Beautifully animated film from the Studio Ghibli library. Not as good as some of the other films in their catalog, but for sure worth a buy, especially at such a great price!

Great Animation, So-so Story

This film features lush and beautiful animation like most movies from Studio Ghibli. But its story — featuring characters and events from Ursula LeGuin's "EarthSea" novels — feels rushed and disjointed. I have not read the books, so I was coming into this story cold, and the movie failed to make me really care about the principle characters. So by about halfway through I really just was watching the film more for the beauty of the animation than anything else. So it's 5 stars for the animation, 3 stars for the story, overall 4 stars. Maybe a better film to rent than to buy, but if you are an EarthSea fan or a Studio Ghibli nut, maybe you'll love it more than I did.

This was helmed by the great Miyazaki's son. I guess the author of the book this movie is based on felt the movie strayed quite far from the actual book. I can understand that. It's easy to feel lost in the story. It almost seems overly complex, as if the amount of time in the movie was not enough to really explain everything that was going on (even though a moderate portion of the movie felt quite slow.) Viewers can make educated guesses as to the overall plot once the movie is complete, but may find themselves scratching their heads throughout the majority of the movie. The animation is quite beautiful, what you would expect from a Ghibli film. I would recommend it only to true Ghibli fans, but would otherwise recommend other Ghibli films before this one to people who are unfamiliar with the studio. All that said, I am not disappointed with the movie, and I still enjoyed it.

Tales from Earthsea was a very enjoyable movie, especially if you're a fan of Studio Ghibli. The visuals are fantastic, the music is great and the story is good. It's not a blow you away story and it starts slow enough, but the third act is very well done. I have not read any of the Earthsea novels so I can't compare, but I didn't feel like I was lost at any point.

This is what I expect from Studio Ghibli it had a good story, it was well drawn & the voice work was excellent. If you have never read Ursula Le Guin's novels you would see that it is not followed and deviates from it. It can stand on it's own merits if you haven't read the book and is thoroughly enjoyable.

I have never read the books so I can't say much. I enjoyed the movie a lot and the colors in the film were spectacular. The first time around watching it, some people get lost or don't like it; I liked it, and second time around, I liked it more. The details are outstanding and remind me of Howl's Moving Castle.

This one definitely has a different feel to it, much darker, and creepier. Willem Defoe’s voice will keep you up at night. However, this could have easily been expanded into a couple of movies, because there is no back story to any character.

Adding to my Anime collection, and being a fan of Ursula K. Le Guin, I saw this during a recent trip and decided to give it a go. I was not disappointed. It wasn't faithful to the books, but then again, it was an interesting take.

Let's face it. This film starts strong but slows down before picking up again. It's not great but it's not bad either. The score is magnificent, the theme song heart grabbing. If you can forego a weak plot and character development, this honest debut of a film is something to enjoy on a pass time.

After reading the book, we decided to give the movie a shot after having randomly seen it in the store one day. We didn't know they had done anything with a movie, but if it's Disney related it's got to be good.

This movie was directed Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro. Who Hayao did not believe to have the skills to direct a movie. He was right but his later movie was very entertaining.

These movies are great. This one has alot of heart and that goes a long way. A few changes from the book but the theme was intact. The studio really brought its A game. We love these movies. Worth the purchase for the collection

I am a fan of the Studio Ghibli films but this one was just a little weird. Nothing at all like the books and certainly not enough dragons.
