Great high-end gaming monitor and much more

Being the owner of a high-end TCL QD-Mini LED TV, I had no clue TCL was involved in the gaming monitor market until I stumbled on a TCL 32” R84 series monitor. Its features and performance surely make it a high-end gaming monitor capable of much more.
Unboxing it and putting it together literally took less than 5 minutes. This monitor offers plenty of connection ports; a powered 90-watt USB-C port, two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DP 1.4 port, two USB-A ports and one upstream KVM support. I connected through the DP port.
I started with games. At 32 inches, it is neither too big nor too small, and easily fits on most desks. Bright rooms are no longer scary with the non-reflective matte finish. I played everything from old school to classic favorites like God of War, to modern cinematic games like Cyberpunk 2077. With a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz at 4K resolution, the fast HVA panel provided stunning picture quality. The best feature of the R84 is its QD-Mini LED backlight with its 1,400 dimming zones when combined with the HVA panel, providing very deep blacks that rival my high-end OLED monitor. The colors are vibrant and rich, almost popping out of the screen. At a maximum of 1,500 nits peak brightness, HDR 1400 VESA Certified, very few monitors can rival the R84 for extreme brightness and high contrast. The details and realism of the pictures and graphics are truly impressive. It’s not only for games, I caught myself watching entire 4K movies and completely absorbed by those gorgeous bright colors and inky blacks. The stereo speakers sound decent and there’s a headphone output for better sound and privacy. I did some graphic design for work and they looked stunning on that screen. I used it for my email and preparing some Excel documents and it performs very well with good text clarity. I tinkered with the settings from a small jog controller at the center, underneath the screen. There are many options to customize the picture, but they’re intuitive and the user interface is easy to navigate and set-up.
The TCL 32” R84 Series monitor is a great performer in all aspects of gaming. The vast majority of gamers, even the demanding ones, won't be disappointed with its top performance. Nothing comes brighter and with its QD-Mini LED backlight, it performs as well as a TV. In the high-end gaming monitor market, TCL has a strong contender with this 32-inch R84 Series. Among the best I’ve owned so far.

The TCL 32 R84 is close to being the perfect monitor, no matter if you’re a gamer, casual browser, using it for the office or editing photos and videos.
The screen is STUNNING, colors are vivid and the blacks are as close OLED levels of darkness, this is mainly because of the HVA panel. The screen gets to 1400+ nits so you can use it anywhere and its 165 refresh rate is excellent for gaming and buttery smooth even when you’re just scrolling webpages, once you go past 60 htz you will not want to go back.
TCL calibrates the monitor before sending it to you and provides the calibration results, which is wonderful for those that are using the monitor as a professional. My screen was set to a warmer hue when I got but its easy to adjust it to your preferred style. The monitor has a bunch of presets (Adobe, SRGB, DCI-P3, Rec. 709) that you can change easily and TCL also gives 8 scenario modes (movie, games, eye saver etc). I loved the fact that TCL uses DDC/CI to allow your monitors brightness and speakers to be changed by your operating system instead of having to go through the monitor button which always take way longer.
When it comes to gaming this monitor is great, the refresh rate and low input lag was excellent. The added gaming features such as different types of cross hairs is wonderful and the RGB in the back is tastefully done. The monitor also has FreeSync Premium so you wont get stuttering in games and tear free game play.
I was even more impressed with the screen when it came to office task, I can’t explain to you how great and sharp the text look on screen. Once you use this monitor for office tasks you will never want to go back.
The ports on the monitor are not the newest but they are more than enough for 99.9% of people. You get HDMI 2.1 , DP 1.4, USB C with charging and display out with a built in KVM. Having all of this included is wonderful and you basically get everything you need.
Now with all of this being said I did run into a few issues, one of them being the USB A ports for KVM use. The issue is the USB-A port don’t wake devices. So if your laptop or computer is asleep you can’t wake it unless you turn the monitor on and off, this basically makes the KVM unless. I tried everything to make it work, reset the monitor settings and even enabled quick start but nothing fixed this. At first I thought the USB A ports weren’t working, however my keyboard and mouse worked so it has to be a hardware/software issue. The second thing that was sub-par for the monitor was the speakers, they are very low and don’t have much depth to them. You will need to add speakers and thankfully there is a 3.5 jack for you to do this. The last grip I had with the monitor was uniformity; at off angles you will see the color shift a bit. Now looking straight on there is no issue but with the grey tones you will see a change in color when off center.
Overall the monitor is great, it has one BEST all-around screens I have used. All the colors and scaling work great across Windows/Mac/ Windows ARM, if you have a Mac you know this is big. I don’t really mind having subpar speakers or the little bit of uniformity issues, but the USB A ports not being able to wake a sleeping device is the only thing that stops this monitor from being the best 32 inch all around monitor out there.
Good: Bad:
Stunning Display USB-A ports can’t wake devices
Easy Setup Speakers
Everything is included (cables) Uniformity at off angles
Monitor Arm moves in every direction
KVM switch
HDR
Eye searing brightness

TCL monitor is great...
Setup was super simple. Plug and play.... No issues with Windows 11.
There are A LOT of connection options.
1 HDMI x2
DPort
USB c
USB A
USB upstream special connection
Headphones
So no complaints with that. Actually big plus for me.
Appearance is really nice. Clean white back with Cool LEDs to light up your area. Black front.
2 options to mount your screen. 1. Use the base that it comes with. The base allows for up, down, twist left and right, and twist clockwise and counter clockwise. Only thing it does not do is allow for long view of paper like legal size viewing of screen. But this is not a work screen. It would be nice if it did rotate fully 90 degrees though.
2nd option is to mount to a arm.
Performance with high 4k game play is great.... Really close to other LED type of displays. Zero lag/latency. Colors are bright. No issues with obscure viewing. In other words if you have spectators to your side they can see your screen.
Great monitor for game play. Nicer with connections and appearance. Solid buy.

BRIGHT and fast, no burn-in risk

VERY bright Fast-HVA panel with minimal in-game smearing. Looks remarkably close to my AW3225QF in some HDR demos although FALD will never compete with OLED in local dimming performance. The brightness in games that are mostly outside during the day or with lots of snow (Warzone, etc) makes the QD-OLED's weakness glaringly obvious and this monitor really shine.
Great for work since no burn-in risk and can handle any game with its 165Hz refresh and 10bit color. SDR looks as incredible as I've seen it for non-HDR mode, as well.
VRR flicker is present, as with many monitors these days regardless of vendor or model, and off-angle color/gamma shift is inherent to VA-type panels. Do not expect OLED level of off-axis performance, although this does not bother me personally as much since I can properly position the panel to mitigate it whether sitting or standing at my desk.
The anti-blooming algorithm of the backlight makes the mouse cursor almost disappear against a black background which is easily solved in two ways:
1. Use a wallpaper
2. Disable / lower the Local Dimming strength for desktop use
I have mine mounted to an Ergotron arm and so cannot speak to the stand but it seemed sturdy in the box.
I am overall very pleased with the performance of this monitor, especially for the price. This is replacing a dead ASUS PG27UQ and it is definitely an upgrade! The USB-C KVM is great when switching between desktop and laptop and the power delivery is the icing on the cake.
I do still prefer the 240Hz OLED for competitive multiplayer since the instant pixel response and lower overall latency of the higher refresh rate (provided your system can maintain very high fps), but am enjoying everything else on this monitor.
TL;DR - I would easily recommend this to anyone in need of a bright monitor with tons of color performance in SDR and HDR for gaming and/or work.
*For TCL, maybe a slight curve like the AW3225QF would help keep the edges / corners from color shifting as some people have noticed.

Monitor is easy to set up. The monitor snaps into the stand
Easy to navigate OSD.
Great monitor for $$$. I'm split between casual gaming, productivity, and watching movies/tv.
Monitor stand is pretty solid.
Neutral
Speakers are meh (not a big deal if you have your own audio setup) and you have to go into the OSD to adjust volume.
Negative.
Power brick is big.

I've always come down on the side of OLED in the display tech debate between MiniLED and OLED displays, but the TCL 32R84 is the first MiniLED monitor that I've even seen in person, much less used on a daily basis. It's also the first TCL product I've used, and I've come away impressed with the brand and this display in particular.
#Unboxing and first impressions#
Pretty standard packaging for the 32R84, though I'll note that it was mostly styrofoam rather than cardboard in terms of recyclability. I keep all my monitor boxes for easy packing for transport so that isn't as big a deal to me as with some other products.
The monitor has a black front and white rear shell. The rear has RGB light strips which default to a color wave pattern and can be set within the menus for the monitor to different patterns or static colors. The stand is height adjustable and allows rotation to portrait mode should you need to use that with this 32" beast.
I love the number of inputs and features that the R84 supports - you get 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs (that support up to 144hz), USB-C (that supports at least 4k/120hz - this may have been a limitation for my laptop) and a DisplayPort input at 165hz. There's also KVM functionality, though I already have a more convenient KVM setup at my desk so I won't be using the capability on the 32R84 itself. Finally, it supports 90W USB-C PD charging even when the display is off. That's just plain cool.
#Using the 32R84#
This monitor is capable of truly shocking brightness. When calibrating HDR it was lighting up my room as if my two table lamps were on. While my other display (a 45" OLED ultrawide) can do about 700 nits for 2% highlights, the 32R84 is advertised at 1500 nits brightness and seems to be able to do at least 1370nits for the full screen. The difference in brightness for both highlights and full screen is very noticeable for me, especially with all the lights on in my normally dimly lit office and gaming space. If you're in a bright area, the 32R84 is definitely a winner. Compared to my OLED display, peak highlights are incredible with the 32R84, and the local dimming has enough zones that black levels are pretty good with minimal (but noticeable) blooming. Two of my favorite demo scenes are the black hole/tesseract scene from Interstellar, and the "Waiting on a Miracle" song (with fireworks) from Encanto. Either of these show both the strengths and weaknesses for HDR on a local dimming capable LCD vs OLED, and the 32R84 comes off pretty well against my OLEDs for almost every aspect of these scenes except the ones that feature highlights on a black background, where the OLED has a massive advantage. Even for those scenes with a black background, though, the 32R84 is a huge step up from the not-much-less expensive 27" HDR LCD display I have thanks to the 1400 zones of local dimming.
Gaming with the 32R84 is really impressive. Overwatch 2 with HDR enabled is really impressive, covering a huge color gamut in addition to some cool specular highlights in various maps and ability effects. The response time is clearly very quick, though there's just a tiny bit of blurring that's noticeable vs my 240hz OLED. Input lag at 165hz is not a concern at all - at least, I'm not anywhere near a good enough gamer to notice any issues at 165hz. I figured Cyberpunk 2077 would be a real test for the 32R84 given the peak highlights for all the neon lights as well as the general darkness of Night City. Here things were a bit more mixed in comparison to an OLED display. The highlights for different neon lights in CP2077 definitely "pop" more with the 32R84, though there's clearly not as much contrast thanks to the perfect blacks on an OLED. What I really was impressed by on the 32R84 is that it seemed to hold up pretty well in terms of response time and ghosting for dark areas. I haven't used a VA panel for gaming in a pretty long time, but the HVA panel in the 32R84 seems to be a significant improvement for gray-to-gray response. While I do think there's a bit more blur on the 32R84 than for my OLED, it's completely unnoticeable unless compared side by side and it's certainly not noticeable enough that any gamer could do more than nit-pick this issue.
Finally, in terms of desktop performance - I found that the default settings for local dimming all seemed to cause a lot of blooming for me in SDR mode. Since I've been using an OLED for so long, I use dark mode for everything in windows, even for my work laptop, and I think this exacerbated the issue for the miniLEDs. I ended up disabling Local Dimming in the SDR profile and it's not been an issue. When using HDR mode, you can choose a "Desktop" profile and it does a much better job even with local dimming enabled. Otherwise, the 32R84 looks fantastic for productivity use, especially if you need a bright display to use in a well-lit room.
#Final thoughts#
The 32R84 is the best LCD monitor I've ever used, and trades blows with my 240hz OLED to the point that I am having a tough time deciding if I'd rather game on the OLED or this TCL display - and that's saying something since the OLED is over twice the price. TCL have done a fantastic job, and I can't way to see future monitors from them.

TCL bringing the QD Mini LED heat
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
TCL isn't known like the Samsung, Sony or LGs of the monitor world, but they have been in the screen game since the 80s. Last year they came out swinging with their first Mini LED monitors.
The R84 and the rest of the 2025 releases are essentially 2.0 versions of the 2024 models. The 16:9 flat 32" R84 standard screen replaces 34" R84 curved screen.
The original QD (Quantum Dot) Mini LED had 1,152 local dimming zones. The R84 has bumped that number up to 1,400 for improved precision.
The R84 gets bright enough that it can make other monitors looks dim in a bright room. While the older R83 is 1600nits vs the 1500nits. The R84 offers better controls with the Halo Control System over the previous local dimming system. The Halo Control System allegedly tightens the light beams so they don't bleed so there is less blooming.
The Quantum Dots, make reds and greens look much more vivid and lifelike than a typical office monitor. Basic office monitors may display darker scenes looking more gray, the R84 uses 1,400 tiny dimming zones to turn off the backlight in dark areas. It’s the closest you can get to the "perfect blacks" of an OLED screen without the risk of permanent image "burn-in."
The R84 offers performance for both gaming and work
For gaming the 165Hz refresh rate offers smooth frames for fast-moving objects in games so they don't look blurry. This means it pairs well even with both PlayStation/Xbox or high-end gaming PCs. Since it's 4K, text is incredibly sharp for work and the 32" matte screen is ideal for office applications.
The R84 also has a USB-C port that can charge your laptop with 90W of power while sending the video signal through a single cable. A must if you're aiming for that clean desk setup.
The biggest potential con is possibly the viewing angles. Because it uses a "VA" panel, the picture looks best when you are sitting directly in front of it. If someone is watching from the side, the colors might look a bit washed out. But as long as I see what I want to see is all that I'm looking for in a computer monitor.
There is a bit of a "Halo" Effect: In very dark scenes with a bright object (like a white mouse cursor on a black background), you might see a slight "glow" or "halo" around that object. It’s much better than most monitors, but not quite as perfect as an OLED.
The R84 has a "matte" anti-glare coating. I prefer this since it's great for reducing reflections, but some users feel it makes the image look slightly less "clear" compared to a glossy smartphone or TV screen.
The TCL 32" R84 signals that TCL has moved past the "intro" phase of monitor manufacturing and created a display that will challenge the dominance of Samsung and LG. The matte VA panel won't be for everyone but it is balanced. It effectively solves the "OLED Dilemma" for many users providing deep blacks and vibrant Quantum Dot colors that gamers and movie buffs look for, but with a level of brightness and "burn-in" peace of mind that OLED can not match. Whether you’re using it as a single-cable productivity hub for your laptop during the day or a 4K powerhouse for your PS5 or PC at night, the R84 proves that TCL’s TV heritage has finally found its home on the desk. If you want the "pop" of a high-end television with the precision of a gaming monitor, the R84 isn't just a safe bet it’s currently one of the best values in the high-end display market.

I have been using this around a week now. The image is beautiful. Refresh rate makes everything so smooth.
My previous 4K monitor was 27 inches. The 4K resolution is much better on a larger 32 inch screen. The smaller screen, at times, made text hard to read, especially in apps that don't resize appropriately.
The menu and navigation is done very nicely with this monitor. I really do not like joystick controls on a monitor, TV, etc. But this joystick is very well designed. No mis-clicks. It has the perfect tension for navigating and you can feel when you press in to click without the joystick moving the cursor.
So far, I have not found any software from TCL. If there are any firmware updates, you won't have an app to find them in. I am hoping these will be discovered by Windows update or maybe in device manager. This is both nice and annoying. I like having software controls for my monitors, but not needing an app is also a blessing.
Out of the box experience was pretty good. I had a brief period where the stand attachment did not make sense. Somehow I inverted the top and bottom when I was going to attach the stand. The color out of the box was near perfect. It was a little bright, but I have a dark room I use for an office. Easy fix with how smooth the menu navigation is.
Adjustments are up, down, tilt and rotate. You have 2 HDMI ports, a USB C and a Display port. There are also two USB A and one USB B connection. The B connection is to connect the other USB ports to the PC.
Overall, this is a fantastic monitor. A very nice size upgrade from my older 27 inch monitor. My son loves the older 27 inch monitor, so everyone is happy.

TCL has always been my go to for big screen televisions. I currently own one of their 75 inch TVs and it's wonderful. I never really thought of them for gaming monitors though, but I am glad I own one now. Unboxing and setup was easy. I chose to mount this on the wall just above my desk so it didn't take up too much space. It's a big for a monitor, 32 inches. I'm used to monitors in the 20 something inch range. Once I had it all installed, I connected my PC via HDMI and started everything up. Right out of the box, before any settings were tuned, it looked so good. Once I adjusted the settings, it looked phenomenal. The colors, contrast and details are just so vibrant and clear. The way this monitor handles blacks and whites is very impressive. I noticed no issues with ghosting or blooming at all. I played a few different types of games to test this and they all looked great. The response time is very very good. The 165hz panel really makes a difference and definitely holds its own no matter what was on the screen. This thing has a good number of video inputs. I also like that it has built in speakers. They sound good for what they are. I usually use a headset or a 2.1 speaker system when on the computer but I have been using the built in speakers for night listening when I am just listening to music or watching a video. It's nice not having to wear a headset at night for things like that. Overall, if you are looking for a large gaming monitor, this TCL 32 inch beast is the way to go.

New Favorite Monitor!

The TCL R84 4K QD-Mini LED Gaming Monitor is absolutely my new favorite! The colors on this monitor absolutely pop and it looks stunning, I have had 4K monitors before but never quite like this one. From gaming to watching movies I can't stop admiring how well TCL did with this one. In addition the menus are very easy to navigate, it looks beautiful on my desk, and it was super easy to setup and connect to my monitor arm. The included cables are a nice touch and definitely high quality, you will need them too because this monitor has so many inputs! Dual HDMI, Display Port and even USB-C which has come in handy already using Dex mode on my Android phone. The highlight of this monitor though definitely has to be the gaming performance. Everything looks amazing on this screen no matter the game type I have played, and my 3080 has no issue pushing games in 4K and still keeping a high refresh rate. Overall the value on this monitor cannot be touched and I believe anyone would have trouble finding one with this many features at the price point. I will be enjoying this one for years to come.
