Best MMO in a Long Time

I played the beta and I've been playing the PC version in anticipation for the PS4 release, but I feel the need to write a review as someone who has actually played the game. Somewhere along the way it became popular to hate on this game, and it's completely undeserving of such blind negativity.
First off, this game offers a level of character customization I haven't seen in any other MMO, including both the look of the character and it's assigned abilities and skills. You can make whatever character you want. You can use any armor, fight with any weapon, the abilities in your selected class are the only things you'll have to stick with, so choose carefully. Started off as a Sorcerer but later wanted to use a bow as a weapon? Easily done, just use a bow and start building up those skills. A warrior with a restoration staff for healing? No problem.
Once you finish the opening of the game, you have the freedom to explore that zone you're currently in, or you can travel to a starter island to build up your character in a more self contained environment before venturing off. The world is incredibly detailed and fun to explore.
The combat isn't always perfect, but once you get it to how you like to play it can be very fun and satisfying. I personally enjoy using magic from a distance and then charge in with my two handed sword with my Nord Templar.
Want some armor or new weapons, collect materials out in the world and craft your own. I'm having more fun with crafting than any other game I played, online or off. It's easy to do, but there are also risks to be made when trying to improve your equipment, lots of fun.
This is also the first MMO I've absolutely loved the PVP, I'll be spending a lot of time there.
The controls are simple and will easily map to the PS4 gamepad. I can't see the experience being hindered at all on the consoles. Just buy a wireless keyboard or use the Playstation app for the second screen keyboard for chat.
As with this and previous high profile MMOs, a subscription fee is required. With this type of game there is new content being constantly worked on after release and servers need to be maintained. Continued cash flow to further expand and add to the game is the nature of this genre, and with this type of experience a flat fee is the ideal option. A Free to Play model would destroy the immersive experience and ruin the game in general. A subscription is the better option, trust me.
Give the game a fair chance, you'll more than likely find that you love it.

I hate to write a negative review so quickly but this game is tremendously disappointing. The PS4 version, as was the case with the PS3 version, starts out in an enclosed sort of area and is pretty bland. On PS3 once you get past the opening sequence the game really opens up and catches your attention right away. I found this not the case with the PS4 version. I find it very disappointing that there is so little looting. On the PS3 version essentially every kill you can loot for armor and weapons and more. You can pick plants and loot crates and on and on. With this PS4 version enemies you kill just evaporate and there is no loot. You approach a bookshelf and instead of reading multiple books there is one thing on a bookshelf to activate and you don't know what it is. This may seem like a strange dislike but just about every shelf has something called a lore book or a skill book. Many may think that is a great thing, but it takes away that all right I found a skill book feeling when you are getting them virtually every time.
The menus are very different from prior version and somewhat difficult to navigate when it comes to merchants and cooking and such.
The colors and scenery and graphics are beautiful and there definitely is more fluidity than the prior version. I only played for two hours probably, but encountered no glitching at all. I probably wouldn't have played that long but I so enjoyed the PS3 version I kept thinking this has to get better, this has to get better -- no, it doesn't.
As far as MMO is concerned the only description that comes to mind is a bad version of DCUO. People on horses are whisking past constantly. The biggest difference I noticed from DCUO is any time someone with a mic is near you their audio inundates everything, even if you have no interaction with them. It is to the point that you cannot hear the stock game characters at all, but fortunately the text is captioned on the screen so you can read along, but it is so distracting to have all these conversations cluttering up the background.
I may go back to this game at some point. I was anticipating being up all night and playing what I thought would be an amazing followup and I have no interest in visiting the online version of Skyrim any time soon. I understand many have a different experience, but this humble "gamer" was tremendously disappointed with this version.
