We loved this movie, felt it was a great Star Trek film. Nowadays people on the internet are so down on things. Everyone is a critic and thinks they can do things so much better. For some reason lots of Trekkies had bad things to say about Beyond. As a long term Trekkie both me and my wife enjoyed this movie immensely. We liked it better than the last one. With this film they came up with an original story not tied to the 'prime' Star Trek universe. (ex: the last one had Khan from the original show). It's a good movie and we will enjoy it for years to come. I enjoy this cast even though in my heart I didn't think I would accept anyone but Shatner as Captain Kirk. Zach Quinto as Spock is amazing as usual, we hope to see more out of this version of Star Trek.

First I will state that at the age of 55 I am probably more Star Trek than Star Wars in terms of my fandom. I do love both series but I am a huge fan of the characters in Star Trek. The reboot with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban is extremely well done in both production and story these last three films have done much to expand on the 50 year legacy of this franchise. The loss of Leonard Nimoy is played out with a true affection for the first group and it allows long time fans to say good-bye. As for the story at hand it is well told and played by all hands. Justin Lin did an wonderful job helming this edition and the cast as always were excellent in all respects. I loved it and can't wait for the next adventure of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise.

I'm a true Trekkie. When the new Star Trek movie came out, I was skeptical. But I love how they made it possible to have a whole new story line. They don't have to stick with the original Star Trek Bible, since they changed the time line. Brilliant. Having said that, the first "new" Star Trek movie was fabulous, was a little disappointed in the second one, since they "borrowed" the story from the original second Star Trek movie. I still liked it, but wish it wasn't so close to the original story. This movie is fantastic. The special effects are spectacular, and there's just enough comedy to keep you entertained, but it doesn't detract from the story. I highly recommend this movie for any science fiction geek. Proud to say, I'm one.

I got to watch this third installment in the current Star Trek Film Series Re-Boot a few months ago on the big screen. Since I only saw it once, I promised myself to buy a DVD or Blu-Ray copy as soon as it hit the stores, which I estimated to be around November of 2016. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised when it was released on home video sometime in late-October instead. Fortunately, Best Buy's prices were quite reasonable and much lower versus other retailers. So, I opted to get a Blu-Ray copy in a nifty steel box, which was just a few dollars more than a DVD version. The Blu-Ray two-disc variant had loads of special features and extras. Great value for money, indeed, for this blockbuster Trek film commemorating the Franchise's 50th Anniversary!

Classic Star Trek into many camera tricks

The story was great but my problem with the movie is the fact that they feel the need to add so many bells and whistles. They tend to take away from the story which really is a good one. I don't really mind the tricks but either I am getting old or they do way too much on all the special effects. I tend to get so involved in the stuff that I miss the story of what this movie is trying to convey. I'm from the TOS era and was amazed back then with the technology, that was so realistic, we are using some of it today. What they are showing in moves today, I can't even imagine us going into their technology, ever. Maybe that's what the older population thought back then, so what do I know? Anyway, Star Trek Beyond is a great story gone too much stuff for my taste. By the way, I am over 50. I may be that older population, today.
P.S. I know computer generated visuals are the terminology in what we called it back then camera tricks but I do age myself.

The new Star Trek crew has jelled nicely in this movie after a feeling out period in the last 2 movies. I like that it was a new enemy and new situation more akin to something the crew would run into in the original series where they were largely in unknown space. I was very happy to see Bones and Spock get some quality screen time together complete with banter similar to the original TV show. All and all a great Star trek movie with the usual AAA special effects and action you would expect. Even people who know little to nothing about Star Trek will find a compelling sci fi action popcorn flick here. Lastly, the white skinned alien girl was a wonderful breakout character. I hope we see her again in future Trek movies.

Admittedly, I have never really had a fascination with Star Trek growing up. Most episode of Next Generation seemed pretty slow and too esoteric for me to really jump into it. It wasn't until the 2009 reboot by J.J. Abrams that I found genuine interest in the franchise. Since then, Justin Lin has taken over and I must say this train is running pretty well and Star Trek Beyond is a solid addition.
I didn't see this in the theater so and purchased the movie in 4K. Regarding the actually video quality I though it was "good" but the cinematography didn't have the glossy crisp look like JJ's previous 2 which I was a fan of. The colors are a little more on the flat side but the story and characters are engaging enough to make that a nitpick. I would say this is a good one to purchase if you are a completest and a little more than passively enjoy this movie series.

Good Action Movie, A Bit Beyond Believable

As a Star Trek fan, I wasn't really looking forward to the Star Trek Beyond movie enough to see it in theaters. The reboot franchise is not as much Trek as it is Action/Adventure. Not that that is bad, but it is missing the soul of Trek. There is no real message or intriguing scifi story. I would classify it as Science Fantasy.
Yet the story has some compelling aspects and if you leave your brain at the door, the action and story will draw you in. Crazy action, great stunts, seamless special effects and a very capable soundtrack and audio mix is nothing to snuff at. It's all great!
I viewed the HD blu-ray (no UHD player yet) and saw no really obvious flaws in the transfer nor any grips in the audio track.
The disc and case came shipped in a very satisfactory packaging and arrived quickly and without any damage. I would recommend the movie and Best Buy for the purchase experience.

Great Legacy for Anton

I was so pleased while watching, that Anton Yelchin's character Pavel Chekov had so much screen time. His time came so suddenly, no one could have known there wouldn't be any more chance later, so it was a stroke of luck that his character was in as much of the foreground as he was.
While I still yearn for more Roddenberry-an stories and morals, I feel like we may be getting closer. It's important for Star Trek to not become just another exciting action franchise. It's roots are as stories of morality and the "human" condition. I hope it continues on track toward its beginnings, while still managing to hold its viewers captive with its excellent execution.

"Beyond" Not Best but Very Good

"Star Trek Beyond" is the third film in the rebooted series starring Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, and while it suffers in comparison to the first two, it is nevertheless a very entertaining piece of escapism. Directed by Justin Lin (he cut his film making teeth in the "Fast and Furious" franchise), the story lacks the philosophical complexity regarding the nature of identity and evil of "Into Darkness," as well as a stellar star turn by Benedict Cumberpatch, but it does deliver enough visual eye candy and plot twists to keep you watching without complaint. The blu ray edition of the film that I purchased is a first rate transfer, naturally, with great sound some reasonably interesting Special Features. I picked it up as a Deal of the Day at a great price. If you are a Star Trek fan, old school or new, you will probably want to add this title to your collection.

First - I have to say - I like the reboots. I enjoy seeing new adventures with Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the crew. Though I do wish the films had more in common with the original series or the first 6 movies rather than the flashy displays they have become. But, that being said, I liked this outing better than the previous one (Mostly because of the horrible miscasting of Khan - not that BC is not a great actor but sadly, he is no Khan)
So from a Khan-free perspective, this movie has some typical outer-space thrills and touches on the toll the 5-year mission is taking on the crew and captain.
The always amazing Idris Elba delivers a fine performance as the villain - though, again, the plot swiss-cheeses a bit if you think about it too hard - so best to just sit back, relax, grab yourself a soda and some candy and popcorn and enjoy this little romp.
