This is a good story of a young girl in Germany during the war. After she is dropped of to live with a family that needs the income (from supporting her), she learns that she needs to learn to read in order to get along. It has its happy moments and sad moments.

great movie! during world war 2 about a girl who was orphaned and growing up in turbulent times. great acting, fantastic script. one of the better movies made in last ten years

Not all Germans were evil. This film, as well as the book on which it was based, show that there was love and kindness in World War II Germany. A wonderful story, wonderfully told.

There is something about this movie that I love. I could not find it on TV or Netflix and Best Buy was cheaper then purchasing the Amazon Video download version of this move.

The acting was spectacular; the storyline really tells a story about history we all should know. I’ve watched it several times and still pick up things not seen before.

A movie to be enjoyed by bibliophiles, history buffs and romantics. Yes you will cry. Yet you will find a certain warmth and hopefulness in death talking to you. I like having it in my film library.

A friend told me about this movie and according to her is very good. Then when I saw it for sell at the store I bought it. Great family movie. My young daughter really enjoyed.

I watched the movie then read the book and actually found that order really helpful (normally I prefer the reverse order). The variety of DVD's available at Best Buy is terrific. I am very pleased.

A girl orphaned during the holocaust is alone and afraid until a family takes her in and changes her life. She develops a love for reading that ultimately saves her life.

The holocaust needs to be remembered and the love of education and books shines even in this horrible time Education and learning is still very important to the Jewish culture

To find a DVD you are looking for and then to find it on sale is great. Best Buy is just a great store and I truly enjoy shopping there.

So beautifully written and directed. My heart was breaking throughout this movie and the tears didn't stop long after it was over. This one will stay with me for a long time.

Read the book first, then watch the movie which follows the book very well. A story of love, war, learning, and living! Beautifully produced! A must for Jr High through Adults.

Movie format similar to a fable, but it had a realistic feel for what it was like for a child to grow up in Germany during the war. Acceptable for both children and adults.

I read the book before seeing the movie and was pleasantly surprised that the movie was very similar to the book. I really enjoyed this movie. It was a very touching story about a young girl's tragic life through the point of view of the grim reaper.
