This was an upgrade from DVD to 4k so the difference in picture quality is substantial. I recently watched all three movies streaming on HBO Max in HD. The 4k picture is noticeably better than that as well. In short, the picture quality is amazing! The sound is also much improved. As I am without Atmos, I am watching in Dolby TrueHD 7.1. The prologue in Fellowship gave me chills. Just amazing. Get it!
Note: I have never owned or seen the standard Blu-ray versions so I can't comment on the color timing, etc.

Not the upgrade it could be, but still great.

Some movies get tender, loving upgrades. Frame by frame from the original negatives. These movies didn’t get that treatment for their 4k upgrade. Heavy Noise reduction and over processing makes the actors look like plastic. Special effects have been slightly improved from the 2k originals and better blended into the filmed scenes, but unfortunately the overprocessed live elements make the cgi look more make compared to the original theatrical release.
Overall, these movies never looked better at home, but they definitely CAN look better. Audio is superb. The Atmos bathes the senses. Battles now have individual cries, howls, and clashes instead of the aural chaos of earlier mixes.
If anything, it’s great for scenes inside caves. You can hear the openness. It’s hard to describe. Sound engineers deserve tons of recognition.

These movies are great; you’ve already made up your mind about what you think about them within the past 20 years. As for the 4K remaster, if you have the right equipment to enjoy the home theater experience, the audio and video upgrade is wonderful. The areas where the CGI looked spotty in previous releases (the Ents, for instance) are now clearer, and it blends better with the surroundings. Gone is the tint from the Blu-rays as well. I have few issues with it, enjoyed rewatching them in the sharper resolution, and picking up on more of the dialogue. The effects/films are still made with early-2000s technology, so it’s not a game-changer, but as mentioned the image is improved.

Great trilogy. This set includes both the theatrical editions and the extended editions in 4K. I do wish they had used less grain reduction to eliminate film grain. It robs the image of the very finest layers of detail that the sharpest 4K Blu-rays deliver. But, the discs still look very good--light years beyond the regular Blu-rays.
Still a must for any fan, these discs could have been even better if they hadn't insisted on so severely erasing the film grain.

Excellent quality. The remastered 4K version of this Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit Trilogy both have the theatrical and extended versions. 4K provides a noticeable upgrade from standard HD in terms of picture sharpness and motion. Both look terrific on my new LG OLED TV and Panasonic UHD 4K player both also bought at BestBuy. All discs played flawlessly with no skips or issues on the player. Peter Jackson and crew did a great job with the remastering.

Definitely an upgrade over the previously released Blu-rays. I haven’t yet watched them all the way through but from what I have seen, these are a vast improvement. The most noticeable thing to me was the color grading. These are far less over saturated compared to the Blu-ray, which give them a more natural look to my eyes. The increased definition and clarity is terrific as well. These movies have always sounded great and sound us even better here.

I bought these movies a few days after the new 4K transfers were released, because the initial reviews were stellar. I even watched a little BTS vignette about how Peter Jackson himself worked with the restoration team to get the picture exactly the way he wanted. How could it go wrong?
Don’t get me wrong, the image still looks great. The HDR really is especially effective on some scenes (squinting your eyes due to how bright a torch is is a good example). But there is just an over-abundance of Digital Noise Reduction across all three movies. So many beautiful exterior landscape shots are marred by heavy DNR, that causes fine detail like grass to look muddy with zero definition. Characters faces appear over-smoothed and waxy. And when the DNR has rubbed away too much detail, SHARPENING is added to some shots that give it a crunchy look to it, with clear haloing happening in the details on characters faces.
The choice for this is puzzling to say the least, until Peter Jackson had said it was because he wanted both TLOTR and The Hobbit trilogies to have one unifying look across all movies. While I can understand that reasoning, I don’t understand why he chose TLOTR, the more widely acclaimed and respected films, to have to be altered to fit The Hobbit’s digital aesthetic instead of the other way around. It really diminishes what would otherwise be a phenomenal transfer. Colors look excellent, and the Dolby Atmos tracks are most certainly the best these movies have ever sounded. Unfortunately, the same will most likely be true about the video as well.

Just finished watching the first film of the trilogy : “ The Fellowship Of The Ring “ . The darker , tough to see scenes in the Blu-ray edition look much better in this 4K upgrade. Everything about this 4K version pops in contrast, color , and sound. I understand it’s expensive but If you’re a big fan of this franchise get this upgrade to 4K. I can’t wait to see the other two films. Well worth it if you can afford it.

Got this on sale, but well worth the full price. The pixelation issue on the bluray during the darker scenes has been addressed and looks lighter and smooth. The trilogy looks awesome on my 4k television. Equally appealing is the audio soundtrack, with thunderous bass and high pitch tweeter echo throughout the room from my sound bar. Its the theater at home experience and the best answer for movie watching during this pandemic

I may be a bit biased on my review for these movies, as they are my all time faves, but, this is the best upgrade from BD to 4K UHD that I’ve seen. The atmos is quite good as is the all around sound.
If you have the special edition BD of these, you’ll need to keep them because the 4K set does not come with the Appendices.

While this is a favorite of my wife and I, it really is more beautiful in 4K. The colors pop more, the layout of the discs are nice, and it’s a good value, too. Good value for $90?! You’re thinking I’m crazy, huh? You get the theatrical and extended versions. The discs layout is the theatrical versions first, then the extended versions next. Can’t wait to buy the Hobbit pack next!

Really good picture quality. I have a LG 4ktv with HDR and it looks really good. Better than the blu ray version that I have. If you're hesitant to get the 4k version, don't be, it's a really good step up from the blu ray version. At times, with the right lighting, I felt like I was looking at them in person. And you have to watch the extended versions to get the full experience.

I have had an LG OLED TV, a Sony 4k player and DT surround sound system for over five years and have watched dozens of 4k movies. For older "remastered" movies there have been a few decent renderings but this trilogy is by FAR the best I have ever seen. Visuals are incredibly immersive, audio is stunning and just everything about these movies oozes quality. I00% worth the price!

Looks and sounds absolutely amazing! The colors and details are crisp. I like the way cleaned up the CGI, even though it is noticeable, it's definitely a lot better than the previous Blu-ray versions. I'm so glad to have the both the extended and theatrical cuts along with the digital versions of both as well. Rarely do I spend this kind of money on a movie, but it is worth every penny.

I purchased the standard release (as opposed to the Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook) of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (includes: Theatrical & Extended Editions) [4K UHD Blu-ray] and couldn't be happier. Great movies and great 4K transfers.

These movies were made for a 4k experience. The audio from these movies gave my surround sound as much of a run for its money as any disc i own. Three great movies remastered in 4k. Really felt like I was going back to the theater to watch them. A must have for any LOTR rings fan. Add both the original and extended versions of the films and it is as good a set as I could ask for.

while the price is a bit much being you don't even get the bluray disks with the bundle or the older DVD extra's disk which come with the bluray edition for the extended set. it does look a LOT better then the bluray or DVD editions of those movies. Unlike the Hobbit which was shot on digital camera's, these were still done in film. So if you love these movies then get it.

A great addition to my collection, I'm a big fan of collectors additions and Steelbooks and I can easily say this is my favorite collection that's not either. The picture looks great on my 4k TV (Samsung) and the packaging is solid. If you're a big fan of LotR, and you haven't upgraded, then it's time.

One of the greatest film series of all time. It's insane how well these hold up still to this day. The transfers on this release are breathtaking. The only way to watch these films now. Of course we're getting the whole deluxe Middle Earth set later with all the special features but knowing that this is how great the transfers look - you can't go wrong picking it up now.
