This movie was obviously "Hollywoodized" making multiple personality disorder or, as it's called now, dissociative identity disorder look more extreme then it really is. Not a kid friendly movie, but great overall. This movie was remade in 2007 which is a lot different than this 1976 classic. I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time. Best Buy never let's me down with their selections and prices. They're my go to store for anything electronic. Sally Field played the role of Sybil very well. I would definitely recommend this movie, as long as people understand that not everyone with DID, formerly MPD is as extreme as shown in this movie.

    A "Story" of Multiple Dissociation

This is a fine and enduring film, with Sally Field exuding a stellar performance as Sybil, a woman who copes with past trauma and ongoing adjustive demands by the defense of dissociation. The viewer is not only provided an opportunity to gain insight into the dynamics of dissociation but to "feel the residual effects," once removed, by watching. I showed this film in a graduate-level abnormal psychology class that I teach, with many students emotionally-impacted, ultimately increasing their empathic understanding of patients who cope by dissociation.

Heartbreaking tale of mental illness based on the book. Uncut over three hour TV movie that doesn't seem too long to watch due to its engaging story. Sally Fields received an Emmy for her starring role as a woman with multiple personality disorder.
