The thing about this film is that it is an amazing film. Wonderful in everyway from atmosphere to acting. My review is based on whether you need the 4K version or not. You do not need this. Go with the blu-Ray. The reason for this is that The Witch was filmed in 2K, so you’re seeing a digitally enhanced version of this, which adds nothing. The filter from the cinematographer already drains the color (purposefully) so the 4K doesn’t bring any of that out. There isn’t really any sharper detail even in 4K. Save your money, and go with the Blu-Ray.

Upon seeing this critics' favorite for the first time, I had to make do without subtitles! That was a mistake! With its 17th Century New England dialogue and dark scenes it was impossible to follow! Still intrigued with its story and macabre moods, I decided to give it another go on blu-ray. And I liked it! With the subtitles, it gives you a far better grasp of what's going on and takes you back to a time of superstition and horror! It deserves another shot!

This movie was described as the most terrifying movie by the king on horror. It really is.

Not a film for everyone as is the case in any A24 film however worth a watch simply for the tone. Don't expect a mind blowing twist ending or a high octane action flick, this is definitely for those looking for something different from the usual

    Top 10 Horror

I was blown away by this film. I love horror, but acknowledge that the genre tends to be infested by terrible movies. Even the best of them tend to do only a couple of things very well. Given that horror films get to play with all of our emotions, it always bothers me that the genre isn't filled with incredible films. There are some that transcend the genre and sit with the best of cinema—The Shining, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Thing, Alien—most only hold value as "horror films" rather than just as "films". "The Witch" can be immediately added to that short list of incredible films to come out of the horror genre. The quality of this film sits directly on the shoulders of a brand new director, Robert Eggars. His second film is set to be a remake of Nosferatu (a film I've dreamed of remaking myself!). I'm glad it is his capable hands, even if it means I'll never get to make my own version! For some fun, look up the parody-trailer of The Witch if it were to have been made by Wes Anderson ("Royal Tenenbaums", "The Grand Budapest Hotel").

This was a blind buy for me; I didn’t get around to seeing the film in the theater. I really enjoyed the movie. The look and feel of the film is great and keeps you guessing throughout. The transfer looks great. The film is not very colorful or saturated. The pallet is more muted and grey and really adds to the period look and scary mood of the events. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a well-made and thoughtful scary film.

A really good but not great film. It is as equally interesting as an anthropological look at what it must have been like to be an early puritan settler as it is a horror movie. Intellectual, intriguing, and even thought provoking - this is not a slasher movie. It it even moves with a graceful slowness. I plan to watch it a second time - like the Sixth Sense, once you know the ending you want to watch it from the new perspective.

In the year since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the 2015 Directing Award for newcomer Robert Eggers (who also scripted), I’ve been hearing how terrifying "The Witch" is. So I’ll just say this upfront: I didn't find it frightening. What I did find, however, was an incredibly atmospheric piece of filmmaking, inspired by numerous bits of New England folklore. Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke palpably evoke a sense of time and place in this 1630-set tale, centered around a devoutly Puritanical family of seven that has settled near the edge of a densely wooded forest, undeterred by the ominous, atonal string music that’s migrated in from "The Exorcist." “God has cursed this family,” Katherine (Kate Dickie) bellows to her tall, bearded husband, William (Ralph Ineson). He’ll have none of it, though, even after their infant son Samuel disappears while in the care of his teenaged sister Thomasin (newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy), apparently abducted by a naked, withered old hag who appears to have just stepped out of room 237’s bathtub in "The Shining"’s Overlook Hotel. Samuel “had sin in his heart,” William observes, oblivious to the “sin” that sits in his possibly bewitched daughter’s name. But I digress.
