Omg! This was such a long time coming. If any movies (especially the 1st of the 3), needed the 4k treatment, it was these. The 1st movie in particular looked very bad in the standard blu ray when it was originally released, which was such a shame. Thankfully, Peter Jackson decided to make some improvements. And WOW, this doesn't disappoint one bit! Yes, it's pricey, but well worth it.

I have the extended edition dvd box set, the extended edition Blu Ray box set, and now this, the 4K extended edition box set which also includes the regular 4K theatrical versions. This 4K box set also has each movie encoded with Dolby Atmos and I must say it once again is my reference movies when I want to hear what my system is truly capable of. As no other movies can come close to the audio and video quality. I would have paid twice the price now that I know how great this extended edition box set looks and sounds! Absolutely top notch in my 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos theater. I highly recommend this trilogy to all of you that have high end home theaters! It’s the best I’ve ever seen and heard yet! Truly phenomenal!

Really think they did this trilogy the right way for 4K release. On the extended editions they include more scenes than any previous release I know of. This made the films significantly longer than the theatrical release. Instead of trying to fit these long extended editions on one disc they made the best choice for visual and audio quality and put the extended editions on two discs. I appreciate that a lot. I have these on Blu Ray and while the improvement in picture and sound quality is not huge if you are a big fan of the trilogy I do believe it is worth the money.

Middle Earth Looks Great in 4K

Well, what can one say about these films that hasn't been said before? They're modern-day classics, ones that are given a very nice upgrade to the 4K UHD format. While this set does include both the theatrical and extended editions of all three films in the "Lord of the Rings" saga, the copious amounts of supplemental material that has graced previous editions have not been included. That said, a super deluxe 4K UHD edition of all six "Middle Earth" films is set for a release next summer that will most likely carry over all of the previous extras (and apparently some new ones as well). If you just want the films, this is the way to go.

One 4K Trilogy to Rule Them All!

Beyond amazing. Perhaps the greatest fantasy ever put to film. The 4K restoration is incredible and the HDR color really makes everything seem more realistic. It hardly shows its age (nearly 20 years old) which is pretty unbelievable--it shows how well these movies were made in the first place. The extended editions are the leagues better than the theatrical version. Overall, this is totally worth the somewhat steep price-tag and the 4K restore gets a 10/10 from me. Invest in a good 4K TV with HDR and a nice 4K player (a good sound system as well!) and experience this trilogy in its best form. Enjoy!

I was afraid tinkering with the films would be unnecessary and garish, but they really did just clean everything up. The 4K definition is nice of course, but it’s the audio that is most dramatically improved. I’m picking up bits I never noticed and I’ve seen these films several dozen times each. But also, ever since the DVD’s these films have suffered, at least to my admittedly weak ears, from the score overpowering the dialogue. No longer an issue here. This release of the films really is just taking what exists and cleaning it up which is all that these masterpieces required.

These are some of the best films ever made. But the box they come in is very poor quality and came broken in multiple ways, this has been the experience of MANY people so its clearly a common problem. I'd suggest putting these discs in a different container asap. This 4K cut of the films is generally excellent, the HDR and remastered sound would make this the definitive version of the films, if it didnt have some pretty aggressive and ugly DNR. (digital noise reduction) which makes some scene appear to be smeared with Vaseline.

Worth the WAIT for EXTENDED Versions 4K and Atmos

Im guessing most people bought this as an upgrade from the Dvd versions or Bluray versions. I had the extended Dvds, so for me, this was quite the visual upgrade, the sound as well, but at the 7.1mix I had before not quite a drastic jump into Atmos, because I still couple upmix the original 7.1. Either way, a great purchase, and worth the wait for to go from dvd quality, to 4k and Dolby Atmos now. Some films are better at sound, and some at visuals, but ALL are an upgrade and worth the price when combined together in one package.

I purchased The Hobbit trilogy in 4K and was extremely impressed with it so I had high hopes for The Lord of the Rings trilogy 4K discs. The application of HDR does make the movies look much more vibrant and interesting. Unfortunately, the LotR trilogy doesn't transfer to 4K nearly as well as The Hobbit did because LotR is much older than The Hobbit which affects how it was shot as well as the quality of its CGI. So while this 4K transfer is pretty good and they upscaled the CGI well enough for viewing at a distance, people with bigger screens and/or sitting really close may see the film show its age if they have eyes for such details. Pretty good (not great) 4K picture aside, the sound is fantastic and those of us who purchased Blu-Ray discs early on can now get digital codes for these movies which is nice. Overall, this is a no-brainer for LotR fans like myself to pick up again to see it all in its greatest glory. However, just temper your expectations as far as picture sharpness goes and you'll be fine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this edition of the films. I know there’s some consternation around the picture quality but I personally found it to be a non issue, I’m not freezing the movie looking for flaws and I’m glad many of the digital scenes were rerendered, and in my opinion look better integrated into the filmed counterparts. The big win here is the Atmos soundtrack. I could go on forever about how awesome it sounds but I’ll leave it for you to experience. The Mines of Moria is a shining example of Atmos sound and is now probably my go to scene to show off my Atmos setup.

I feel like there isn't much to say here... its the latest remaster of the extended LOTR movies in Ultra HD. If you like them, this is a great purchase to support the franchise and get yourself the latest and greatest version. If you haven't yet watched the movies... then what are you doing!? I actually recommend starting with the regular edition of Fellowship if starting with a new viewer. The extended edition adds good things, but it can be a very slow start for a new watcher. Best to do regular Fellowship then the extended editions of the other two.

So glad to finally have this set of all the Lord of the Rings movies in 4k. The picture quality compared to the 1080p Blu Ray is amazing. The Dolby Atmos sound track on a home theater setup is a treat to your ears. The only complaint I have is inside the package the disc holder is very flimsy and doesn't hold up very well. I already had the previous Blu Ray extended book set that I bought from Best buy as well and just transferred the discs from this set to the Blu Ray book set with the special features. I also like how the book set looks on a movie rack compared to this set.

Very happy with this purchase. Best buy always ship's fast and package arrived in perfect shape. This collection is nice because it has both theatrical and extended versions of the movie. The 4k looks amazing and audio plays in Dolby Tru HD ( I believe Dolby Atmos if you have it ) so that was a huge plus for me. Not exactly cheap but worth it if you're a fan and have a nice TV and surround sound set-up.

The Lord of the Rings movies are some of the most epic movies ever made. With the edition of 4k HDR and Dolby Atmos they are even more epic and a must own. This collection comes with the theatrical and extended version if each film. I'm not sure why anyone would want to watch the theatrical version over the extended version but they are included if that's your cup of tea. So set back, enjoy a second breakfast and take an epic journey from the shire to Mordor as you've never seen it or heard it before.

The shots taken on this film is just incredible. Not everyone has the same tv or same display settings, heck another variable is the type of 4k blu-ray player you own. You should be able to notice the upgrade in color and resolution compared to the bluray of recent years. It's a bit pricey still but still an amazing set that has both the extended and theatrical. Only con is no special features until later this year in a separate release.

I am very pleased with the transfer for the picture and audio quality on this set. Howard Shores’ soundtrack is quality reference audio. The inclusion of both the theatrical and extended versions is a plus. I typically watch both trilogies in theatrical release order, however I recommend, for those who have never seen the extended versions, to watch them in chronological order for continuity between the two. ( Hobbit reviewed separately). Supposedly, a new release with new special features will be released in 2021.

In early 2021, I had the opportunity to see all three LOTR movies (the theatrical versions) on my local IMAX screen. And although I enjoyed the films themselves, the image quality was seriously pixelated and lacking, particularly in the wide shots—it almost looked like 2K footage (or less) projected on a 4K or even 6K screen. It frankly made me concerned that these 4K discs were going to look the same way. Thankfully, they’re not that bad, aside from a few visual effects that look sort of like a “posterizing” effect (like if you took a pixelated, blown-up image and blurred it a little—yeah, it’s less pixelated, but it still looks off). However, it doesn’t change the fact that I love this trilogy, and this is overall a good transfer. (If they had sold the theatrical and extended editions separately, I personally would have only purchased the former, but I’ll take what I can get!)

One of the all-time best movies/trilogies, now looking and sounding better than ever. I have a 9.2 Atmos setup with Sony 4k Dolby Vision compatible Ultra HD Bluray and TV. These movies made all the work and money setting it up worth every penny! This is a must-have if you love these movies and the TV to enjoy the new 4K HDR. They simply Pop and during dark scenes look amazing and detailed. The sound? One of the best soundtracks for my Atmos system yet. Completely enveloping, especially during scenes underground.
