Honestly, not impressed by the quality of this 4k transfer. Just looks like an average 1080p BluRay. Usually these older movies really pop, at least in the color. But not this one.

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Towards the beginning of the film, at least 45 minutes are spent on ONE scene - it's a wedding followed by a wedding reception - where NOTHING happens. The plot is not furthered or anything; you just see a wedding ceremony followed by a reception where you see people dancing and drinking - that's it! For 45 minutes! By the time that scene is over, you don't even wanna watch the rest of the movie.

I saw this movie the first time back in 1978, and it has been on my top list ever since. It was a very different movie in those days, and still is today, compared to what else has come out about this war. The way the movie takes its time to describe the caracters and their background is well worth the time it takes, as it makes you understand so much more about who the 3 young men, and their friends and families, are and why they get torn apart the way they do. The hunting scenes after Mike returns, makes the whole story come together in an incedible way. The acting done by Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken is outstanding, but one must not forget the supporting roles of John Savage, John Cazale and George Dzundza, as they are the catalyst that make the main caracters come alive so believeable. Should be on every film lovers shelf.

The Deer Hunter is a flawed masterpiece. The acting is top notch, the photography superb, and the directing terrific-to a point. Cimino's ego (which alater almost bankrupted a studio and pretty much killed his career) is on full display as he lets too many scenes go on too long. Still, it's a fine work that manages to be simple and complex at the same time. Regarding the blu ray transfer, it is positively gorgeous, putting the dvd copies to shame.

I really appreciate the arts and powerful portrayal by the actors who give their best to enlighten us with their art taking us to places so vividly that we would have never experienced nor visualized, while leaving us with knowledge and giving us space to think, engage in dialogues..what a gift!!!! The Deer Hunter is a compelling story about genuine friendship and love, gaining strength and hope, it explicates the impact of war on loved ones and the emotional challenges faced by those who sacrificed their lives.
