Best Horror of 2014 in a Great Package

A haunting, legitimately unsettling film about many things (parenting, women's agency, grief) that, like any great horror film, focuses on building a terrifying atmosphere instead of relying on jump scares. Two amazing performances, anchored by first-time writer/director Jennifer Kent's confident direction. The Blu-ray has fantastic video/audio, and includes a handful of of behind-the-scenes featurettes, a lot of cast interviews, and most valuably, Kent's short film "Monster", which was the basis of many ideas she explores in The Babadook. Not a film for the easily disturbed, but not for the typical "blood-and-guts" horror junkie. Highly recommended.

The Babadook an underrated horror movie. The feel of the movie reminds me of an old Lon Chaney film. You have to pay attention to the story line or you won't understand the movie. I love that the story takes place in England, which lends to the creepiness of the film.

I wanted to enjoy this more, but at some point I just felt uncomfortable more than scared, and this is more than a scary movie. But it returns to horror, which really kind of trips up where it seems to be taking you. The door banging, etc. do effectively give you the jumps.

I take this as more of a psychological thriller as opposed to gore-fest. The movie does well in creating tension and keeping the tension throughout the movie. I think the movie does well in of making the mother's situation relatable or at the very least understandable.

The reviews for this film have been excellent so, you may watch it with unrealistically high expectations. I think it is a good movie with some very interesting ideas. Very creepy & yes, scary. Unconventional. Great acting. A worthy addition to your BD collection!

Most horror films these days are lacking, The Babadook actually makes an attempt at being scary with out extreme use of gore. It almost hit its mark, but I personally felt like it was missing something. Overall, the film is good and worth watching.

See? This is what horror can be without shlock and gore. You don't need forced jump-scares and buckets of blood to inspire fear and suspense. Good character development and nice flow to the story.

I really liked this movie. I felt like the director did a great job of pulling you into the story. I also liked the depth of the main characters as well as the struggle between the mother and son. The sound and special effects were on point as well.

The film is a psychological horror film. A single mother is brought a book from her son called The Babadook. Her son has already been kicked out of school and has emotional problems. After reading the book, things go downhill from there for both of them.

This movie is a independent movie based on a short movie. This is more of a psychological movie that plays out very well in my opinion. The packaging on this is also very nice, the slipcover pops up as in the book in the movie and it has reversible art!

Terrifying tale about a mother and her son. Movie went in a whole another direction as to what i expected to have in a normal horror film. You get to feel for the family and the events that happen to them. Would definitely recommend to any horror fan.

    The Babadook Special Edition

The Babadook IS NOT a horror film. Now that that's out of the way what The Babadook is is psychological horror. It's a study of a woman who is on the verge of collapse both mentally and physically. Dealing with a young son and the memory of her deceased husband causes the Babadook to surface and terrorize her home. On the other hand the Babadook is great looking monster. Creepy and fast as it skitters across the ceiling. It's look owes a lot to Ceasar from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Do not watch alone. It's been a while since I have been scared this much with a movie. I didn't know anything about it, the case called my attention. I gave it a try and I wasn't disappointed at all. Good cast, good story and good scares.

I absolutely love this movie. It's brilliant, it's terrifying, it's takes you on a slight emotional rollercoaster and really makes you feel a sadness for the family. I originally wanted to watch this movie because I thought it was going to be strictly horror, but once the film ended I was just in love. Definitely not how I thought it was going to play out, a perfect movie for interpretation, really makes you think, but also lets you just sit back and enjoy the horror ride.

The babadook is one of those movies that probably won't get a lot of attention since it's not a widely known movie. I picked this up on recommendation by a friend. I was so happy I picked this up. I'm glad I paid full price for this movie. it was worth every penny! It isn't your typically jump scare horror film, but a true horror film that is ominous. picture and audio quality are outstanding. please don't let this movie go unnoticed!

    Indie Horror Renaissance!

The Babadook is more than just a silly title, slightly reminiscent of a recent horror favorite Mama. The Babadook features award nominating performances from the two leads. More of a character piece then downright horror, the Babadook along with a few others. Shows that horror doesn't have to following the latest trends, whether they before remakes, J horror, found footage. But that the genre has way more to offer. Highest recommendation!

This movie was said to be one of the scariest ever, and it did not disappoint. Although not the scariest I've ever seen it definitely left me covering my eyes at times and glued to the screen the whole time

This movie was weird because for awhile I didn't know what timeframe it was in. Apparently the main characters are just super poor and it's not shot in the 70s like I had originally thought. Either way it's creepy and weird and the ending is definitely a better (more strange) one than most horror movies since it's not all death or complete relief. EIther way, props to the best buy cashier that recommended this to us.

Leave it to the Aussies to come up with a more substantive creepiness that isn't an insult to one's intelligence. No blood, guts and gore here, just goose bump inducing suspense. Nothing new in the plot line of a spooky presence in the house, but the story arc and execution is first rate which should cause other film makers in the horror genre to wonder why they couldn't have upped their game to this level.

Well done movie. I'm usually not much for what comes out of Britain for films like this, but this one is certainly an exception to what I usually come to expect from a 'serious' British movie.
