    A Very Underrated Movie

This is only the first Baz Luhrmann film I've seen. I'm surprised by all the negative or disinterested reviews this movie has had in the media. The slower pace is not an issue, and made it feel like a movie from the 50's, which brings us a little closer to the time period where the movie takes place. It also takes a little while to engross you in the era and get you into the 20's mindset. The movie is filled with a delicate balance between old and new. The result is that it makes the past feel like modern times for the viewer. Hearing the music, it's just incredible that it evokes the same mood and energy as the Jazz of the 20's. Even if you don't get anything else out of the movie, it's worth it to see the soundtrack in context. The story/plot/acting are good, but I just don't have nearly as much to say. And I don't want to take anything away from the review.

Sorry, my Rodney Dangerfield is showing, but with this film, Gatsby was indeed, great. The performances were pretty good and the story pretty much followed the book, and Luhrmann always intrigues me as a filmmaker, but the choice to have Jay-Z do the music and filming this in 3D is extremely odd at best. Still, this film is really good with the DVD PQ and AQ decent, but the BluRay is where the movie truly shines. The extras are fairly plentiful if short, with some good making of featurettes, but Luhrmann should have provided a commentary, a lengthy making-of or at least a picture in picture track like WB's other films with Maximum Movie Mode. Still, the DVD and extras are decent enough for a price under $10.

I enjoyed seeing the rich atmosphere cultivated by F. Scott Fitzgerald brought to life in such an animate way. I like all of the actors in this movie, but at times their performance could be a little indulgent and come across somewhat like a caricature. The music was an interesting choice. The film's score was beautiful, and while some of the songs written for the movie worked very well, many of them felt severely out of place. I thought it really detracted from establishing a sense of the period. It may have made the characters slightly more accessible to a contemporary audience, but I would have preferred the film's musical approach to be an incorporation of the music of the time into an orchestral score.

Totally underrated, IMHO. Yes, the Redford/Farrow was a more serious, "scholarly" interpretation. This is a huge, gorgeous, Technicolor comic book rendering of the story that puts all writers to shame (since we know we can never top it)! Baz Luhrmann was born to bring Gatsby to life. He "gets out of the way" of the prose by not taking it (or himself) too seriously, and by doing so, the weight of the words speak for themselves. The "Rhapsody in Blue" sequence is nothing short of breathtaking. YES it's over the top -- exactly how Gatsby would have wanted it. Fitzgerald is smiling somewhere, I'm sure of it!

I had always saw the previews and thought this would be a horrible movie. It just didn't appeal to me at all,but my husband decided he wanted to go to the drive-in.Well,the hubs wanted to see Hangover 3 and the movie paired with it was none other than Gatsby.Well,we watched Hangover 3 and thought it was pretty good and as Gatsby started I was unsure about it.Well, the more I watched the more I loved it! The plot was wonderful and you couldn't help but get swept up in all the glamour and excitement.I felt like I had been transported back in time and got lost in the movie and experience.I would definitely say if you have any doubts about this movie, just give it a chance.

Although critically, The Great Gatsby may lean too far into it's excessive demeanor as it replicates the decadence of the roaring 20s, one can't help but marvel at that the incredible colors and design that this movie lovingly presents. Say what you will about the movie's adaptation of the classic Fitzgerald novel, this movie is still an excellent showcase of 4K and makes for an excellent demo of what 4K picture technology can truly offer.

A Decent Remake of The Great Gatsby

Leonardo DiCaprio had big shoes to fill when he took the title role for a movie remake that was masterfully acted by Robert Redford. If Redford's performance was understated, then DiCaprio's was over the top. Though I'm not sure either actor was able to successfully portray the tragic character created by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This movie was like the original but on steroids when it came to sets, costumes and acting. Parts of the movie were more entertaining and definitely more eye candy than the original, especially for those who enjoy period pieces.

    Amazing Visuals and Acting

Based on the classic novel, The Great Gatsby tells the story of Nick, who’s trying to make his way in the world, and the doomed romance of Gatsby and his married lover, Daisy. First, I want to establish that I have read the Great Gatsby and did not particularly like it. Everything I liked about this movie comes from Baz Luhrmann, not F. Scott Fitzgerald. The visual design and set designs are amazing, the acting is top notch (well…maybe not from Tobey Maguire), and the movie just plain looks amazing. The soundtrack is also well done and interesting, mixing modern music with period themes.

This Great Gatsby film looked amazing when I saw it in theatres when it first came out. When I saw the 4K HDR version available I figured it'd be a good test of my "new" 4K HDR system (this is the first 4K HDR BluRay I've bought) It was just stunning. At times it felt more like looking through a window to another world rather than watching a film on a TV at home. This is one of those ones that proves that no matter how good streaming gets, there will always be a place for "home video" sales.

The 4K is good, but honestly I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade over the Blu-ray version. The computer generated landscapes used in many scenes look more fake in 4K, and there is no audio upgrade. This movie would sound SO GOOD in Atmos, bummer it didn’t happen. If it’s the same price as the Blu-ray, buy the 4K version, otherwise go with the Blu-ray.

Baz Luhrmann takes too long for my taste. Make more movies sir! The frenetic modern pacing/music applied to a swinging twenties time is very cool to see. Very similar to what he pulled on Moulin Rogue. Leo is great as Gatsby (no pun) but he is always good. And Tobey Maguire also steals the movie (in my mind) even if most will find his performance thankless cause its so subdued. He's a mediocre man witnessing the drama and lifes of greater bigger people. That's the whole point!

I've watched this movie probably a hundred times on HBO on demand, I decided to buy the bluray once it was removed from on demand I made sure it has the digital copy so I could also stream it at anytime. The movie itself is great the direction, the cinematography were all unique, the movie flows well, the story fast and fluid. Of course if you've read the book you know the ending and how everything turns out for Gatsby. At the price especially it's a definite buy.

The Great Gatsby remains a timeless tale of the dangers of excess and tragedy, and Bas Lehrman does a fairly faithful job of adapting the book for the big screen. Personally, I enjoyed the effects; many people claim they're 'too CGI', to which I'd reply 'duh' and or 'hello', but it's a fun take on the concept of a 1920's New York that is loaded with starry-eyed dreamers, new and old wealth and the myriad problems that plague the time such as racism, adultery and poverty. All in all, definitely worth watching.

This is a very good movie but it could have been better. I felt like the movie focused too much on the cinematography (although great) instead of on the literary meaning that had made the novel even better. Still, it was a good movie. My only problem was that it seemed like my particular DVD was in a shipment where many of it's products were slightly damaged though handling and transportation. I had looked through several of them and for all, the cover of it was ripped or slightly torn up.

Gatsby was well directed and shot, in my opinion. I haven't read the book so I can't speak to how accurately it was portrayed on film but I enjoyed watching the movie. It's not something I'd watch over and over again. The modern music was jarring to me because it was set in the 1920s but I know it's supposed to be artisic, etc. I liked watching Gatsby's character unfold as you learn more about him and his past. Overall, it was a good movie and I'd recommend watching it at least once.

The Great Gatsby 2 Pack (Blu-ray Disc) is a very good movie. I know that a lot of people do not like Leonardo DiCaprio, but I think that he is a very good, versatile and competent actor. An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await

I had purchased the first DVD of The Great Gatsby when it first came out. I did not think there would be a huge difference in the picture quality when Blu-Ray was released. My daughter had purchased the Blu-Ray when it was released and told me the difference was worth the purchase, so I bought the 4K! Phenomenal difference!

I really like how the Director Baz Luhrman (Moulin Rouge) facilitated this wonderful, colorful and musical film. He stayed true to the story and symbolism of the book by adding rich color schemes through green screen, great scripting and acting by all characters and a rich music score with contemporary artists singing contemporary tracks with 1920s nuances. It is a really great story that I could watch over and over again "Old Sport!" DiCaprio, Mulligan, and Maguire are superb!
