I was inspired to revisit this great movie by a recent NCIS episode but couldn't find a Blu-ray or 4K version, so I settled for the DVD edition. The picture quality was OK, but this is a case where it's really about the story which wasn't diminished by lack of 4K.

As a mother of an Iraq veteran, this movie was brilliantly produced and was touching. Makes up appreciate all that our soldiers have done for our freedom.

Great movie if you really want to find out just how much respect is given to a fallen soldier. Very patriotic. Better have a box of Kleenex handy.

VERY INTERSTING. DID NOT KNOW THE DETAILS OF HOW A FALLEN SOLDIER IS PREPARED AND THEN ESCORTED BACK TO THEIR FAMALIY FOR BURIAL. KEVIN BACON WAS OUTSTANDING AS USUAL.

I have watched this movie a few times, and each time I am amazed at how well done it is. I have been involved in a number of funerals for military members, and it is amazing the support that this country shows for my fallen comrades, and that is exactly what this movie shows - whether it be the respect the military shows in how they treat the fallen, or how the general citizenry react.
I have read reviews talking about how it should have talked about how the war is wrong, or about the war is justified, but would take away from the power of the movie. In fact there were a couple of times where I though it was going to do just that (once I thought was going to be against the war, once for the war) and I found myself saying "Please no!" Either one of these would have lessened the impact of the movie, because whether the war is right or wrong, the country and the military show the respect to the fallen and that is how it should be.
Also most everything that Is in the movie showing how people show their respect, I have seen in real life. I have seen the Airport workers stop what they are doing and come around to show their respect, I have had people come up and thank me for being on funeral detail, I have seen towns coming together for the funeral of a fallen soldier... This a great country that has realized that it needs to honor our heros, and is doing it, and that ultimately is what this movie portrays.

So Simple, and So Moving

This is an incredibly powerful story, all the more so because it is true. It is very simple, really. A solider dies in Iraq, and the film details the process of accompanying his remains back to his home so he can be buried.
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl, USMC, portrayed in the film by Kevin Bacon, volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps because he has noticed that they are from the same hometown. The real Strobl, who appears in the DVD extras, wrote the original short story and co-wrote the screenplay. He wrote the story to reflect upon the amazing outpouring of respect and emotion that he experienced from a variety of Americans as he made the journey.
The sequences early on that show the process of preparing the body to be shipped back to the US, and the preparation of the body for burial are fascinating. There is nothing ghoulish about them, as the complete body is not shown.
As he has never escorted remains, Lieutenant Colonel Strobl must be educated in the proper method of executing his duties, which is also fascinating.
The film packs its emotional wallop in the encounters that Strobl has with everyday Americans on the journey to Phelp's burial. Particularly memorable is a meeting on board a plane with a stewardess, and a scene where all the grounds crew at an airport join Strobl in honoring the body.
The end credits reveal the real Chance Phelps as a boy and young man. More footage of Chance Phelps is included in the DVD extras, which are very worthwhile viewing.

I served a year ago in Iraq, where I worked loading air craft’s with supply and troops. Working graves where it was dark and silent, we occasionally had to do ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. There is no greater honor than standing out in the middle of the tar-mac and feeling a since of sadness but pride of what we do, it’s hard to describe how one really feel to be part of something so honorible. I saw this movie a week after I return from Iraq. I cried through the whole movie. To see this movie and know I was part of something with great honored cannot be descried. I think this movie cannot honor our fallen brothers and sister enough. This movie put a lot of perspective in to what we as service members are doing there.
