Really glad they finally released these on 4K UHD and with digital code included but this collectors edition is very very obviously cheap. Thin cardboard for the outside casing (was expecting something more leather-like) and the ring included is very light and feels like a toy more than a ring. Probably would be better served buying the (sold out) steelbooks or the regular 4K Trilogy to be completely honest.

Save your money and just get the 4k movies without the collectors packaging. The quality of the outer packaging is suspect and no where near as good as the older blu ray set. The ring itself is higher quality than I expected but it’s not worth the extra $60. As for the movies themselves, they were gorgeous and I’m glad I was able to revisit them on 4k.

Collectors edition is worse than steel edition

Note: I give the actual movies in 4K themselves a 5/5*. The picture quality, the audio is just amazing. Unfortunately, this version gets 1 star because the collectors edition is a HUGE rip off. You get crappy cardboard box and a replica ring (probably worth $5). That is it... that is why this version costs $60 more... what a huge rip off. I preordered this so it was not know what contents came in the package. You probably understand how disappointed I was to buy the most expensive version and receive this. I wish I would have gotten the steel version ($30 cheaper) and sooo much better quality. Get these movies in 4K Blu-ray. Don’t get these versions in the collectors edition.

I havent opened it yet but I looked on YouTube on unboxing videos on this item and its just the ring and the regular 4k set. Sure it comes in a nice looking box and a nice pouch for the ring. Its also extremely lazy to place the 4k set in this set as the regular 4k . This set is 150 while the regular 4k is 90 bucks. If you dont mind wasting an extra 60 bucks on the ring (which you can buy on Amazon for 20 bucks) then go ahead and buy this. Im returning this set and purchasing the regular 4k set. Look up unboxing videos if you want to know what I mean

Reason giving two starts is because the box is crap. The ring is beautiful along with the chain. But the box itself looks and feels like a cheap art project from a disgruntled middle school child. The movies themselves are outstanding 10/10 wish I didn’t spend the extra and just got the steel books. With that being said these are reference demo movies to showcase your home theater.

This is a review for the collectors edition box and not the movies themselves. Overall very disappointing, I thought maybe we would get a nice leather book cover for the price but as others have noted it’s cheap plastic. The movies housed inside are the standard uhd set. Luckily I was able to get the steelbooks instead.

LOTR 4K Ultra - Stunning movies. Crappy packaging

The good: The movies themselves are fantastic and stunning in 4K Ultra. The bad: The "Collector's" packaging is a rip off! $150 for a flimsy cardboard box and a painted cheezy metal(?) ring. Oh, and did I say, NO special features of any kind. Just the movies. Save your money and buy the $90 4K Ultra version. It's a much better deal.

Just like everyone else on here, the main complaint is fact that you're over paying for a chintzy box with the original box set stuffed inside and a brass ring...Luckily I didn't open mine yet, but I will be returning. And I'll wait for the Steel Book set to become available again. Disappointing to say the least.

    Collector's Edition Is a Rip-Off

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I would only give one star for the Collector's Edition. The 4K film discs merit 5 stars. The "Collector's Edition" is $60 more than the regular edition. For that $60 you get a cardboard outer box and a poorly done metal ring that isn't even shiny, though the chain shines. A fabric bag is included to keep the One Ring in. When The Lord of the Rings' extended edition came out several years ago, Best Buy had a similar offer, but the cheap reproduction of the One Ring was a free gift for pre-ordering, and it was at least shiny. The steel box 4K edition of LOTR is $30 less than this collector's edition, $30 more than the regular edition. With the steel box edition you'll get beautiful cases, and you'll save $30 over the price of this "Collector's Edition". Review of the 4K discs: Wow! I couldn't believe the difference in picture quality and sound quality compared to the 1080p Blu-Rays. There is a vast improvement in the 4K discs for color, detail, and clarity in the picture and clarity and richness in the sound. I wasn't expecting to notice much of a difference, but I was pleasantly surprised. It would be hard to watch the 1080p version now. The 4K discs look so much brighter and clearer with better contrast than the 1080p discs. For reference, I use a Sony 4K HDR player with Dolby Atmos, a Samsung 82" 8K QLED television, and a Samsung 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar with satellite speakers (the soundbar and satellite speakers have up-firing speakers as well as front-firing speakers). The surround sound is richer, but the biggest difference between the 4K and 1080p discs is in the dialogue. The dialogue is much clearer in the 4K version. I used to have to turn up the center channel of my sound systems (I have two set-ups, one Klipsch and one Samsung Harman Kardon) for most movies, including LOTR, but with the 4K discs I leave the center channel at normal volume.

LOTR Collector's Edition Is Worth Your Money

    Posted .

don't let the negative ratings fool you, this set is still worth picking up. I would not say it's a rip off since based on the YouTube unboxing videos I've seen, the box doesn't look like it's made of cardboard, the ring is at least a nice addition, and I can easily imagine the steelbooks going up in price since they are always a target of scalpers. be aware of anyone who claims the Collector's Edition is a rip-off but claims the steelbook release isn't. the only value you're getting in these cases is the case, which of course the scalpers will go for which is why they're sold out in the first place. it's a scam! the Collector's Edition has all 3 films and the extended editions, they thankfully got the green filter issue fixed, and the box itself is at least a nice throw back to the original extended edition DVD cases with a novelty ring that would be just as fitting as the plastic statues they used to sell. trust me, stick to either the standard release and/or the Collector's Edition. those versions are worth your money and it will save you the stress & hassle of searching endlessly for those overhyped steelbook editions that gets sold out far too quickly & sold on eBay by sleazy scalpers for over inflated prices.

Not worth it, missing 3 disks and cheap packaging

Not a reflection of Best Buy since they just sell it, but we got it and just so disappointed. 1) Ours was missing the both two discs of The Two Towers Extended version and Disc 2 of The Return of the King Extended version. Major quality check error and the reason we will be returning. Completely unacceptable to be missing 1/3 of the movies we paid for. 2) The packaging was extremely flimsy and cheap. I would not consider this a "collectors" edition. I have the blue ray extend version of the trilogy and the packaging vastly superior to this version. The 4k version was cardboard and doesn't even look like a book up close. The ring replica is cool and surprisingly better than I expected, but it's not worth the $60 over the regular 4K version just for the ring and a bunch of useless/not nice looking cardboard.
