What can I say except that this is an average movie that was not my favorite. The quality of the move is awesome though.

I did not read the book, but I saw this movie twice and I must say that it has humor, sadness, bold messages without being preachy, and it makes people wake up as to what you might be saying about someone when they are not in the room, - Just because they have a different lifestyle or skin color doesn't mean they are less than you or slow for that matter. Bryce Dallas Howard ( Ms.Hilly Holbrook) the primary antagonist in the film does a superb job at being a * beep* you would never know that she was raised by Ron Howard ( her father). In an interview she even admitted " It was scary, how naturally it came..being so mean". Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastin ( and a too brief Sissy Spacek ) make a great cast of catty women and maids. Who learn how to get along the hard way- and how life used to be and probably still is for racist people and those it hurts. It sounds preachy, but its hilarious- and touching.

I've seen this movie three times already and cannot get enough. I took my family, my friends (the hardest of thugs), and a couple of dates. Everyone loved it. I'll be buying this for a couple of friends and will even buy for the Christmas party at work for the White Elephant and hope that I get it back.
I guarantee you will laugh, cry, and feel every emotion imaginable watching this movie. I wish more movies were made like this.
This will not disappoint. I promise! If so, I'll refund your money.

A Hidden Gem

I am African American man who was reluctant to see the movie because of the plot and it being so called chic flix. I bought the DVD for my wife as a Christmas gift she was reluctant to watch in the theaters being from the South. We loved the movie probably the best book we had seen
for a drama in 2011. Does indeed give you insight into life in the South for black maids in the 1960's and the unbelievable mentality of those they worked for.

I normally hate movies based on books, but this was such a great movie! It stuck to the book, which was perfect, and the acting/directing/casting was very good as well. I am getting it for several family members for Christmas and hoping someone gets it for me as well!

The film begins with Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) giving a brief insight into the lives herself and her community who work, for the most part, as domestic staff for the white elite of Jackson, Mississippi. How she’s spent most of her life raising white children and how she’d recently lost her own son. And Minnie, her friend, (played by Octavia Spencer) loses her job due to an inability to abide by unjust rules and hold her tongue as she’s expected to.
Meanwhile, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan (played by Emma Stone) has returned home from college with a degree and plans to use it. An idea that is lost on her friends and family who saw college as a means to an end in their quest for suitable husbands who could support them and their future children in the manner they’ve become accustomed to thanks to their upbringing. And while Skeeter(Stone) finds a job writing a column about cooking and other matters she has little to no expertise on and a valuable resource for the column in Aibileen (Davis), she soon finds her real passion in chronicling the life, times, and injustices of African American domestic servants in Jackson.
I’ve heard the criticisms leveled on this film and, in all honesty, they’re not wrong. It’s depiction of racism is, for the most part watered down or rose-colored. And the film’s main antagonist is a twitchy social butterfly whose only real power is her standing. That might make sense if her near-senile mother weren’t heckling her in the background during those important social events. It is funny, the characters that are the actual focus of the film are endearing and the conclusion is satisfying enough without being too far-fetched to be believable.

A great movie that should have been completed 20 years ago pointing out the struggles and hardships that were endured along with some very serious decisions made without all the knowledge because they were considered less than white folk - --- what a shame!

We saw the movie in the theaters and loved it. We also read the book before we saw the movie. The movie is probably one of the best I've ever seen. It sticks pretty closely to the book. The dvd version is just as good as the theaters.

Apart from the excellent acting, this movie personally taught me a lot about a very dark period in this countries history. Have we come a long way? No. We need to go much further.
'The Help' deserves as many Oscars as it can garnish.

I absolutely loved this movie. I was cheering and crying and laughing. It's rare that a movie has so many emotions in it and can still tell a good story.

I loved this movie, everyone needs to see it! The story is saddening on how people truly can act on racism. The lady that I had keep my son was just like a family member, we love her as a family member!
