I am enamored with this purchase. I was shocked at how tiny the cartridge is but it makes it all better. Such a space saver. The game plays extremely well. There’s no lag and I would highly recommend this to others.

    Best Mario to date

Super Mario Odyssey is the best reason to go out and buy a Nintendo Switch right now. It is, hands down, one of the best Mario games ever made, and one of the best 3-D Platformers I have ever played. Even after you “beat” the game, there is so much more to do. The game manages to recapture the old, sandbox style 3-D Platformer that we saw in Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and games like Banjo Kazooie. Odyssey manages to update and modernize the concept, and tweak it to near perfection. No doubt about it, Odyssey is a must own. With that to say, I hope you enjoy my review for this incredible game! Story: Story has never been a Mario game’s strong suit. Odyssey isn’t too different. The game opens-up with Mario fighting Bowser, a fight which Mario loses. Bowser then kidnaps princess Peach yet again, only this time, he also captures Peach’s sentient hat, known as “Tiara,” and plans a wedding for him and Peach. Mario meets a sentient hat names Cappy. Cappy is able to take control of, and poses different creatures and objects (Mario meets the exorcist.) Mario and Cappy use an air-ship called the “Odyssey,” in order to trot the globe in a quest to sabotage Bowser and Peach’s sinister wedding. The story is very bare-bones, but it gets the ball rolling; once the ball rolls, it doesn’t stop. Presentation: Super Mario Odyssey is truly a feast for the eyes. Every kingdom you go to is a wonder to look at, from the cascade kingdom with its prehistoric look, to the Hispanic styles sand kingdom with its “Day of the Dead,” themed aesthetic, to the snow kingdom, the wooded kingdom and it’s sentient gardening tools, the luncheon kingdom (yumm,) and especially the New York inspired Metro Kingdom. Each kingdom that Mario visits looks incredible, and has its unique visual style. The texture and lighting design are also extremely impressive, the frame-rate is very solid. The music is outstanding. There is great variety in musical styles, and the game features many instrumental themes. You’ll hear very ambient sound effects in one stage, songs befitting of a beach in other stages, and even a folk-style song in the wooded kingdom. One kingdom has a Japanese palace inspired musical score; the music can get quite epic towards the last few kingdoms in the game, similar to the Super Mario Galaxy games. The game even features songs with actual singing, such as the surprisingly catchy “Jump Up Super star,” which you hear during a celebration in “New Donk City.” The sound effects also perfectly blended with the controls, and the gameplay. The menu is also very slick, and the Switch functionality allows you to pause the game and jump right back into it at any time. Presentation wise, this game is a winner through and through. Gameplay: Controls for Super Mario Odyssey are fantastic, and very intuitive. The controls for Mario are similar too how they have been in previous 3-D Mario adventures. Simply running around as Mario, and jumping is so much fun. My favorite new mechanic is the ability for Mario to roll like a ball, which is especially fun in the sandy and hilly areas. While some have had issues with them, I have found the joy-con motion controls to be precise and very fun. The camera in this game is much better than in previous titles, but it still has its occasional issues in certain areas. These issues are few and far between, however. The controls are all in all very responsive and as fun as ever. Compared to recent Mario games, Odyssey has a much more open-ended, sand-box design to it. As was mentioned earlier, you travel to different kingdoms such as the Cascade, Sand, Forest, Snow, Metro, Beach, Forest, and other kingdoms in order to chase down Bowser and his new lackeys, the “Broodal Bruddas, (bunny like creatures.”) Each kingdom has its own residents, and even interesting world-building aspects that flesh them out. For example, the luncheon kingdom has living utensils, while the snow kingdom has polar bears. The sea-side kingdom has snails, while the Metro Kingdom has actual people. These unique aspects make every kingdom exciting and interesting in its own way. The main gameplay itself consists of exploring these kingdoms, and searching for Power Moons (think the starts in Mario 64, or the jiggies in Banjo Kazooie,) in order to power up the Odyssey ship and travel to the next kingdom. You get acquire said moons by exploring every nook and cranny in the kingdom, solving little puzzles, fighting bosses, doing menial tasks, participating in minigames, and more. Some of the power moons are scripted, particularly early on, but most of them are not. For a game with such an open-ended nature, there is tons of variety to the gameplay. You might be controlling a T-Rex one moment, riding a golden lion another moment, balancing on a giant corn-cob, or even riding a motorcycle through the streets of New Donk City. The variety is stunning, and keeps the gameplay from getting boring. The real gameplay hook for Odyssey is hook in this Mario adventure is the ability to use Mario’s hat to control, and possess different objects, creatures, and even some people. It may seem a little weird and creepy at first, but the execution is ingenious, in a way only Nintendo can pull off. You can literally take control of several Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros, Fire Balls, Tanks, Frogs, and even a T-rex. You can even take control of certain inanimate objects, and even some of the humans in New Donk City. This switches up the Gameplay almost infinitely, but in a way that always feels very organic, introducing so many unique and clever moments that never cease to be fun. Just goofing off and experimenting with this mechanic is half the fun in and of itself. The boss fights, many of which incorporate the possession mechanic, are all very fun and well designed. The end-game fight in particular is a high point among the impressive array of boss fights that the game has to offer. One of the most surprising boss fights you will encounter is a dragon that looks like it’s straight out of Game of Thrones. While a few of the bosses are challenging, many of the fights feel rather easy, and are a breeze to defeat. Some of this is due to the fact that there is no longer a “game over,” as you simply loose coins when you die. The boss fights are still tons of fun all around. Speaking of coins, you can use them to purchase different outfits, power stars, and other goodies. Some of these outfits have some actual gameplay use, but many of them feel like window dressing, though it helps spruce up your ship none-the-less. What is so incredible about this game is that after the credits you, you feel like you have only just begun. The replay value for this Mario game is absurdly high, and the possibilities open-up a ton after you finish the story, which should take you around fifteen hours in and of itself. The gameplay is also perfectly suited for being able to play in small doses if you have a job and a busy schedule (as I do,) but you can also play to your hearts content when you wish to on the weekends. The Gameplay really is about as close to perfect as you could hope for a 3-D Platformer to be! Verdict: Super Mario Odyssey is a celebration of more than thirty years of Super Mario. The game encapsulates what Mario has always been about: Pure fun. More than that, though, the game innovates and surprises long after you “beat” it. I certainly see myself playing this game for several more weeks to come. This game is the number one reason to purchase a Nintendo Switch if you have not done so already (They’re still hard to find.) This game truly is the best 3-D Platformer I have played in years, even giving Galaxy 2 a run for its money, and it is one of the very best games that our favorite Italian plumber has ever been in. So, go out, buy this game, and participate in an incredible, one-of-a-kind, globe-trotting “Odyssey.” Cons: Easy initial difficulty Occasional camera issues Sub-par plot Pros: Beautiful visuals and design Amazing music Great sound effects Tight and responsive controls Wonderful Sand-Box style Mario Gameplay Incredible and ingenious level design and scenarios Quirky and fun characters Tons of variety Unbelievably high replay-value One of the best Mario games ever made Overall: 10/10

This is fun to play... but 2 player is awful.... who wants to be a hat where all you can do is spin? Not to mention you have to use the controllers sideways instead of putting them in the hand held attachment and using another controller. I mean honestly they could've decided to add Luigi just for that purpose

Putting this out there right now; you are not going to see a game like this for a very long time. This is one of those rare games that release every 10 or so years. From the moment I first put my hands on the game at E3, I knew this was going to be something special. Simply moving around the brilliance that was New Donk City was incredibly fun. I had the widest grin on my face the whole 10 minutes I was playing the demo. Now that I've played the game for 50 hours with 100% completion, I can tell you that grin never left. Super Mario Odyssey is an absolute blast with amazing worlds to explore. There's secrets in every corner you turn, waiting to be found. There's secrets within secrets, and it's often completely up to you on how to find them. Odyssey takes note from nearly every single 3D Mario before it. You can see linear based platforming sections from 3D World, or bustling puzzles rooms and bosses reminiscent of Galaxy. There's tough assistant-less platforming challenges from Sunshine, with crazy trick jumps waiting for you to master. All of this manages to take place within many amazing open worlds, with a structure and pace that works brilliantly. Akin to Breath of the Wild, you can choose how much or how little you want to complete within this large (but disconnected in comparison) open world. I've done a playthrough of this game with several other people, and we all had our own way about going for everything we can. There are some flaws here and there, but they're small complaints in an otherwise amazing game. This is one of those games that people who don't even play games should try; there's a lot waiting to be tried for everyone.

    The Next Evolution of Mario

Mario's been around for over 30 years, and it's equal parts shocking and amazing to see how well he's doing. Super Mario Odyssey is a culmination of everything that makes Mario, and Nintendo, great. It's a game that anyone from 1 to 99 years old could enjoy, especially with the new Assist Mode that helps younger plays know where to go next, and it's also something new gamers and experienced games can enjoy alike. The gameplay is blissful perfection, with extremely unique levels that are fun to play around in and explore with tight controls. The kinds of moves you can pull off allow you to play the game in infinitely more ways than intended. This is all done with Mario's new trusty companion, Cappy. Cappy is essentially Mario's sentient hat. You can throw him in any direction to "cap"ture enemies, jump higher or farther, or break boxes and question blocks. There are also so many ways to play the game. Interested in motion controls? Try holding both JoyCons controllers separately. You can throw Cappy with a flick of the wrist. Want to play with a more traditional control style? Try putting both JoyCons on the included Grip, or buy the Pro Controller (my personal recommendation). Every control style includes HD Rumble, which makes the rumbles in-game feel very realistic in your hands, and Gyro aiming, which means you just have to move the controller around to aim (there's an option to turn this off if you'd like, I think Zelda and Splatoon do Gyro better). The story is also really good. You may think it's nothing more than Bowser kidnapping Peach, and technically you're right, but there are so many specific moments within the game that I'd highly recommend not spoiling for yourself. Graphically the game is stunning. Even though it only runs at 900p, the art style really works in its favor. I've played this game on a 55' 4K TV and it's one of the best things I've seen on there. You can actually see the individual hair's in Mario's mustache! If you own a Nintendo Switch, you owe it to yourself to get this game. It takes advantage of all the Switch hardware has to offer, it's extremely fun to play with all its unique levels and tight controls, and it has a pretty solid story for a Mario game. It lives up to all the hype surrounding it, and it's highly recommended.

    Solid platforming, fantastic level design

As a long-time fan of Nintendo games in general, and 3d Mario platformers specifically, I can say without hesitation that Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite so far. The controls and camera are exceptional. The motion controls provide a great supplement to the standard controls, and provide new abilities. I also never had to fight the camera, or take a "leap of faith". As for the level design, Odyssey turns to a more Super Mario 64 style of levels. The levels are large for a Mario title, and a have a mini-"Open World" aspect to them. Unlike Super Mario 64, there is no hub-world, so you travel between levels directly.. Each level has its own unique style, and is pure joy to explore. Behind virtually every corner are some coins, or a power moon, or some kind of Easter egg. Power Moons can be collected one after another, without losing your place, or being sent to the beginning of the level. Some are cleverly hidden, others unlocked by solving a puzzle, obtained by beating a boss, and half-a-dozen other different ways. You will likely find it a challenge to collect all of them. Hints are offered, but not foisted on you. Amiibo can help locate power moons, and the Odyssey amiibo offer particularly special benefits. No amiibo are required, however, to fully enjoy the game. It should be said that it is not a difficult game, nor is it intended to be. There is no level with punishing difficulty, and the boss fights are underpowered and even repetitive. Death's only penalty is a loss of a few coins. In my opinion, the ease of the boss fights do not ultimately take away from the supremely enjoyable experience of the rest of the game. However, some might be turned off by this lack of difficulty. If you are one who plays games for the innate challenge, I would recommend trying this out before buying, if possible. Challenge can be sought out, as a sort of aside from the main game. The controls and abilities of Mario in this title offer more than I've seen in previous titles, and virtually beg those with the skill to push them to the limits. Overall, I highly recommend this game to Switch owners. It is a fantastic platformer, with something in it for everyone. It hints and nods at nostalgia, but never relies on it. New gamers will be challenged to learn 3d platforming, but should find the learning curve to be a gentle slope, with rewards every step of the way. Experienced, and even expert gamers will find the level design to be varied, and a blast to explore. This is one title that will likely be in the libraries of almost every Switch owner.

I knew I needed to get Odyssey after Nintendo's E3 trailer of the game. Having played all prior Mario games (with the exception of Galaxy 2), it was a given that I would eventually play this. The controls had a small learning curve in learning how best to control Mario, especially with cap jumps, but once you get it down, this is one of the most fluid movements of Mario yet. Many of the worlds are expertly crafted, just big enough to enjoy exploring, but not overwhelmingly so. Like many Mario games, you're not playing for the gripping story, but for the tight gameplay. The story is just enough to help push the game along and enjoy the vibrancy of the worlds. It's the first Mario game in a while where I wanted to 100% the game on my first playthrough and I did just that. For someone looking to max out the game, there's certainly enough to do with 50-100 purple coins per world, 999 power moons, and the various outfits to collect. This should be a staple game for any Switch owner that's a fan of classic platforming Mario.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of those rare games that is so good, it will be remembered for generations. Controls are tight and fluid, graphics look great, and the story is charming, funny, and varied. There is also a TON of content. Without spoiling anything, even when you finish the main story part of the game, there is so much more to do and the game gives you very appealing incentives to keep playing. I was never the biggest Mario fan but after playing this, I really can't recommend Super Mario Odyssey enough. This is a must-have for the Nintendo Switch.

What can I say? It's the Mario platform adventure title for the best selling Nintendo of all time. Graphics are amazing, the game control is great, the design of the levels are awesome and it's super fun as Mario takes on the likeness of all kinds of different characters. You can pretty much separate this game into two different categories of difficulty. As you play through the game and chase Bowser across the globe the gameplay is pretty simple and relaxing. As a 30+ year old dude, don't judge me I'm a life long Mario fan, the main challenges were easy to accomplish and it was easy to progress to the next worlds. I was able to play along side with both my 9 year old and 13 year in 2 player mode, they are both typically terrible at video games so it was nice to be able to sit down and have a positive experience with them as they played the beginning levels. After defeating Bowser the challenges became more difficult and sometimes precise controls are required. While this is more frustrating it is also challenging so if you are looking for a fun relaxing title to enjoy or need the challenge of finding every last moon piece. There's also plenty of fun side challenges along the way. This is a must play for any Mario fan or frankly anyone who owns a Switch.

For me, this game is up there with Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Galaxy. The controls are sharp and intuitive and there's tons of content in the game. The only potential downside is that it's not a very challenging game. I wouldn't have minded having some more difficult portions for late game moon collecting but the game is so fun as it is, and it's not overly easy, that I don't mind moving to another game if I want a real challenge.
