Star Trek ideals, not extending Next Generation

Fans of Star Trek: the Next Generation rejoice! This is Picard. It is 20 years later. He is older, a civilian, still more inclined to think his way through problems, less able to employ physical solutions, but still the same characterization. Picard lives and believes the ideals of Star Fleet even though Star Fleet itself has backed away from them. And he still deeply misses his best friend, Data. But this series is not The Next Generation. New plot lines and a new crew (most of whom are ex-Star Fleet.). Characters from The Next Generation appear only if and when they fit the new story lines. (It was nice seeing Riker leading a fleet while he lounges comfortably in the captain’s chair). By the way, Seven of Nine from Voyager becomes a principal character as the series progresses.). Picard is also more character driven then action driven; although there is plenty of action. The principal protagonists are Romulans: but one of the good guys is a sword wheeling, martial arts specialist straight out of some Romulan version of Kung Fu. This first year is delightful. I highly recommend it. Reading the comic book mini series is not necessary for understanding TV series, but it does fill in back story.

The first three or four episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" are pretty slow-moving and full of exposition. There's a large conflict, I feel, between "fan service" and telling a complex, adult story. And they have to explain what Picard's been up to for 20 years--since the events of the "Star Trek: Nemesis" film. That means a metric ton of exposition that sometimes feels like watching homework, even to someone like me who read the "pre-Picard" novel they put out to make the exposition process easier.
Once the main story really gets rolling, however, there is a lot of good stuff going on right up until the ending--which seems to contradict the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The casting choices of the "new" characters includes a lot of non "sci-fi" actors who seem somewhat lost in the shadow of Picard and leery of the "Star Trek" experience.
You will see three members of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation in "Picard," plus some former Borg you will likely recognize.

The first episode felt as if it were edited to end within a certain length of time, as the story did not feel as fleshed out as it could have been. Dahj easily finds Picard on his vinyard...? The first episode should have been a director's cut or a two-parter as Dahj's existence/abilities left the viewer feeling confused; and do not say that was the intent. The following episodes are Trek worthy. The Blu-ray itself is light as far as extras are concerned. I got the blu-ray with an expectation of deleted scenes, short Treks (of which there is one) and behind the scenes footage and/or documentary style hidden camera-on-set coverage which I do not see. As I said, light. And, Elnor needs more screen time. Borrow a copy from someone who owns one, or have a watch party with your friend who has paid for CBS All-Access.

Sci-Fi the way it should be. Patrick Stewart defies time and content to bring us a story that more than holds the interest of true fans of the genre, like me. Sci-Fi is almost like a craving, but you want to see something that is not wholey cliched and tired. Tell me a story, and that's what this series does. Could not wait to get my copy after wtching it by streaming. If it goes to 4K, I will buy that one, as well. Make it so!

It's not the best Star Trek series but I highly recommend it for several reasons you see a lot of Star Trek: The Next Generation stars. Data, Hugh, Commander Riker, Deanna Troi and others.
Can not wait for season 2.
For thoughs who said that Picard does not act like Picard. Remember this takes place 15 years after Star Trek: The Next Generation. He is older and wiser.

Really enjoyed this continuation of The Next Generation series. Almost thought there would not be another season after the final disk but they did leave open the possibility for another and I look forward to that. They did not have a 4K version when I bought my copy but the picture and sound still looked and sounded terrific on my aging blue ray player.

Very good but not quite excellent experience with Picard Season 1. The story is compelling - while I'm not overly thrilled with the unnecessary harsh language at times & the addition of many uninteresting supporting characters... the core story of Captain Picard in a new era reuniting with a few of the original series characters is great... but hopefully season 2 removes many of the dull new supporting characters and goes back to Picard reuiniting with so many available great characters from all four Trek shows. Crossing fingers that this happens.

This is an excellent series for Star Trek Picard. I had not seen it on cable so I was glad to see that I could get it on Blue-ray. It is worth the money becasue of picture quality and sound. If you are a true Star Trek follower and have seen most of the movies, I would say that this is a great addition to enjoy and probably buy to watch over and over again.

I actually did not get a chance to see this when it aired, but figured it was going to be worth the purchase. I am glad I was right. Picard is one my favorites of any star trek series. This show has strong, and interesting characters, a solid story line, and stunning visuals. This is to star trek what Rouge one is to star wars....different but it's star trek.

I have always been a Star Trek fan. I really enjoyed this new series. I do not have the streaming service so I was very excited to be able to get it on Blu-ray. After reading the book a few things made more sense so I look forward to watching the series again. I would highly recommend this series.

Picard brings tng into the modern era. Beautiful effects and cinematography, with gorgeous backrops. The cast complemented each other amazingly and the actors blew the doors off their performances. Especially Patrick Stewart and Allison Pill. Some of the best, most compelling Television I have seen in a while.

If you are a fan of ST TNG, I think this is a must watch. I am a fan and enjoyed the series and felt the movies were hit or miss. Picard is on par with the best episodes of the series. It has many call backs to the movies as well as the series. I hope season two is as good as this season. Highly recommended

Loved it. Patrick Stewart even in his later 70's is a stellar actor. It kind of resolves Star Trek: Nemesis a bit. Data's destruction haunted Jon Luc. I was glad that this was addressed in the series. I look forward to new seasons and hope that Patrick Stewart is able to continue this fine work.

Awesome new series about Jean Luc Picard, who is now retired but is drawn into a mystery surrounding Data's daughter that he didn't know existed. He also finds that the Romulans are trying to kill her and her twin. Great story and a fun new series for fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
