The Witch is a unique and interesting folktale...full of creepy imagery and haunting surprises! The cinematography is moody and sets the appropriate tone for the film. The film is not what you would expect. It subverts expectation and adds an extra level of ideology and mystery to the culture of witchery. It will have you thinking and talking about it for days!

The Witch is not what many expect it to be. Some were looking for just all horror but it’s also a drama about what the family is going through. Great performances by everyone, chilling score by Mark Korven, beautiful cinematography by Jarin Blascke (which looks great in 4K!), and just a direction and screenplay from Robert Eggers. Highly recommend this!

I found "The Witch" to be a generally unnerving film, and one which--though I would not place it in the pantheon of scariest flicks I've ever seen--had some moments that I'll not easily forget. The atmosphere Eggers creates alone is enough to wrench serious dread from scenes other directors would be otherwise unable to make even remarkable. The score, too, helps cull this dark tone and adds life to a film that can be borderline tedious. That being said, "The Witch" is not for everyone. It is strange, slow but steady, gruesome at points, and almost un-watchable at others. There are two sides to this film; one which I had hoped the director would stick to concerning the family and their struggle with religion and isolation; and another which plays as an undercurrent to most of the film and then takes charge in the end. Sadly, it is this second side which keeps me from giving the film a better score, and that ultimately hurts the film in the very final scene. Overall, I enjoyed "The Witch" and its originality. Eggers has achieved a film that, for all its low-budget and independent film background, feels richer and better made than many horror entries of late. Should you decide to see it, a word of caution: do not expect a fast-paced movie full of jump scares and creepy crawlies emerging left and right. As the opening credits remind the audience, this is a folktale. One that does not shy away from exploring the real dark places.

This was pretty ok, lol. It was not amazing, but do not watch late at night, in the dark, or when you are tire, as it is pretty slow.

This film was a bit of an odd one. It’s more of a slow burner type movie and relies on atmosphere to deliver tension and suspense somewhat successfully but not entirely, in my case. The ending was a bit strange and didn’t make much sense to me, although, as is the case with most things, it’s subjective. I would recommend you rent it and watch that way to save some money on this if you’re interested in seeing it.

One of the most underrated, horror films of last decade. Not for everyone but seriously amazing folk tale horror film.

Bought this movie as it was on sale and in Blu-Ray format. The film is very suspenseful and addresses how a family is effected by their belief in witchcraft. The director indicated in the special features that he used actual testimony of individuals of that period that addressed beliefs involving witches.

This is one of the few horror movies which genuinely creeped me out. It doesn't rely on shock or gotcha moments, just a slowly building tension and a real sense of isolation. Looks great in 4k, even though the cinematography is bleak and a bit colorless.
