Wonderful addition to a storied franchise
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Mario Odyssey is an absolute joy to play on the Switch. The graphics are beautiful and the music is fantastic. The addition of Cappy as a player 2 made playing this game entertaining for my husband and me as he could play an active part in the game. As a seasoned platformer, I found it easy to pick up but challenging to master. I am still coming back to this game, after three months of on and off playing, trying to find all the Power Moons. I would have liked to see Luigi like in Super Mario Galaxy but we'll see what Nintendo does with the upcoming updates. Overall, this game is deserving of the critical acclaim it has received. I absolutely loved it.

Better Than I Expected- Fast favorite
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Excellent graphics, quests/level difficulty ranges from easy to frustrating. ( I swear... I was lined up perfectly but nooo.. *ahem* ) A fun intriguing game for all age ranges (IMO) Surpassed my expectations of the cheesiness I had had unwisely anticipated. Has kept my squirrel-like family entertained -That's a feat in itself! Mario has come a long way since the days of *clears throat* the original Nintendo - glad to see all the vast improvements along with some "old school* style thrown in making it a fast favorite in our gaming household. One this mom doesn't mind getting roped into playing or playing on her own!

Mario at his finest
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game has it all - gorgeous graphics, great music, tight controls and, most importantly - fun! There have been some reviews saying that the game is too easy. That's only if you're going for the bare minimum to beat the game. The harder to locate moons are where the real challenge lies. And while you only need a couple hundred to finish the game, there are close to 1,000 of them in the game! This game is fun for everyone but the most jaded gamer. Kids, adults, casual and hardcore gamers will all find something to love about this game. Stop reading! Buy this now!

Best Mario to date
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Mario Odyssey is the best reason to go out and buy a Nintendo Switch right now. It is, hands down, one of the best Mario games ever made, and one of the best 3-D Platformers I have ever played. Even after you “beat” the game, there is so much more to do. The game manages to recapture the old, sandbox style 3-D Platformer that we saw in Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and games like Banjo Kazooie. Odyssey manages to update and modernize the concept, and tweak it to near perfection. No doubt about it, Odyssey is a must own. With that to say, I hope you enjoy my review for this incredible game! Story: Story has never been a Mario game’s strong suit. Odyssey isn’t too different. The game opens-up with Mario fighting Bowser, a fight which Mario loses. Bowser then kidnaps princess Peach yet again, only this time, he also captures Peach’s sentient hat, known as “Tiara,” and plans a wedding for him and Peach. Mario meets a sentient hat names Cappy. Cappy is able to take control of, and poses different creatures and objects (Mario meets the exorcist.) Mario and Cappy use an air-ship called the “Odyssey,” in order to trot the globe in a quest to sabotage Bowser and Peach’s sinister wedding. The story is very bare-bones, but it gets the ball rolling; once the ball rolls, it doesn’t stop. Presentation: Super Mario Odyssey is truly a feast for the eyes. Every kingdom you go to is a wonder to look at, from the cascade kingdom with its prehistoric look, to the Hispanic styles sand kingdom with its “Day of the Dead,” themed aesthetic, to the snow kingdom, the wooded kingdom and it’s sentient gardening tools, the luncheon kingdom (yumm,) and especially the New York inspired Metro Kingdom. Each kingdom that Mario visits looks incredible, and has its unique visual style. The texture and lighting design are also extremely impressive, the frame-rate is very solid. The music is outstanding. There is great variety in musical styles, and the game features many instrumental themes. You’ll hear very ambient sound effects in one stage, songs befitting of a beach in other stages, and even a folk-style song in the wooded kingdom. One kingdom has a Japanese palace inspired musical score; the music can get quite epic towards the last few kingdoms in the game, similar to the Super Mario Galaxy games. The game even features songs with actual singing, such as the surprisingly catchy “Jump Up Super star,” which you hear during a celebration in “New Donk City.” The sound effects also perfectly blended with the controls, and the gameplay. The menu is also very slick, and the Switch functionality allows you to pause the game and jump right back into it at any time. Presentation wise, this game is a winner through and through. Gameplay: Controls for Super Mario Odyssey are fantastic, and very intuitive. The controls for Mario are similar too how they have been in previous 3-D Mario adventures. Simply running around as Mario, and jumping is so much fun. My favorite new mechanic is the ability for Mario to roll like a ball, which is especially fun in the sandy and hilly areas. While some have had issues with them, I have found the joy-con motion controls to be precise and very fun. The camera in this game is much better than in previous titles, but it still has its occasional issues in certain areas. These issues are few and far between, however. The controls are all in all very responsive and as fun as ever. Compared to recent Mario games, Odyssey has a much more open-ended, sand-box design to it. As was mentioned earlier, you travel to different kingdoms such as the Cascade, Sand, Forest, Snow, Metro, Beach, Forest, and other kingdoms in order to chase down Bowser and his new lackeys, the “Broodal Bruddas, (bunny like creatures.”) Each kingdom has its own residents, and even interesting world-building aspects that flesh them out. For example, the luncheon kingdom has living utensils, while the snow kingdom has polar bears. The sea-side kingdom has snails, while the Metro Kingdom has actual people. These unique aspects make every kingdom exciting and interesting in its own way. The main gameplay itself consists of exploring these kingdoms, and searching for Power Moons (think the starts in Mario 64, or the jiggies in Banjo Kazooie,) in order to power up the Odyssey ship and travel to the next kingdom. You get acquire said moons by exploring every nook and cranny in the kingdom, solving little puzzles, fighting bosses, doing menial tasks, participating in minigames, and more. Some of the power moons are scripted, particularly early on, but most of them are not. For a game with such an open-ended nature, there is tons of variety to the gameplay. You might be controlling a T-Rex one moment, riding a golden lion another moment, balancing on a giant corn-cob, or even riding a motorcycle through the streets of New Donk City. The variety is stunning, and keeps the gameplay from getting boring. The real gameplay hook for Odyssey is hook in this Mario adventure is the ability to use Mario’s hat to control, and possess different objects, creatures, and even some people. It may seem a little weird and creepy at first, but the execution is ingenious, in a way only Nintendo can pull off. You can literally take control of several Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros, Fire Balls, Tanks, Frogs, and even a T-rex. You can even take control of certain inanimate objects, and even some of the humans in New Donk City. This switches up the Gameplay almost infinitely, but in a way that always feels very organic, introducing so many unique and clever moments that never cease to be fun. Just goofing off and experimenting with this mechanic is half the fun in and of itself. The boss fights, many of which incorporate the possession mechanic, are all very fun and well designed. The end-game fight in particular is a high point among the impressive array of boss fights that the game has to offer. One of the most surprising boss fights you will encounter is a dragon that looks like it’s straight out of Game of Thrones. While a few of the bosses are challenging, many of the fights feel rather easy, and are a breeze to defeat. Some of this is due to the fact that there is no longer a “game over,” as you simply loose coins when you die. The boss fights are still tons of fun all around. Speaking of coins, you can use them to purchase different outfits, power stars, and other goodies. Some of these outfits have some actual gameplay use, but many of them feel like window dressing, though it helps spruce up your ship none-the-less. What is so incredible about this game is that after the credits you, you feel like you have only just begun. The replay value for this Mario game is absurdly high, and the possibilities open-up a ton after you finish the story, which should take you around fifteen hours in and of itself. The gameplay is also perfectly suited for being able to play in small doses if you have a job and a busy schedule (as I do,) but you can also play to your hearts content when you wish to on the weekends. The Gameplay really is about as close to perfect as you could hope for a 3-D Platformer to be! Verdict: Super Mario Odyssey is a celebration of more than thirty years of Super Mario. The game encapsulates what Mario has always been about: Pure fun. More than that, though, the game innovates and surprises long after you “beat” it. I certainly see myself playing this game for several more weeks to come. This game is the number one reason to purchase a Nintendo Switch if you have not done so already (They’re still hard to find.) This game truly is the best 3-D Platformer I have played in years, even giving Galaxy 2 a run for its money, and it is one of the very best games that our favorite Italian plumber has ever been in. So, go out, buy this game, and participate in an incredible, one-of-a-kind, globe-trotting “Odyssey.” Cons: Easy initial difficulty Occasional camera issues Sub-par plot Pros: Beautiful visuals and design Amazing music Great sound effects Tight and responsive controls Wonderful Sand-Box style Mario Gameplay Incredible and ingenious level design and scenarios Quirky and fun characters Tons of variety Unbelievably high replay-value One of the best Mario games ever made Overall: 10/10

Excellent Mario adventure
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The game is extremely fun. Challenging but easy (is there such a thing???). Mixes new gameplay styles with old, very creative. One example is one moment you're in the 3D world, next you are in a 2D classic style on a wall (don’t worry, it’s not like you are constantly switching from 2D to 3D like in a previous game). Lots of fun activities, graphics are amazing, and collecting the different outfits for Mario to wear is ADDICTING!!!! Can be 2 player, but not in the way you’d expect. First player controls Mario, second controls his hat (the hat plays an important role in how the game is played). My 4.5 year old is still getting the hang of manipulating a controller but when he is controlling the hat it is much easier and he feels he is contributing. Overall extremely satisfied with the game. Honestly I bought this and Breath of the Wild at the same time. I expected BOTW to be incredible, and it is. Odyssey surprised me because I was expecting it to be good, but it far exceeded my expectations, and I got a little distracted from Zelda. Not going to lie... Last note is that it has great replay value. After you initially beat the game, there are still more things to do, more worlds to explore. I went after as many of the items as I could before moving on to the next world. I have to say I was pretty confident I had little left to do. Buuuuut.... once I beat the game, (it told me) there were sooooo many more items to get and things to do!

Mario Looks More Dapper Than Ever
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Why do I say that? Because he has the biggest wardrobe in Mario history with this game! Customize your outfits and explore a vast open world...wait this is only a level? Each level is so huge and filled with so many neat little things to explore, you'll really have lots of fun digging deep for hidden moons. Moons now replace the stars and sprites of old, and it's okay because Cappy, Mario's sidekick, need them to fly Mario to his next destination! The characters are all wonderful and if you have a friend or sibling or anyone who wants to join in, they can help out as Cappy in Assist mode. This game is definitely one of the best titles on the Switch for a reason, but for me, it just had SO MUCH replay value. I can never get bored! Get this game and enjoy it for the long haul :D

Best 3D Mario Game
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Clearly one of the best Switch games available. Arguably the best 3D Mario game ever made. Platforming feels clean and precise. The game is content rich and filled with plenty of platforming variety. Buying digital from Best Buy is incredibly easy. Get the code from your app and then input into the eShop website. Download should hit your Switch instantly.

Super Fun Game!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a HUGE Mario fan and I have to say that this game is extremely fun. I like how challenging it is and how it's a mix between the old games and completely new. The way you can go between being in a 3D world to being in a 2D world is fun and makes me reminisce back. Obviously the graphics are awesome and overall game quality is what you'd expect for a game made in this time period. I enjoy the fact that you can play it 2 player and the dynamic in how you play it is different. 1 player is Mario and the other player is his hat. You'd think that wouldn't be as fun but it honestly is. It's an important rule. (similar to how Diddy and Donkey Kong are). 10/10 would recommend this game to new and existing Mario fans.

On with the old and new
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Mario Odyssey brings back the nostalgia and enjoyment of the previous mario games and mixes in the new generation of gameplay the Switch has to offer. You can play this on the go, or plug it into the stand and play it at home on your tv. The controls and gameplay are reminiscent of the 64 version of the game. Graphics are smooth and silky, especially in the Metro City Stage where it looks like Mario is ina place like New York. Story wise, it’s the same song where Bowser kidnaps the princess and Mario needs to save her as always. The game can be finished in about 8-10 hours, but there’s a lot of exploration that can be done. If you’ve been a fan of the series, this is a must play.

It's a Me Mario
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The game is all that I expected and more. It is very well done and polished. Both in Handheld and docked modes the game plays flawlessly and have not experienced any frame rate drops. For all of those that complain about the graphics are just hating on the game. The game is beautiful with all kinds of stuff to observe. While it may not take a large amount of time to get through a board, there are all kinds of areas to explore as well as items to get. Maybe you can get through the game in a few hours, but I have spent more than 20 hours solving puzzles and completing tasks. Don't listen to the haters, if you have a Switch it is a must buy, well if you are into Mario games.

Hooked
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my nephew before getting it myself. I was hooked! This game makes you think, logically thinking as well as experimenting different ways to explore. I beat the entire game in 1 week. But this was just that, completing the game is much longer as there are many stars in each world that needs to be found and some are very well hidden. If you like adventure game and if like me you grew up with Mario 64- then you will enjoy this game.

Magical
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the Switch specifically for this game and it was worth every penny. I'm about 10 hours into the gameplay, but from what I've seen so far this will be a classic that sits well beside the previous Galaxy entries. The visuals are stunning, music beautiful and gameplay solid like usual. This game is more of an open world and less linear than the galaxy games which I like as it encourages exploration. A lot of new & exciting twists and turns in the Mario formula that I won't spoil. Totally worth buying a switch for. Enjoy!

The Next Evolution of Mario
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Mario's been around for over 30 years, and it's equal parts shocking and amazing to see how well he's doing. Super Mario Odyssey is a culmination of everything that makes Mario, and Nintendo, great. It's a game that anyone from 1 to 99 years old could enjoy, especially with the new Assist Mode that helps younger plays know where to go next, and it's also something new gamers and experienced games can enjoy alike. The gameplay is blissful perfection, with extremely unique levels that are fun to play around in and explore with tight controls. The kinds of moves you can pull off allow you to play the game in infinitely more ways than intended. This is all done with Mario's new trusty companion, Cappy. Cappy is essentially Mario's sentient hat. You can throw him in any direction to "cap"ture enemies, jump higher or farther, or break boxes and question blocks. There are also so many ways to play the game. Interested in motion controls? Try holding both JoyCons controllers separately. You can throw Cappy with a flick of the wrist. Want to play with a more traditional control style? Try putting both JoyCons on the included Grip, or buy the Pro Controller (my personal recommendation). Every control style includes HD Rumble, which makes the rumbles in-game feel very realistic in your hands, and Gyro aiming, which means you just have to move the controller around to aim (there's an option to turn this off if you'd like, I think Zelda and Splatoon do Gyro better). The story is also really good. You may think it's nothing more than Bowser kidnapping Peach, and technically you're right, but there are so many specific moments within the game that I'd highly recommend not spoiling for yourself. Graphically the game is stunning. Even though it only runs at 900p, the art style really works in its favor. I've played this game on a 55' 4K TV and it's one of the best things I've seen on there. You can actually see the individual hair's in Mario's mustache! If you own a Nintendo Switch, you owe it to yourself to get this game. It takes advantage of all the Switch hardware has to offer, it's extremely fun to play with all its unique levels and tight controls, and it has a pretty solid story for a Mario game. It lives up to all the hype surrounding it, and it's highly recommended.

If you enjoy Mario, what are you waiting for?
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a main-line Mario game. It's polished and fun and full of silliness. The control gimmick in this one is excellent and worth your time. The only thing holding it off of 5 stars is that the 2nd player assistance option is severely under-baked. I think I'd prefer they had left it off entirely, as it just disappoints.

Masterpiece
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I skipped the Switch but got the Switch 2 on the first day and after playing Tears of the Kingdom this was my number 2 in the list and what a beautiful experience, this is probably the best 3D Mario to the date. A lot of new mechanics combined with nostalgia from the NES, SNES, and N64 era make it perfect. SPOILER ALERT.................. the mushroom kingdom right in the childhood and the post-ending the story gameplay is like another game or a DLC. 10/10 no doubt about it.

Good, but kind of short
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great 3D Mario game. Beautiful graphics, with a great platforming mechanics, and great music tracks, that could* easily stand up next to Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine. *I say could because I only really have two gripes with the game. First is how short it is Story wise. I understand its a Mario game, and it can be hard to stretch out a story of rescuing a princess. Super Mario Odyssey just seems way shorter than expected. I was able to beat the story in about a day, only getting the bare minimum needed to move on to the next area. The second is the lack of variety with the bosses. You're introduced to the only 5 bosses you'll ever fight within the first few worlds, and then those 5 bosses are just re-used over and over for the rest of the story. Mechanics for these bosses don't really change either. they just add more things to dodge. Its for these reasons, I feel its not quite as memorable as Super Mario 64, or Super Mario Sunshine, but It's still a wonderful game, filled with nostalgia for old time fans, as well as a bunch of cool new content for new fans. All in all its a great game, just wish it was longer with a larger boss variety.
