Switch.

I played the first Splatoon on the Wii U and loved it. The feeling quickly died down because I don't have an infinite stamina for playing turf war. I put probably 30 hours into it.
With that in mind, when I saw that a 2nd one was coming out, I got really excited - especially when Nintendo announced the mode Salmon Run (it's like a tower-defense game, but you are the one that needs to stay alive). I got Splatoon 2 almost at launch. It plays pretty much identically to the first game. This is a plus because it feels so natural with the motion controls after 15 minutes or so. After playing Breath of the Wild, I had to get used to the right thumb stick not changing the camera vertically at all. It was a quick transition though. The turf war mode is more fun than the first game because they balanced out the specials and weapons better - there's no more invulnerability. Playing online is practically perfect connection-wise. I almost never lose my connection. I did have some problems when I had a friend over with his system and we were using the same wi-fi. One of us got dropped often for a few hours there, but it got better eventually. Salmon Run is a blast. I like PvE modes more than PvP, and so this is a welcome treat. Blasting salmonids is so satisfying. The boss salmonids can be super tough though - especially if there are more than one in an area. The difficulty slowly ramps up to where you're winning about half of the runs, and so it stays challenging. The game looks great and plays great. It's locked at 60 FPS for those who care.
On to the bad and picky things. Let's start with the bad:
YOU CAN'T PLAY SALMON RUN WHENEVER YOU WANT!!! This is a poor decision. I can sorta see how Nintendo wants it to be "part of the culture of the game" or "realistic for the game," but it's a video game - a video game about kids that turn into squids and shoot ink out of super soakers. That's not even remotely realistic. I didn't buy a game to suffer through "working hours" being a real thing. I hope Nintendo patches this garbage out. The game mode that is actually new and for which I primarily bough the game is only available at certain times. And it isn't like a hours every day, it's more like for three 24-hour periods each week.
One more bad: Gaining levels takes forever, and you have to gain levels to unlock all the guns and modes that are available. Sure, unlocking things makes sense. You play the game more, you can use a wider variety of things. But the amount of time it takes to get to level 10 (which unlocks ranked mode) is ridiculous. Getting to level 10 from level 9 takes 17,000 exp. In the first game it was 10,000. Each round gets you 800 if you lose and 1400 if you win. So, with 50% wins, you're looking at an average of 1,100 each round. So only 15-16 games to get from 9 to 10. With each round lasting 3 minutes plus in-between time, you're looking at about 50-55 min. That is just for one level at the early stage of the game. It is similar between levels 6-9 as well. It takes about 6-8 hours just to unlock the ranked mode. Then you have to play that a bunch to unlock league mode. Getting to level 10 doesn't even unlock all of the weapons. They keep unlocking until level 28-30. You're not looking at about an hour per level at that point. It'll be 62,000 exp to get to level 30 from 29. It will take about 3 hours of turf war (58-ish rounds) to gain that one level and finally unlock every weapon. If you like playing the game with the weapons you have, then this really isn't an issue and the ranked modes give more exp, but still. What if I want the weapon that unlocks at level 25? Do I put in 30 hours into the game before I get what I really want out of it?
Picky things:
You have to watch the two squid stars tell you what the level are every time they change. Ever time I watch it I think: "I, nor anyone I know would stop or start playing this game because of what levels are available. We don't care enough to warrant this interruption. Just let me play the game."
Getting voice chat to work over a phone works fine... but the app drains your battery like crazy because the screen has to be on.
While the single player has a bit more than the first game, they could have done so much more with it. I don't want to play Splatoon-themed Mario level for every level. Man, I'll even take an escort mission instead of the same platforming over and over.
With all of that being said, don't get me wrong. I like this game a ton. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars and recommending it to anyone with a switch. The game is good. I just want it to be great - a game where I don't have to turn a blind eye to some obvious flaws... and I want to play Salmon Run whenever I want.

I can't tell if I'm a kid or a squid. This game is a lot of fun. It's like the first game but with some improvements like new weapons, abilities, and game modes. It runs well on the Switch in docked and undocked modes.
