What a fantastic movie and a surprise to find in store! This isn't as epic or grand in scale as The Lord of the Rings but is phenomenal in its own right. I watched this having never heard or read any Phillip Pullman books, but I immediately purchased the entire trilogy after watching this movie. It strikes a perfect chord between thought and action. The visuals are a treat in and of themselves! A great movie to watch with the family and discuss afterwards.

I originally rented the Golden Compass on a whim. I had seen the preview and thought it looked interesting, with imaginative effects and a stellar cast. I was not disappointed. While some may dismiss the film as an opportunity to take advantage of the popularity of Harry Potter, they would be sorely mistaken. The world of the Golden Compass is vivid and creative, and does justice to the source material. However, be warned that in order to make the film, certain aspects of the book (an excellent, bold series) had to be changed for a wider appeal (and to appease the Catholic church). Unfortunately, it seems that the trilogy will not be completed. Still I would recommend the film for its intriguing story and outstanding effects and acting. The blu-ray transfer is excellent and the added features are fun. My only regret is that the story will not continue in the film medium.

So a lot of people did not like the movie, some because Phillip Pullman is aetheist, but in reality it doesnt show religion in a corruptive light, but the people who govern it and a lot of false idols. The movie itself was great, for being the first in the trilogy. most movies of such nature are generally setting up the story. The Subtle Knife (which is next in the series) should be amazing, unfortunately they will probly be using different actors since it will be made by a different studio. Watch the movie, and you will be glad you did. it is a fantastical story of a chosen one rising against a corrupted society, and the band of outcasts she gathers to help her.

Having read the book as well as having seen this movie, I loved the richness of the scenes, and how the main character was portrayed. The only drawback was that they leave you waiting for the next installment of the movie. This movie followed fairly closely to the book. I enjoyed how it was brought to the screen, almost as I had imagined it to be based on the book. It’s a delight to watch.

I really liked the movie. The acting is good. The new star is definitely rising. Just felt that something was missing from the story. I would see the film if only for some of the performances. The effects were top notch.

This was a phenomenal movie. I really liked the acting. I am a huge fan of Nichole Kidman, and thought she did a really good job in this movie. I liked the concept of the movie, and all the imagination that this movie provokes. I wish they would have made the trilogy, or in the very least, expanded on the first movie. They left it wide open, and I would have loved for them to expand on that.

This movie was supposed to be the first of a trilogy, but to my knowledge they are not making the last two movies in this series yet. Still a pretty entertaining movie, though.

I love love love this movie. I have never read the books, but after watching this I just might. Nicole Kidman plays her character very well, cold and icy. I can watch this movie every day and not get bored. There is so much to find new each time you watch it.

The movie was great, full of fantasy and magic. A parallel universe to ours, it's an overall great family film.

This movie is really good for the family, it isn't just for kids. And for you information blu ray is very expensive. This dvd is just as sharp as a blu ray. I recommend you get this movie, the scenes are enriching and the plot is very interesting.

This movie is great and i love the action and sound in it! It only comes with the DTS but thats not really a bad thing. The DTS sounds great and thanks to the update for the PS3 it can now decode this format! Pretty good extras too :)

The Golden Compass is a really great movie it has a lot of twist and turn and great action and special effects. good for everybody kids or adults

Good cinematography but made you want to see the entire story if you've read the books!

This movie is all over the place; very weird concept of having humans having demon animals. Movie drags, characters are flat; main character is a girl who does not seem to be disturbed in the end when she helps to kill a great amount of people. Waste of time watching this painful movie.

i had the misdaventure of actually watching this trainwreck in theares.. but it was a free ticket so:) at no time was the ''adventure'' on screen more fun than the adventure of driving to the movie theatre. Yea im serious.. dont ever EVER watch this, not even a rent DEAD SERIOUS
