Really good watch ..... but not perfect

Ever since the MotoActv came out in 2011 it has been the holy grail of all in one running watches. Did it have issues ... yes ... but how has nothing come close in 5 years. In comes the Tomtom Spark Cardio + Music promising to deliver on almost everything the MotoActv did and more. Does it beat the MotoActv, in my opinion yes, but there are still plenty of shortcomings with this device. Are the deal breakers? Not really. As an outdoor running watch this thing is fantastic, capture GPS signal in a hurry and does a really good job and mapping out my runs. As an indoor running watch it seem there needs to be some work done. The distances are off by at least 33% every time. It's easy enough to adjust but they definitely fall behind the quality of both the MotoActv and the current Garmin line ups. This is something that can be easily fixed with an update but looking at the Tomtom forums I would suspect a fix is not going to happen (same issue with the runner 1). How does the Tomtom compare to the MotoActv for music. Pretty good but a slight edge to the Moto here but only by the thinnest of margins. The biggest difference for me is that the Moto would work fine with headphones on either hand. The Tomtom needs to be on a specific hand or you will get drop outs when outdoors. Not a deal breaker but a little annoying. Control through the headphones and not the watch is one common complaint but I get it...there are not enough buttons to control running and music so I just use the headphones to control the music, it's easy enough. One big win for the Tomtom is the heart rate monitor. Wrist based heart rate is pretty accurate and seems to match closely to what I was getting with the strap or my jabra pulse headphones. Carrying one less item is a big win so the Tomtom rules here. Software......ugh.....Tomtom for lack of a better word sucks here. I switch over to the Tomtom have 300 runs I would like to add over the last couple years so that I can race against them and compare them on the tomtom website. No such luck. How can you not have an import feature makes me feel like I am starting over. The only thing that saves Tomtom here is the fact I can upload to many different sites (strava, nike, runkeeper, endomondo, etc). Also the website and app are pretty basic compared to my wife's Garmin 230 it just looks so much cooler. Is it better...I am not sure but it sure does look a look nicer. Another thing that I liked about the MotoActv was that at the end of the run you could see how you performed with each song. I don't get that break out with the Tomtom. It doesn't care what song I play or how fast I run when playing it. Acitivity tracking is pretty good here too....better than the motoactv but not as good as the Garmin again. For me I was trying to decide between the Garmin 235 and the Tomtom and ruled out the Garmin since it doesn't have music. My wife has the 230 so I know what I would be getting if I got the 235. In the end I decided to keep the Tomtom as it does everything I want and with any device you seem to have to make some sacrifices. With this watch vs a Garmin it comes down to 1 deciding factor. Do you want the music on the watch. The Garmin supplies more functionality and a much better web and app experience. It also provides more metrics and more features for working out. In the end the most important thing for me was tracking my runs and listening to music and that is what I got from the Tomtom

Great watch except for HR monitor

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this watch for both the simplicity and fetaures. Load music, up to 3GB which is about 400 songs, GPS so I wouldnt have to carry my phone during long runs, daily step count and sleep tracker, AND especially for the built in heart rate monitor. Having high hopes for this watch, i have been disappointed in the heart rate monitor. It takes forever to pick up a heart rate, sometimes up to 5 or 6 minutes, I'd say 5 out of 10 times its not picking up the correct HR. I am very aware of my HR and know that when I am pushing myself to 90% max HR, my actual HR is NOT 110 bpm. The battery drains fast, i charged it fully yesterday and ran the HR monitor and GPS during 2 of my workouts and already this morning it is at 50%. I am returning it and will be getting the TomTom Spark + Music w/o hr monitor. Fingers crossed!!

Good Watch, Horrible Software and Sync

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had never even looked at these before, but my wife knows that I love music and gadgets and have a new-found passion for getting in shape. She bought this for my birthday. Day one, I was thrilled. It is so cool and stylish. I loved the features, but it went downhill quickly from there. Adding Music- Although a little cumbersome I was willing to overlook, only adding music through playlists. (MP3Tag was great for creating compatible playlists for the TomTom) It paired to my Motorola earbuds and music playback was great. Music sounds great and I was able to skip and adjust volume through the headphones. A suggestion for those of us that despise iTunes, produce a simple drag and drop interface for adding music. With 3gb of memory it is absurd for the TomTom software to scan my entire music collection and use that as the default sync option. I was able to download the TomTom Sports App to my Android tablet and was able to pair it with my watch. It took a couple tries but it synced. Once paired it is supposed to sync automatically... NOT SO MUCH! Day two, I unpaired it tried to re-pair it and eventually it asked for a new PIN which I entered, and it attempted to re-sync new data. It said that it synced, but none of the new data was there. After struggling I went out and read the reviews on Google's Play store. I am not alone! My experience was like several of the reviewers there: "Still does not work Must re-pair every time and then loses connection whilst updating the quick gps. Awful. Really awful. Have yet to sync an activity with the latest version so it's actually getting worse! Just don't bother." "Bought a new Tomtom spark cardio + music. I have to uninstall and reinstall this app every time I want to sync it with my watch. Love my new watch, but such a hassle with this app. Only other way is to physically connect to my computer. App also doesn't sync properly with myfitnesspal as promised. Pretty big let down." There are many similar reviews. After fighting it for a couple hours, it is getting returned to Best Buy. The only reason this is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is that I do love the watch itself. The GPS works great, the HR monitor is very slick. The battery life seems adequate. Music playback is good. The PROBLEM ==> The interface and utilities are far from ready for public consumption!! Would I recommend this to a friend... Not if I want to keep them as a friend.

      Hi Tony,

Thank you for feedback and the review. I'm glad you enjoyed some features of the watch, but I'm sorry to read that you returned your Spark Cardio+Music. We are constantly working to improve the Bluetooth sync and the MySports app experience and I will pass along your feedback to the appropriate internal team. For the benefit of other customers, I would like to address the MyFitnessPal exporting issue. We recently migrated all the exporters to the MySports desktop application and it may be having issues if you haven't resynch'd online. You can do this by logging in to MySports-->selecting your name-->settings-->apps and exporting-->MyFitnessPal. TomTomInc.

Great watch for the beginning and seasoned athlete

TL;DR - Solid watch, athletically focused, great features, good accuracy on GPS, rugged I'm an Obstacle Racing Athlete. I train six days a week, and I run courses from 4-30+ miles with anywhere from 20-100+ obstacles in the course. This is one of the few products that is robust enough to survive several of those type of races, and easy/comfortable enough to wear as a daily driver. So far, I have taken mine though the Spartan Ultimate Team Competition, and seven more standard Spartan Races and a Conquer the Gauntlet, with no problems. The basic features of the watch can take care of the majority of people looking for a basic daily activity tracker. Pedometer for step count, basic sleep time tracking, estimated miles walked, active time and calories burned both for the day and week. When you get into athletics, this is where the watch really stands out from it's brethren in this price range. It has a built in HRM (Heart Rate Monitor) that, while not as accurate as a chest strap, does a very good job, provided you strap the watch snug about two inches above your wrist. Don't have it loose and bouncy otherwise any watch like this can't record properly. There is an option for a strap if you'd like that added accuracy you can buy from TomTom direct. Another accessory you can buy direct if cor cyclists. There is a bike package to measure your power output. Buy the kit and install yourself for that data. This watch is also waterproof. I've taken it through many swims in Spartan Races and other OCR series with no problems. My Girlfriend has hers in SALT WATER for about 2-3 hours a day, five days a week... with no problems. She's had hers for about seven months now. The GPS is accurate; I'd rate it a solid 7/10. I have a Suunto Ambit 2 that I set for 1 second pings for the most a accurate recording possible. On a six mile trail run, it was off by about 0.15mi. That's a pretty good margin of error. I'm thinking this watch uses 5ish second pings. Battery life is not bad either. I'm able to go about 3-4 days worth of training before I need to change the battery. Keep in mind, my training sessions are about 2 hours, so, your mileage may vary. Finally, the Bluetooth. It's great this watch has 3GB of storage for music. Pop on a bunch a sings via the application when plugged into your computer, then sync your headphone, and get to it.

    2 Weeks of wear

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have had this watch for 2 weeks now. The workouts that I have completed with this watch have been, weight training, mountain hiking, trail running, and street/track running. All in all the watch performed as advertised, accurate tracking of distance traveled. The heart rate monitor has its spikes and valleys but the overall curve it gives you is a fairly good representation of what your heart was doing. For me the battery has lasted for 4 days doing 4 workouts each of an hour or more. I also see the calorie counter to give you a good reference of what your are burning throughout the day including your workouts. One of the down sides of this watch is the app. It could be better but you can still track all your workouts and general daily steps. One of the savings graces of this app is that you can link it to myFitnessPal. So I would say that the app is the downside of this watch. Where I don't have much experience is in the step counter and don't really care to much for it. I have not swam or used the tread mill yet. I have not used the Bluetooth headphones yet either. So my pros would be: The GPS Run route tracking heart rate monitoring link with myFitnessPal Cons App style ( its not flashy or stands out) ; pretty boring looking

    Excellent Fitness/GPS Watch W/Music/Heart Rate

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This product is excellent as a fitness/gps watch. I was in the market for a new GPS watch with built-in Heart Rate but wanted to be able to have my work-out music on the device to eliminate the cords and the extra device (MP3 player or phone) when running/hiking/working out. I tried 2 other devices, the Moto 360 sport and the Samsung Gear fit before this one and although they did more stuff like interface with the phone/messages, this device is better suited to exercising. The screen is not fancy or color but is easily legible in the sun outside as opposed to the color screens. Once you get this device updated and spend some time getting to know it's functions, it does what you need to monitor.. runs, etc and heart rate. I personally find the controls ( 4 positions of buttons below the screen around the square GPS sensor) much better and easier (as opposed to a touch screen) when in an activity! You can use the TomTom program and sync your music (even different playlists for different activities) to the watch, download, analyze, and export activity info. The mobile app for the phone is not a great one but it does do the uploads of activities to look at, etc. You must hook to a PC to get all the functions and updates since the mobile app is limited. This device does not do notifications from your phone but if exercising and you want that function, better off just finding a way to carry the phone. I, personally, do not want the interruptions when exercising. It does do a daily monitor of activity if needed but there are other choices that will do that specifically that might be a better choice. Same as "smart watch" functions, there are others that might be better for that depending on your needs. Battery life is good and goes 4-5 days when used as a watch with occasional heart rate monitor operation. Battery life will go down, of course, if using GPS, playing music, and monitoring heart rate at the same time, but is still plenty for runs/workouts. But as a Fitness/Running/GPS/Heart rate/Music onboard watch, this is as good as it gets right now.
