Not Your Father's Vampire!

I admit to being very skeptical of what The Strain could deliver on FX ... I've seen way too many quality novels turned into watered down garbage on television (Under the Dome comes to mind). Fortunately in this case my fears were unfounded. The Strain is easily one of the best shows (if not THE best show) of 2014.
Clearly Guillermo Del Torro loves his baby, because it is evident from every aspect of the production of this show that he wants a faithful adaptation of the bestselling books that he and Chuck Hogan authored. I doubt without that kind of hands on approach that we would have the spellbinding production that we were fortunate to get as a mid-year 2014 treat!
So what's it about? Well vampires of course... but one of the coolest takes on vampires to come out in the past decade or more. Hogan and Del Toro take the thinking man's approach to a prospective Vampire Apocalypse with just enough of a scientific grounding to help the reader suspend disbelief. Punches are not pulled in this story. Child vampires? Billionaire trying to screw over humanity for a shot at immortality? Vampire manipulation of a fumbling government? Check, check and check!
We are treated to dealing with vampires from the perspective of a CDC medical team dealing with what they believe to be a viral outbreak that quickly spirals out of control as a vampire infestation overtakes New York City... this really is a "thinking man's" vampire tale that is told so smoothly that one could almost believe it was penned by someone of Michael Crichton's caliber.
There are numerous very colorful characters in the novel, and I'm pleased to say that the actors chosen for the television series do a GREAT job of matching those character roles, the acting is outstanding.
If you are a fan of horror or scifi you really owe it to yourself to try to catch The Strain and you won't be disappointed with the Blu-Ray set.. It is light on features (they are almost nonexistent with the exception of 'Satrakian's Lair' which will please some die hard fans) but each episode is given the super nice high bitrate Blu-ray treatment with superb MPEG-4 AVC video and DTS-MA audio.
I understand that Season 2 has been signed and I'm really hoping that the show picks up enough of a following to see it through to conclusion. Since the first season parallels the events of the first novel almost exactly there is hope that we could see the entire show concluded in three robust seasons.

I am officially addicted to The Strain my cousin had told me about it and I saw an episode on cable tv. I actually had kind of forgotten about it. I think I had talked with my cousin one more time and his review and the fact it was now on dvd(season 1). I decided I would look for it. I was in Best Buy one day and it was on sale for a very low price(thanks Best Buy)!!!! Well I went through season 1 in about two days. What I love about this show is it's darker than say Vampire Diaries. They have this character called The Master who feeds and infects his victims in a most unorthodox way. In appearance he is almost scary as the Master Vampire Barlow from the original movie Salem's Lot. It appears that this Master Vampire goes against the natural order of regular vampires and it seems that it has been decided by the Ancient Vampies is that the Master Vampire needs to be put down.-The D Blog

The Strain season 1 Review

I really liked season 1, it was a new take on horror with vampires which we all know needed to happen after all that Twilight stuff! In the Strain you don't just have a new take on how vampires get their fangs or in this case feeding tongues. But like always there is always an expert who knows how to take on the vamps! A lot of people will relate this series to the Walking Dead but there are differences between the two. All I can say is that this series is amazing and I love it; everyone will have their own opinions on how this series is. But this is mine!

I was pleasantly surprised by this series. I was skeptical going in because critics gave it bad reviews, but decided to give it a try when the majority of average viewers liked it. I really like the story line and I thought the acting was acceptable. The CGI effects are top notch. I am almost done watching Season 1, and Season 2 is sitting on the shelf waiting to be opened. I hope this series continues to be renewed to the end.

Well, I can't review the entirety - hey! I just bought the set! - but I'll get anything Guillermo "Hellboy" del Toro is involved with, and I watched the first two episodes. Dug the premise, dug the exposition, dug the foreshadowing, dug the camera work, and dug the effects. Vampires are my favorite monsters, so what's not to like? I award 4 stars only because I haven't watched it all yet, but I fully expect it'll get darker and darker and more involved so it's probably worth the full 5. When I get Season 2, I'll retrospect on Season 1.

I wish there would be more releases like this one
while it in no way compares to those 'other' mega releases
like the PLANET of the APES heads/busts
this set doesn't carry the BIG PRICE TAG either
it's a fun - (very) affordable set to add to your collection
----------
as far as the show is concern -
it's silly - but a fun way to kill a snowed in weekend!

When I first discovered The Strain I could not believe I was watching television. It was tense, shocking at times, and the tension kept building throughout each show and from show to show. A movie quality product on the small screen. Great cast, writing and outstanding special effects. I bought it so I could watch it all over again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first season of this series. It had a very good plot in a good bunch of scary moments. Look forward to the second season very much. It had a very creepy atmosphere about it...the main villain was horrifying...can't wait for the next season to start.Harley recommend to anyone who likes horror shows.

This show is full of surprises!! It is intense and gruesome at times but it always keeps you at the edge of your seat. Never a dull moment nor boring dialogue scenes. Has action, suspense, horror, and a thriller at its best. Great cast and you know its good when Director Guillermo Del Toro has his inspiration and imagination added into it. Would recommend to all that want to watch a entertaining and good show.

I like the Strain and I have seen most vampire films with only about half keeping me entertained. You will care about the characters. My only problem was how they switched one of the characters from season 1 to 2 (i you watch the show it will be obvious), let's just say the jury is still out on that one. Supposedly Del Tormo (Sp?) wanted to go in a different direction.

I enjoyed watching this series each week with my oldest son. We looked forward to each new episode. I liked that it was different from the traditional vampire series and each episode gave you enough past history so you would know what was going on currently. I bought this series for my other son as a Christmas gift.

Guillermo del Toro brings his best-selling vampire epic to television, with amazing results. While small-screen horror is certainly big at the moment, The Strain stands out for its excellent production values, casting and storylines. And it does not stint on the horror.

What started out slowly with the first few episodes is a show that has really turned the corner with it's acting and storytelling as well as F/X as the Master character really puts the element of the show over the top. Lot's of on the edge of your seats visuals and the heros are worth getting behind and cheering on. The 2nd season is a major improvement also. 4 Stars!

the books have been on my "to read" list for a while now, but the show is really good escapist fun. Dark, and don't eat while watching, as the gore factor can ruin dinner.
Good characterization that doesn't fall into cliche and TV tropes.
Of course, it'd been nice to have digital copies, but understandable at this price point to not get them.

Wow, this show is just incredible. As a huge zombie fan, I like this show a lot. It's basically vampires through a vampiric parasitic worm that becomes an epidemic throughout New York. Not too mention it's from the mind of Guillermo del Toro, so you can't go wrong there. Highly recommended viewing. Can't wait for Season 2.

I'm a big fan of the books and was pleased when they made the graphic novels. But I was so excited when I heard the Strain was becoming a mini-series. Although it is not an exact adaptation of the books I was more than pleased with how this was done. Great over all for any horror fan! Can't wait for the second season!
