    Smart little Megaten rip-off

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the Shin Megami Tensei series has to be blushing when it looks upon The Lost Child. The only thing differentiating the two would be the smaller size of TLC, its more visual novel style of story delivery, and maybe eventually a cease-and-desist order for copyright infringement. In TLC, you play as someone literally called The Chosen One, and it's your job, accompanied by the prerequisite beautiful angel partner, to find and slay those that offend God. Or to find and slay God. It's pretty hazy on the details, but that's a positive; there's plenty of story here, even if 90% of it is delivered in visual novel text blocks, with the remaining 10% being handed to you via shockingly and delightfully well-made anime 2D cutscenes, reminiscent of some kind of old Sega CD game. Quite a wonderful change of pace. The game's battle system is the usual fire-beats-wood-beats-water kind of turn-based schlock, but it fits in the spirit of the game, as does the 3D first-person dungeon crawling you'll be doing for hours on end, filling in an empty map like a poor man's Etrian Odyssey. Fun for fans, tedious if you're not. Caveat emptor, there's a LOT of exploring and very little explanations along the way. Overall, you'll probably have fun with this little gem if you're reading this review at all. It's a very blunt and obvious Megaten ripoff without managing to rip off the customer. That's heaven sent indeed.

A mix between visual novel and dungeon crawler. Story is decent. Combat is a bit repetitive.

The Lost Child is a JRPG which play very similarly to games in the Shin Megami Tensei Persona series. Granted this title doesn't have the style and aesthetics that Persona has, in the end The Lost Child is still a fun and enjoyable dungeon crawler. If you've played Persona and are itching for new and exciting JRPG, definitely give The Lost Child on PS4 a try.

If you're looking for a sort of low-budget DRPG to pass the time, I'd say it's a good game for a sale but if you're looking for something meaty, you'll want to pass.
