The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remains one of the most charming and unique entries in Nintendo’s legendary franchise. Originally released in 1993 for the Game Boy, and later reimagined in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, the game has consistently stood out for its imaginative world, engaging puzzles, and heartfelt narrative.
From the moment Link awakens on the mysterious Koholint Island, the tone feels distinct from other Zelda titles. The setting departs from the familiar kingdom of Hyrule, trading castles and fields for a dreamlike island inhabited by quirky, memorable characters. The story’s central mystery—the nature of the Wind Fish and Link’s quest to awaken it—creates an emotional undercurrent that resonates long after the credits roll.
Gameplay remains faithful to the series’ formula of exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving, while introducing clever twists. Dungeons are expertly designed, each with inventive mechanics that challenge the player without ever feeling unfair. The addition of side quests, such as the beloved trading sequence, enhances the sense of adventure and discovery.
The 2019 remake elevates the experience with a vibrant, toy-like art style that perfectly captures the game’s whimsical spirit. The new presentation brings Koholint Island to life with stunning detail, while the updated soundtrack breathes fresh energy into its iconic melodies. Quality-of-life improvements—such as streamlined item management—make gameplay smoother without compromising the original’s charm.
If there is a criticism to be made, it lies in the occasional performance dips in the Switch version and the relatively short playtime compared to modern Zelda titles. However, these issues are minor when weighed against the overall experience.
In the end, Link’s Awakening stands as both a nostalgic masterpiece and a timeless adventure. Whether you are experiencing the Game Boy original or the Switch remake, it is a captivating journey that highlights the heart and imagination at the core of the Zelda series.
Verdict: A magical and enduring classic that every Zelda fan—and every fan of adventure games—should experience.

I’ve been a fan of Zelda games since the original released for the NES. My personal favorite in the series is A Link to the Past and you can bet I spent a lot of time playing that game. I’m a huge fan of the top down versions of these games because there’s so much character and attention to detail with all of the maps. I never got around to playing Link’s Awakening when it released on the gameboy because I didn’t believe a huge sprawling world would be represented well on the portable format. I was wrong.
Enter Link’s Awakening for the Switch! A top down Zelda that follows the same formula I grew to love with the original and A Link to the Past with a fresh coat of paint! The music is wonderful, the graphics are beautiful and the secrets are aplenty! There are exclusive dungeons that have unique items in each of them that allow you to access different areas and huge bosses that are fun to battle. The over world map is detailed enough to plan where you need to go and I really like having the ability to leave markers for yourself to reference later if you come across a potential secret you don’t have access to. It’s a neat and tidy package that begs to be opened.
With glowing praise there will always be cons and the issues I have with the game aren’t gamebreaking but rather minor annoyances. You are forced to use the analog rather than the dpad which imo felt more suited to this game and the frame rate is all over the place while exiting and entering buildings and caves. The game also isn’t very long either. My gametime clocked in at just under 25 hours which for a Zelda game is pretty low. The story is also a little shallow as well.
My issues aside this game is absolutely worth playing if you’ve never experienced it before. I think $60 is a bit steep for the amount of game you get here but it’s Zelda in it’s finest format and that alone should warrant a purchase from the people that appreciate the format.
Good remake. Still a little rough around the edges

Overall this is a good game. A solid 15-20 hour game with a lot of charm, humor, and creativity.
The only real drawback is the game’s frame rate constantly stutters. It tries to handle a full 60 fps but when moving from screen to screen the game dips into what seems like the 30s. It’s not a good look and I hope they find a way to fix this.
As a remake it handles a lot of the jank from the original game very well. It maps certain items to buttons permanently instead of making you switch them out all the time.
The game has a cute art style, some great puzzles and dungeons, and is definitely worth picking up, if you think it’s worth it.
I myself would value this game at $30 or $40 and not a full $60 considering the game’s length as well as being a remake of an existing game. Also the frame drops are a concern.
I suppose this would be an 8/10.

This is what Zelda is all about, Not running around for 20 minutes to find the same temples & enemies to the point of boredom like in botw. You actually feel like you make progress in this one. Story, music, controls, graphics, all is here.

This remake of Link’s awakening looks amazing! Honestly one of my favorite stories in the zelda series. Framerate can be a bit slow at times, but overall a pretty good experience. Great music, great visuals, fantastic story. If you’re a fan of the 2D Zelda formula, this is a must.

The remake is a wonderful homage to an amazingly classic Zelda game.
Pros -
It plays great
Wonderful story
Challenging (but not too much) puzzles.
It looks lovely and a bit cute. While I was initially taken a bit aback, it does fit the charm of this title specifically.
Cons -
A bit of slowdown in certain areas (I am hopeful for a patch)
Some of the puzzles are a bit tedious to find the answers to.
Overall highly recommended!

I have played the original game for the Gameboy back in the day and bought it on the 3DS when it came out for virtual console. I have always liked playing the game but never finished it. Now with this release of the game for the Switch, it made me want to fully complete it more than ever.
Plays pretty much the same as the original with some slight tweaks. The game looks gorgeous with the new art style used and makes replaying this game feel more unique. It is not a super long game but it doesn't need to be. This one of the best 2d Zelda games behind A Link between Worlds and a Link to the Past. (though I have not played it yet)
I highly recommend the game for anyone that loves The Legend of Zelda and I recommend the game as well for anyone that hasn't played a Zelda game.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019) Switch
Link’s Awakening has always been one of my very favorites in the franchise and I played the game as a kid many times on my GameBoy! I remember being super blown away that it had cameos from other Nintendo games in it (this was before the Smash days, it was rare to see crossovers). It’s such a quirky game and the people who worked on it were inspired by Twin Peaks of all things. There’s a kinda dark subtext with having Link be on a quest to essentially destroy the universe.
I loved the graphics in the remake, it looks like you are playing in a toy box. That being said, at least my copy had some serious frame rate issues where it was frequently dropping from 60 FPS down to 30 FPS. I’m not a stickler but it’s really noticeable and I’m surprised this never got patched out. It ran like this in both handheld and docked mode. It’s still very playable tho. Other than that it’s just like playing the original albeit with better graphics and music. There are a couple extra things (and a dungeon maker). I remembered everything you had to do from the numerous times I have beat so I blew through it. I still enjoy this game a whole bunch. <3

This game excels in every aspect. Great graphic style, great music, great story, great characters, great environments and puzzles to explore. My only complaint, not long enough.

Another great Zelda game for the books. I know it's a remake but since I have never played the original I was totally stoked to grab this puppy and I was not disappointed. Great graphics on the new switch and an HDTV. This game is so fun, the puzzles are challenging enough but not too much that you want to throw your controller. Fun and nostalgic like the original games. Don't get me wrong I love BOTW but this is a great blast from the past in an improved package. If you love classic Zelda games you will not be dissappointed. I mean who wouldn't want to spend hours chopping grass and getting coins! LOL

Great game! I'm not a big Zelda fan in fact this is my first one and i think that it is a great introduction to the series. It has a great art style consistent frame rate and most importantly fun gameplay I really like that i can explore but the world isn't too big so that it feels empty or i feel overwhelmed the puzzles especially later on are fairly challenging and progression goes at just the right pace overall I think this game is a must buy and a great introduction to the series

I think I must have fully played the original Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy about a dozen times or more as a kid. I loved that game. And this new version is even better. The art style is fantastic. If Breath of the Wild seem too daunting or gigantic, Link’s Awakening should be a more welcome and relaxing play-through. But the addition of a hard mode will still challenge more seasoned players.
