The game has a story that just expects you to keep playing without ever explaining what is going. The main character never really questions all the weird events that are happening around him. It just feels unrealistic and doesn't keep your interest. I stopped playing after two hours of not seeing anything worth continuing on for...

I purchased this game on release day and I am disappointed I wasted the money. I owned the game for about a week before I gave it to a friend to borrow. He had it for about a week as well and couldn't stand it either. I traded it back to best buy for $44 and it was the best decision I could've made.

Fun scary game, similar to RE4

This game is similar to Resident Evil 4, which is one of the best games ever back on the Gamecube then Wii. This game does not live up to RE4, but is still a good game. I had a lot of fun playing it and experiencing the story. The controls are pretty easy to get use to and the game doesn't have a huge learning curve. This game is not for people who want tons of shooting with unlimited ammo. You have to conserve ammo and walk around searching for supplies, such as more health and ammo. Health does not regenerate in this game, which makes it harder. Sometimes it can be smarter to avoid the enemies, than try and take them all on. I felt the game was fair and I liked the game so much, I bought and already played the season pass content for it. The season pass is good for it and really explains what is going on. After beating the game you will have some questions and the additional season pass will explain and answer majority of those questions. The game does a good job of explaining most of what happens, without the season pass content. I didn't play full price for the game and got it for under 25 dollars and for that price I would say it is a steal. The weapons and your character level up in this game by getting brains to use. Also there are keys hidden on each level, which are important to opening lockers that are filled with brains and supplies. The game takes over 12 hours to beat and the graphics are pretty good for the game. Make sure to connect to the internet to download latest patches for the game. The game released a little rough I heard, but were all fixed once I played the game.

This is a decent horror game but nothing great. I was able to get it dirt cheap so I can't complain too much. The games first problem is the screen itself. There is a huge black bar on the top and bottom of the screen and it really limits visibility. Second, the controls are bad and clunky. Nothing feels very smooth about moving the main character. Aiming the gun is odd. Aiming the bolts is awful. He just moves so slowly compared to some enemies and he must be a smoker because he can only run for a few seconds before becoming winded and stopping for 5 seconds unless you upgrade your abilities. Another problem oa the difficulty. I am very good at games, especially games like this. I play this on the easiest setting and still die a good bit. Enemies don't die quick ever. The one thing I do like is the lighting and atmosphere. But I only recommend this game of you can get it very cheap.

Solid Stealth-Horror Game

I am a huge fan of the horror genre for film and games. Also recently released I have been enjoying Alien: Isolation, which is an awesome sci-fi horror game which also greatly uses stealth. Over-all this game is great, it has a few minor issues and glitches, however it is a solid horror-stealth game which I have been highly enjoying. Many are complaining that the game doesn't have good graphics and it is simply too difficult. Well, it doesn't have Next-Gen graphics as it is a multi-generation game (PS3, X-Box 360, PS4, X-Box One, PC), and not every game has to look like the Uncharted games. This game does look very good as they were going for horror style and not Call of Duty.
On release-day there was a small update to install and there is a season-pass available to purchase for $19.99 which will give you the upcoming DLC's.
What they did Right:
+ The graphics are actually quite good. It's very dark, but there is a lot of detail and vividness which really makes the game style awesome. The environment, water, fire, blood and everything has a cool style to it.
+ Very stylistic gaming experience. Reminiscent to Resident Evil 4 and the PS3/PSN game Siren: Blood Curse.
+ While there are multiple ways to do things, keeping quiet and taking down your enemies using stealth is probably the best choice.
What is Lacking...
- There are black bars and the top and bottom of the screen at all times. Very annoying.
- The control takes some getting use to. It seems a little cramped as the camera is too close to the character.
- Cut-scenes seem poorly directed and the character models aren't the best. The game looks better than the cut-scenes.
- While the graphics are good, there is some texture popping throughout the game directly after loading or switching scenes during cut-scenes.
- Longer than desired loading times.
Below are a few tips, personal preference, which I set to make the game more enjoyable:
~ Play the game on Survival Mode. It is not very difficult and there is a bountiful amount of supplies.
~ Set the brightness higher than directed. I have it set to 60%
~ Set controller sensitivity higher, I have mine set to 95%
~ Toggle the sneak button, as you will be spending most of the game in stealth mode.
~ Decrease or turn off the screen grain. It will give the picture better depth and provide a cleaner look.
Over-all a great, challenging horror game and while there are some frustrations with the basic mechanics of the gameplay, it is a great stealth horror game and I highly recommend it!

A Return to Classic Survival Horror

Let me start by saying that this game is tough. In the first chapter, I died about 10 times before finally seeing the opening credits roll. For me, this is not a bad thing as I like a challenge.
I also love survival horror. This game, which is Shinji Mikami masterpiece, shines in all areas to me. While the framerate is 30 FPS and the game is presented in letterbox format (which could put off some), I believe it was created this way to reflect a horror film feel to it. I get that rustic original Resident Evil vibe while still getting the gameplay of Resident Evil 4, which is Mikami's defining game in my opinion. Mikami is the father to the Resident Evil series and also served as a producer on other hits such as the Devil May Cry series and Viewtiful Joe series. This guy knows how to make/produce great games.
Getting back to The Evil Within, the gameplay again has that old school survival horror vibe to it. You will die multiple times. However, the locations that this game takes you through in it's 20+ hour campaign is ripped straight from the best horror flicks. From mental hospitals, wooded forests with dilapidated cabins in the still of the night, to haunted mansions; it's all here. If you love horror flicks and have been waiting on a game to love, buy this. Another throwback is how the game is divided into Chapters, 15 actually, which reminds me of games from yesteryear although being on next gen systems.
I have read reviews that speak on the graphics and texture pop ins. I am playing on the PS4 and have not noticed any pop in. Maybe I am just lucky. And yes, I am that person who stands on the edge of the pier in Chapter 2, marveling at the water effects and lighting of the moon reflecting from the lake while viewing the dark abandoned lighthouse across the sprawl. I love graphics and I take my time in games to enjoy what the developer worked hard to achieve. To me personally, they nailed it with The Evil Within. So while it may take me 30+ hours to beat the game because I tend to stand around and spin the camera to enjoy the views, it may only take the average person 20+ hours as stated above.
Next up, the monsters. Again, this game doesn't disappoint. It is clear that Silent Hill characters influenced some of the monstrosities in The Evil Within. Although, I would be remissed if I didn't say that Resident Evil shows up with the character design as well. You have your butcher that is listening to classical music as he is butchering up a human body right in front of you, to the chainsaw wielding maniac that bashes through doors chasing you relentlessly.
Again, this game is tough. If you have never played a Survival Horror Game and are new to the genre, I suggest playing on the easiest mode starting out or you may get frustrated. Ammo and Syringes are limited, both needed to stay alive, so don't expect to shoot at everything you see. This game plays great for the stealth gamers out there as well. You need strategy to complete chapters....and patience.
The only fault I can say about this game is the story. While it is not really a fault, it can be convuluted and a bit disjointed at times. It isn't that it is bad, it just skips around alot. I would tell you more on that but that would be spoiling the game for you if you intend to buy.
All in all, The Evil Within is exactly what I have been needing for my Survival Horror fix. It has all the elements. Locales, Monsters, Graphics, Tension, Great Pacing and Gore. While the story is a bit all over (until you get it), it is not enough to bring this game down a notch. Great timing for the release as well, as it is the perfect time of year for this game's atmosphere.
