Puritan Nightmare

The tagline for "The Witch" says "A New England Folktale". This is not just another throw away tag. That is the entire concept of this movie. It's a Puritan horror story. One that puts ambiguity (a la "the crucible") to rest by immediately welcoming the audience to a revised Puritan world where, yes, witches DO exist. The movie goes on to serve as a visual checklist of most every Puritan belief about witches, the devil, and their influence over individuals and society as a whole. Nearly every crisis faced by the family in this film can be sourced to those beliefs. The breakdown of the family, marriage, curses on crops/livestock, evil taking the form of animals ("familiars"), impure thoughts, loss of faith, and, of course, the Devil's desire to get his victims to ultimately "sign his book."

What a cool movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The 4K is nice, especially the audio details. I have to turn subtitles on for this though, have no idea what they’re saying half the time. Black Phillip.

Probably one of the best horror films I have seen in a long time! it had great acting, was original, and a very deep story about the love and trust of close family. Great horror film.

I love this movie, the cinematic artistry of it. I've always been impressed with the actors and how hard it must be to speak in that old New England dialect.
4K looks great.

The 4K is gorgeous. Subtle and slightly inconsistent in its sharpness - but outside of the occasionally soft shot this is Dolby Vision beauty. Plus the sound is PERFECT.

Robert Eggers is an astounding director and it shows in this slow burn horror film. It takes time to build but once yku get latched into the story, you are stuck!

I'm not sure exactly what I thought this movie was going to be necessarily but I didn't expect what it was, if that makes any sense. I guess I was thinking there would be more scares to it. This was more of a quasi-historical documentary kind of thing in so far as the director seemed to be taking it as this is how people of that time would have perceived things to have been. It was a bit long and drawn out in places. The end was a bit of a surprise, although you aren't really sure if it's suppose to be something that actually occurred or if this poor girl was just pushed beyond her mental limits. Definitely requires more that one viewing.

Such a slow build, which I love. The atmosphere and brooding darkness help realize how hopeless this time felt for the characters. Highly recommended.

I don't know if you can really even call this a movie ... it's more like a "feeling" that's surrounded by word pictures.
Please don't mistake me for some hipster fan fawning over this film ... it's honestly really not that good at all. What is good though are the voices, the muted tones and woolly fabrics, the voices, the droning minimalist soundtrack, and again, the voices.
Basically the last scene is dope, and you forget that pilgrims were ripped because they didn't have any food and they built all their own houses and stuff ... but also literally none of it makes any sense.

Maybe it was the expectations, maybe it was the promise of something fresh in a genre we only get one or two exceptional pieces in each year, but whichever way you cut it The Witch is something of a letdown. Still, as I walked out of the theater I couldn't help but to feel I'd just witnessed something I wasn't supposed to see. Writer/director Robert Eggers has adapted his story from old folklore and stories of supposed witchcraft in the New England region circa 1630 that have been passed down over generations and has even used a fair amount of dialogue from journals and other written accounts that still exist. While this is nothing short of fascinating and makes for an authentic-feeling atmosphere that unfortunately ends up being the films single greatest strength. The lurking woods that lay just outside the house of William, his wife Katherine and their five children including newborn Samuel stand as something of a no-man's land that is a constant reminder of just how little wiggle room there is for our characters. This is not only true of their physical space, but of their mindset as William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life and teach their children to do the same. We never look at the characters as ignorant or naive, but more in the light of them having a very narrow view of how to explain things and thus the film itself feels trapped in this little box just waiting to burst out with the supernatural sorcery that seems to lie just on the other side of those woods. Of course, some would argue that is what is so beautiful about the story as well-that it is restrained enough throughout thus making its final minute all the more haunting. The thing is, for that final minute to be something of a payoff the previous eighty-eight have to be enthralling enough for that final one to make a serious impact and in that regard, The Witch simply isn't consistent enough to warrant the gasp it so desperately yearns for.
