Suppose you were a kid in foster care who suddenly realized that kids like you were an expendable part of the system. You know you have a mother somewhere who you believe wants you back but in the mean time you cannot put down roots for fear of never finding her. Gilly is a very smart kid who has been maybe a little too successful at never remaining in a foster home too long. Keep moving and maybe you'll find your mother. Gilly lands in a new foster home and immediately begins her emotional and physical exit, doing everything in her power to be sent away to someplace new. However, this time, she encounters a loving, understanding and concerned foster mother, as well as a teacher who is her match in every way. Gilly tries all her proven tactics but encounters love and understanding at every turn. It is then that she tries a new, unproven tactic that may just be her youthful undoing. The Great Gilly Hopkins has a terrific, award-winning cast of supporting characters and more than enough emotion for most viewers. Gilly's strength and cunning are proof of the journey she is taking.

I bought this movie because of what Octavio Spencer and Kathy Bates usually brings to the screen. Boy did I pick a winner. It had it’s twists and turns, highs and lows and tugged at my heartstrings. It was hard fighting back the tears. I’d definitely recommend this to the entire family. I thought the cast did a wonderful job sharing loads of information some of the supporting cast I forgot, but seem them many times as established actors and actresses. I’m gonna have to look out for actress Sophie Nelisse.

This Movie should have had wider distribution, I guess there weren't enough explosions and CGI. Excellent cast, great script, based on a fantastic story. Great movie for adults and teens, but you can definitely feel comfortable watching it with kids.
