I have been an iPad user mainly for travel entertainment and casual browsing. Upon any trips longer than a day or two, I would have to bring my laptop for actual work-- nothing crazy-- excel, mail, and browser work-- yet the iPad couldn't work.
Enter Surface Pro X. I was always wanting to try the Surface line, but every time I tried one out, I would be turned off by sluggish performance and poor battery life. After using this for a week now, I am SOLD. I've been powering away on spreadsheets at Starbucks this morning without having to have both devices with me. Tablet mode works great for browsing and media consumption. Once you get used to Windows 10 coming iOS, its pretty startling how much more capable it is! A couple apps couldn't load due to the ARM processor, but I just use the web based version with the new Edge (which is blazing fast!). Having an always connected computer/tablet with LTE a a full operating system with a sexy design rivaling Apple has me very excited.

When I first read about the Surface Pro X on Microsoft's website I didn't fully realize what the differences between ARM processors and i3, i5, and i7 processors. I still went ahead and purchased it and started using it. At first, when I read that you can't just install anything on it I was worried about my decision. "Did I just purchase a souped-up Surface RT?"
However the more I used it the more I was confident with my decision. To start, the display on the Surface Pro X is simply gorgeous. The colors are rich and vibrant and it just looks great I love the very thin bezels on the right and left side of the screen!
If you are looking for a tablet/PC to do high-end video editing or late-night gaming sessions then this is not your choice. With the ARM processor you can only run 32 bit programs in emulation mode. However, for watching media, document processing, or other simpler tasks you will not be disappointed. This device is also LTE compatible which I love. I'm an AT&T subscriber and all I have to do is pay a monthly $10 connection fee and I can share my data plan with it. This device also has a solid build and feels very sturdy in your hands.
What I don't like is that this device is a fingerprint magnet! I am constantly wiping it down and cleaning the back. Some may not be so picky but fingerprints drive me nuts.
The unit also has the ability to increase the SSD space by purchasing a larger drive. A friend of mine took his 128GB Surface Pro X and upgraded it to 512GB. He said this gives him much more piece of mind in not running out of memory. It also saved him money.
Overall, I highly recommend this device to the right person. I am 30 days in on using it and have no regrets buying it.

I absolutely LOVE my surface Pro X!! I was looking for a laptop that is fast and easy to use and the Surface Pro X is both! It gives you the feel of a desktop computer with the mobility of a laptop. I love that you can detach the computer and use it a tablet. Also, I love the feel of the keyboard. It just like a regular keyboard. The first keyboard I bought was defective. (some of the keys didn't work). I brought it to best buy and they were very helpful. I was able to return it and get a new one. Now I have no problems! If you are looking for a computer that allows mobility, speed and ease this is the laptop for you! I would absolutely recommend the Surface Pro!!
The only thing I will warn you about is that there's no headphone jack or USB port. Although, I have has no problem with that since it has Bluetooth. But for some people this may be a problem.

I absolutely love this tablet pro, I originally bought it for work, but now use it for playing games on and more. My work saw me using this and liked it so much, that they are now buying a few for their company for employees to use in the field. Thankfully, I have my own, so I get to use it outside of work. Lol For performance, it has given me no issues what do ever and the battery run-time is impressive. I was debating on getting a cheaper similar device, but glad I went with this purchase. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a replacement for a table or for business use "on-the-go".

I purchased this tablet, along with the type cover (without the pen storage) yesterday.
First, the tablet is VERY nice, it has good memory, it's responsive.
But here's the problem: It ONLY uses ARM apps. That is, you CANNOT use all your Windows 10 apps on this device because Windows came up with a processor, just for this tablet, that is not compatible with most apps in the market.
Windows, I don't care about extending a couple more hours of battery power with this proprietary processor.
That's just not good enough.
I couldn't find a compatible version of Sketchpad (a leading app for this hobby). Nor could I find an out-of-the-box version of Lightroom (which I use every day) without going down several rabbit holes. Mail would not set up on this device, despite entering everything correctly.
At the end of the day, I realized that ARM isn't for me.
I don't spend $1,200 on a tablet with a keyboard just to surf the web. I need it for personal finance, light entertainment, photo editing, sketching, and with the expectation that ANY app I use on my Windows 10 desktop computer WILL work on this tablet.
Otherwise, you should just get a budget tablet.
Today, I'm promptly returning the type cover and the tablet to Best Buy and plan to purchase a Surface Pro 7, which is NOT ARM compatible, thank God, and CAN run all my apps, thank God.
Windows, honestly. Your most beautiful, most expensive, updated device doesn't even run all your programs.
What were you thinking?
By the way, I just uploaded this same review to my 700 Twitter followers and shared it on Facebook to spread the word that the Surface Pro X should be avoided at all costs.
It wasn't a Microsoft-bashing post. It was simply to inform friends that purchasing this product would be a waste of their money, and that they would be greatly disappointed in the product's performance.
Anyway, the upside is I get to save a couple of hundred dollars.
And I anticipate enjoying the Surface Pro 7.
(And if that's true, don't worry, Microsoft, I'll be glad to share the good news about THAT product with those same social followers.)
Good luck everyone, and if you purchased Pro X, hope you can take it back! Best Buy Elite members (like me) get much more time to return.
Cheers!!!

Surface Pro X | A Versatile and Sleek Powerhouse
|

Posted . Owned for 8 months when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The Surface Pro X by Microsoft is a sleek and versatile 2-in-1 device that aims to deliver a premium computing experience. With its 13" touch screen, Microsoft SQ1 processor, and 8GB of memory, it offers a unique blend of portability and power. In this review, we'll explore its design, performance, display quality, and overall usability.
Design and Build (5/5):
The Surface Pro X continues Microsoft's tradition of elegant design. It's incredibly thin and lightweight, making it perfect for on-the-go use. The build quality is exceptional, with a premium feel that combines a metal chassis and a vibrant PixelSense display. The device is well-balanced, and the adjustable kickstand allows for comfortable typing, drawing, or viewing angles.
Display Quality (5/5):
The 13" touch screen of the Surface Pro X is a standout feature. It boasts excellent color accuracy, sharpness, and a high-resolution display that is a joy to work on. The PixelSense technology ensures vibrant colors and wide viewing angles, making it ideal for creative tasks like graphic design, photo editing, and multimedia consumption.
Performance (3/5):
The Microsoft SQ1 processor, which is a custom ARM-based chip, delivers solid performance for everyday tasks and light productivity work. Web browsing, document editing, and media streaming are handled smoothly. However, it may struggle with more demanding applications or multitasking scenarios compared to traditional x86 processors. While the battery life is impressive due to the ARM architecture's power efficiency, some software compatibility issues may arise with certain older or less optimized applications.
Battery Life (4/5):
One of the notable advantages of the Surface Pro X is its exceptional battery life. The ARM-based processor is power-efficient, allowing for all-day use on a single charge, which is a significant plus for users constantly on the move. However, battery life may vary depending on usage patterns and applications running in the background.
Connectivity and Ports (3/5):
The Surface Pro X features a limited selection of ports, with two USB-C ports and a Surface Connect port. While USB-C is versatile, the absence of a traditional USB-A port and an SD card slot might require some users to use adapters or hubs, adding to the overall cost and inconvenience.
Software Compatibility (3/5):
One of the biggest considerations with the Surface Pro X is its software compatibility. It runs on Windows 11 on ARM, which means it may not support all legacy Windows applications designed for x86 architecture. While Microsoft has made strides in optimizing popular apps, some users may encounter compatibility issues with niche or specialized software.
Stylus and Pen Support (5/5):
For digital artists and note-takers, the Surface Pro X offers excellent stylus support. The Surface Pen (sold separately) is responsive and accurate, making it a fantastic tool for creative work and taking handwritten notes.
In conclusion, the Surface Pro X is a stylish and ultraportable 2-in-1 device that excels in design, display quality, and battery life. It's a great choice for professionals and creatives who prioritize portability and versatility. However, its performance and software compatibility may not meet the needs of power users or those heavily reliant on legacy applications. If you're looking for a premium and travel-friendly computing experience and can adapt to the ARM-based ecosystem, the Surface Pro X is a compelling option.

I got it at 500 bucks which is worth it, no way is this junk worth a grand. The led is low grade garbage compared to a oled or iPad Pro 10000 mini leds. It is one of the slowest of the slow, windows arm processors are dumpsters speed compared to my M1 iPad Pro. I only wanted it because of the lte and the 2 games I play it doesn’t matter what speed computer you have.
This thing it’s a specific use if you want to play low end video games on the go, and you don’t have a unlimited hot spot. Anything else there is something way better for you. The iPad Pro 12.9 has a billion times better screen and 20 times faster.
I’d change my review if it was actually 500 to start. Them selling this at a grand is a joke. The newer one for 1659 is just pure insanity any one buying that has no idea what they are doing.
I’ll give you a comparison to my iPad Pro in the pictures so u can see, that is running shadow pc so you don’t think it isn’t a iPad since it has windows desktop as the picture. Also the pro is 120 hz vs the 60 hz this garbage surface is. Microsoft really should be embarrassed. At no point ever was this thing worth a grand. The pro still has some back light bleed compared to a crisp oled, but the pro is faster than any android or intel. It is also way brighter, and the pro is 900.

I'm going to focus on the negatives first, but if you get what you want, I think they all can be overlooked. You just need to know the limitations and see if you're okay with it.
The processor is NOT what you'd normally find in a desktop and laptop. A few months back, I was purchasing these for my workplace and noticed they had a "Microsoft SQ1 processor". I immediately went what the heck and put it back on the shelf.
Microsoft ABSOLUTELY needs to disclose the fact that this processor runs differently. It breaks compatibility with a majority of programs that can run on a normal desktop or laptop. Whether they didn't disclose this on purpose or by accident is unforgivable. I suspect a lot of people buy this because it looks sleek, and expect it to run like a Surface Pro series with a number. Only to find out that it can't really run anything at all other than the built in browser and Office. It has a built in emulator that you can run older Windows programs on, but it doesn't work well and kills the battery life.
I only caught it without researching it initially because I'm too nerdy for my own good.
So why did I get it then for personal use? My curiosity piqued when these were on sale, so I thought I'd give it a try. I love my iPad Pro, but iOS fails horribly when it comes to productivity. It's touch oriented, which has its pros and cons. It's pretty much a device you use in bed or on the sofa, just looking at the web.
This tablet is in a completely different class. I would put it somewhere between a tablet and a laptop. Better than a Chromebook, less than an actual laptop.
Being a different processor, again it breaks compatibility with a lot of traditional Windows programs. Even programs that have been converted to run on this sometimes don't run well. Firefox, for example, stutters a lot. It also eats gobs and gobs of memory. The new Microsoft Edge however runs as you'd expect a browser to run.
Now that that's out of the way, time for the good...
This tablet does everything I want it to. I can use it as a tablet, but Microsoft needs to refine it a little bit. It's sleek and the battery life is really good. It's very portable. It has a built in LTE modem. So that means I can take this with me and not bring my separate hotspot, which is one more thing to keep track of. And I don't want to use my phone as a hotspot, which kills battery life.
This has a qualcomm modem, which is the best on market. I've been getting very good speeds.
You can actually sign up for a few services on the tablet itself, like you can with a cellular iPad. It did not work completely well for me, due to the carrier. I signed up for the plan on their website, and it automatically activated on the tablet. That was very sleek.
The drive is also upgradable. There's no reason to spend a ton more money just to get more drive space. It's located where the SIM card slot is located- in the back.
I don't have the type cover and stylus. Maybe at some point I will get it. But I can use my iPad Pro if I need to draw something. I hate the feeling of the keys on the surface cover, and it feels weird to feel the keys if you have it folded back. I do have wireless keyboards at home, so I can use them.
It does everything I want it to, and knowing its weaknesses I don't think it's fair to knock down any stars. This laptop will be very good for quite some time. When Adobe converts Photoshop onto this, I expect it to become very useful.
1 star gets knocked because they don't disclose that it has limitations on what it can run. I don't really know where it stands on the value spectrum. If you don't care about cellular but want productivity, you're better off getting a 2 in 1 laptop. A cellular iPad Pro that has double the space is $50 more. If you want a tablet but don't care about cellular access, then the iPad Pro is significantly cheaper. The value depends on what you want and what you need. I feel like it's slightly on the not so good value side.
I recommend this to anyone who needs a good productivity computer and it's a GREAT iPad Pro alternative. Just understand that you can't expect this to behave like what you will normally find in Windows computers. Stick to Microsoft's software for now because they perform better.

There are more scratches on the screen than 2 phones and 2 laptops I've had for years. The edges are covered in scratches like someone rubbed them across concrete, and several all over the center. The Perfect Mobile Work Device for the Right User

This is the perfect mobile work device IF you don't do creative / graphics work, as most industry standard creative applications still do not yet run natively on ARM chips like the SQ1 chip that powers the Surface Pro X, and some still won't run at all. That being said, if you're a typical business user, remote worker, or student, this will run pretty much any productivity application an x86 (e.g. Intel/AMD computers) machine can run, while still giving you all of the benefits that ARM chips bring (great battery life, completely silent/fanless design, and LTE connectivity).
My workflow includes Microsoft Office, Google apps, Slack, Zoom, and a few different cloud applications that I only need a browser to run - Microsoft's Edge browser works great for these apps, as well as for the Google apps I use.
With its fantastic screen and ability to convert into a tablet with kickstand, the Surface Pro X is also a great entertainment machine, though I definitely wouldn't recommend it for gaming unless you're into cloud gaming (Google Stadia or Microsoft xCloud, etc.), in which case it's a great device for that.
Aesthetically, the device is gorgeous - thin and light, and a total delight to handle and use.
Lastly, considering how rare it is to see full-featured laptops with LTE connectivity, I would say that's the one feature that really sets this device apart and why I called it the perfect mobile work device. Being able to connect to the internet from virtually anywhere, and also not having to rely on random Wifi connections at cafes and hotels that may not be reliable, fast enough, or secure enough, is a game changer.

Look, this is an incredible machine, concept, and potentially the future of 2 in 1 devices, but it isn't ready for primetime and certainly not at a premium. I really enjoyed using the X for a short while, but nothing in my mind could convince me that keeping it would be a wise choice. The device was fast, screen is quite beautiful, the exterior design sharp and thin and definitely pretty to look at.
The problem with the Surface X Pro is its lack of a 64 bit emulator for windows 10 apps. A lot of apps worked fine using 32bit emulation, and they were fast enough that I didn't notice a huge difference performance wise compared to my windows machines. However, try using this machine for something other than web browsing, streaming, or simple word processing and the flaws become glaringly obvious.
I'll give you a simple example, my kid wanted to play Minecraft with me and I decided to go ahead and pay 30 bucks to play the game on this device, at some point in time (at launch) it worked. Now, you are greeted with a message from Mojang stating that the device is no longer supported and is being phased out. It essentially stated that sometime in October, all online play would cease to exist, but you could still play it single player. Keep in mind, I wasn't about to wait and find out if Microsoft would make the device compatible, if this was a simple oversight at Mojang, or what have you.
That simple problem raised my eyebrows, and as I perused the app store and installed apps, I found out this was going to be a bigger problem than is being advertised. Microsoft is too massive a corporation to be releasing products prematurely like this and letting consumers eat the losses, yet here we are. I decided to return the device and I traded it for a less pretty Surface Pro 7.
Voila, compatibility problems are no longer my problem, and the machine runs most everything ai throw at it. I did not try Photoshop or other cpu intensive apps, but I'm sure with the i7 and 16gb ram, it will handle itself just fine compared to the surface x pro I returned.
I'm not going to lie, this experience was a bit heartbreaking, because I really wanted to love the X and tried to give myself every excuse in the book to keep it. Maybe when the next Surface X version is released they will have solved the emulation issue, but until that happens.. I wouldn't bother. These devices are too expensive for you to serve as a beta tester for Microsoft. Just don't waste your time, hold off until the next Surface devices are released.
TLDR, you're paying a huge premium for a giant phone that can run windows 10 via 32bit emulation. If that sounds appealing to you, then by all means.. Have at it. Just remember, we are talking windows store, not Apple App Store or Android Play Store. You've been warned.

No, it does not run the X64 apps well, although the new emulator in the Windows Insider program is pretty darned good. I'm trying to install Adobe Creative Cloud apps such as Premiere Pro and Premiere Rush with it, but it painful to get proper support from Adobe and so far no success installing any of them. Chrome installed nicely with the emulator though.
Having acknowledged this, for me this is a perfect machine and I'm so very happy with it. It runs all of the Windows Office Apps like a breeze, and Edge is just super snappy with it. It's so quiet - no fan! LTE is great, I'm using T-Mobile for only an extra $20 per month for unlimited 4G data and it's super quick. Battery life is great. It looks so cool, screen is bright and color accurate. Lightweight. The new signature keyboard with the rechargeable new flat pen? Super.
I don't game, but am on the web a lot. I've tried using Chromebooks, really had a love/hate relationship going with Samsung's Galaxy Chromebook, but it was always inadequate and the battery life really was a killer.
3:2 display is a killer quality, for a 13" display it's as tall as a 15.6" 18:9 display, so for productivity apps it's perfect. Outdoor use? no issue.
Flip it around and stand the tablet on the upside down keyboard base? Oh yeah. It's the perfect "lying in bed with the screen in front of me" media consumption machine at night. Speakers? More than good enough, loud enough. WiFi? Perfect, never drops a signal. Bluetooth? Perfect, external mouse works great with no hesitations. Like it's wired.
Any low ratings seem to be about expectations that we cannot really have with this machine. It's not as fast as M1, not even close - but for what most of us do on a computer - except gaming - you would never notice. It's positively snappy in performance. And the package is perfect... just so cool.
I'm very happy with this, and I recommend it highly.

A unique surface device unlike the others. I say this because this laptop has a cell phone processor in it and you need to understand that some apps may not run on this device if you understand that at least to me this is the type of surface I’ve been waiting for since the first surface pro it is thinner than a pencil and has upgradable storage. The storage is hard to come by but I have been able to upgrade it. Once the storage is upgraded I also found that the device runs a little quicker I do put caution towards investing your money in this device because you could get a surface pro six or seven from much less with more processing capabilities but if you’re looking for a device to take notes and write papers with the mobility andAnd LTE modem built into it this is a stable computer and you’re able to run the Microsoft suit as well as Google suit apps with no problems

So, I typically review products I'm interested in and I follow several reviews, whose opinions I value. So, I knew what I was getting I'l into when buying this, I was cautious. I own the Surface Book 2, Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Laptop 2. I wanted something with LTE, because I just dont like to tether, also, this thing is super slim and sexy and I just wanted it. It was ARM and lack of apps that held me back for months on getting this device. After thinking through how I would use it and its purpose, I'm asking myself why I waited so long. This is is snappy, responsive light and works better than I expected. Look this isn't for the artist or power user, but, it is for the mobile user who just wants have access on the go. Dont ger me wrong, it can handle more than I thought, but it review a product expecting a Pro 7 or book 2 is just bias. This is an on the go, super sexy device that allows mobile warriors to get things done. I recommend this device for mobile movers like me.
