This is not the kind of film that includes any jump scares, nor does it need them. When a mysterious rash of violence begins occurring in a small town, the local chief of police is overwhelmed by the events. He begins following the trail of evidence that points at an outsider, but he finds that the story is more complicated than he can believe. This film is really about paranoia, gullibility, and a community's innate trust or distrust of each other. This sounds more like a psychological thriller than a horror movie, but trust me, it qualifies as horror for plenty of good reasons. If you like the type of tense horror thriller that leaves you feeling disturbed at the end of the film, this is your kind of movie.

I am a fan of the horror genre, and it's been quite a while since actually felt terrified after watching a film. Many of the horror films that have been released in the past few years have been nothing but cliche that are filled with jump scares, and the over usage of this in many of Hollywood films have been watering down the genre. The Wailing is a Korean horror film with a psychological thriller and suspense in a level of its own. The movie is spoken in its native language (Korean), but the subtitles are excellent and easy to follow along. It's also one of those rare horror films where the ending is up to the viewer's interpretation. It is extremely chilling that will stay with you for days, and won't be able to stop thinking about it once it ends. This is an example of how horror films should be made. Definitely check it out if you're a fan of horror!

Written & Directed by Na Hong-jin with a masterful hand and a incredible cast of actors that is lead by the awesome Kwak Do-won. There are two amazing scenes in this 156 minute long movie (not a wasted moment in that long run time) that blew me away, one is an all out gory scene involving several men and a...thing, the other involves an encounter between a living person and a ghost that involves no violence...only words...that made the hairs on my arms and neck stand straight up. Watch alone, late at night, for the whole horrific effect.

I am a huge fan of Korean movies...I lived in Korea for 6 years. This movie grabbed my interest because it dealt with the occult and touched on some of the shamanistic elements of Korean culture. The movie was interesting but about 3/4 of the way through it, it started to lose my interest and the ending was "weak" (in my opinion).

I usually watch foreign horror movies as they are better than american horrors movies recently. This movie was better than what I was expecting. It has moments that are generally funny but, other moments when it is downright scary. It has a different flair. Watch it and you will like it, of course that is if you like watching foreign horror movies.

My personal favorite release of 2016. An absolutely breathtaking mash-up of genres that is a must-watch not just for fans of Korean cinema, but cinema in general. The release itself is fine. A couple of BTS shorts and decent picture quality. Comes with a slipcover. Just wish there were Korean subtitles.

Watch the movie without doing any research. Any research on the film will ruin the entire experience. Not so much a horror film, but very much a thriller. Will have you and the other viewers discussing the film for a days after.

If you follow the Korean wave of horror films you already know they make some of the best out there. Some may find it a bit long at well over two hours, but you are definitely getting a lot of bang for your buck! Some nice twists along the way. Not your typical "possession" film by any stretch.

Might be great if you're blindly following K-Horror in the same manner people will follow Anime for the past 15 years in this just above a cult style manner but if you're a more open person to all forms of art and aren't 'gasming for anything that makes you feel hip then this will fall short. The ideas and allegory are great actually but the execution feels like a sophomore effort where all of the worst qualities are exaggerated through each and every fleeting moment you spend watching it.
It's worth watching just to say you did but this could have been a lot better. Instead it feels more like something that could've been done in the 70's or 80's and you wouldn't have minded much if it had stayed there.

Not an American horror film

I've always said that if you want a good horror film, it needs to either be foreign (where most American made films steal their ideas anyways) or old. There are exceptions of course, but films like this prove that some people still know how to make great horror with original ideas.

Excellent and unpredictable with top notch acting, great believable characters and a very tight script complete with an ending that will leave you wanting to analyze the film to figure it all out.

This is by far the longest horror movie I've ever seen, but it is gripping throughout. Along with movies like 'Train to Busan', Asia continues to make great horror.

If you're even remotely interested in supernatural thrillers/ scary movies then this is a must watch. It has some comedic accents to it that make it that much better
