Lacks advanced functionality I'm looking for

I purchased the TomTom Spark because I was excited at the prospect of only needing one device (two if you count an optional heart rate monitor strap, sold separately) when I work out instead of also needing to bring my phone or iPod along with me to supply music. This device accomplishes that, but ultimately, I ended up returning it because it lacks other functionality I need. I primarily use a heart rate monitor for metabolic training, and I need to be able to setup intervals within specific heart rate zones, i.e. a 3 minute interval in zone 1 and then a 2 minute interval in zone 2, repeating. This particular model doesn't come with the optical heart rate monitor built in, but it does work with an external Bluetooth heart rate monitor strap. While the TomTom Spark has an interval training mode and a zone training mode, they function completely independently of one another rather than together. You can either use the interval timer to do a 3 minute interval and then a 2 minute interval, repeating, without regards to heart rate zone, or you can zone train in one of five heart rate zones but not alternate between multiple zones based on time or distance. The interval timer also only allows for 2 timers that cycle and repeat with a warmup before and cool down after. It does not allow for fully customizeable intervals, i.e. two 2 minute intervals and then two 3 minute intervals, repeating). If TomTom releases a software update to integrate the interval and zone training modes, I'd most definitely repurchase this item. Aside from lacking the specific advanced functionality I was looking for, I think this is a pretty good product. Despite other reviews saying this watch is big, compared to other comparable products out on the market, the TomTom Spark is actually relatively small and light. I was pleasantly surprised by this given that it is the only heart rate monitor/GPS watch on the market (as far as I know) that can also store 3GBs of music. It also pairs nicely with other devices. I was able to connect my Jaybird Blueblood X headphones, heart rate monitor strap, and phone via Bluetooth with ease. It was able to find all of my devices quickly. I agree with other reviews that said this device is difficult to setup and that the interface isn't intuitive to navigate through. However, as someone who has experience with these types of devices, this problem is pretty much universal across brands and models of comparable devices and not specific to the TomTom Spark. My other complaint is that the TomTom desktop software and mobile app used to update this device are not one-to-one experiences. The desktop experience has much more functionality than the mobile app, and in general, the mobile app could use some work. If you're looking for and intermediate fitness device that is more than just an activity tracker but less than an advanced marathon or triathlon training device, this will probably work for you.

    Good GPS, so-so interface

Best reason for this watch is the good GPS functionality. It's pretty accurate and does what you want it to. Pairing the headphones to take advantage of the music can be a pain. It doesn't automatically pick up your headphones when you turn them on, presumably to not waste battery, but the pairing process can still be finicky. Navigating the interface is cumbersome but learnable. I wish the mobile app was more open to other apps to share your data. As it is, it's pretty closed and doesn't share your data with many apps. Still, if you want a want that plays music, has an above average GPS and doesn't need a phone to be accurate, this is probably the safest bet. Apple Watch 2 will do that but the GPS for long runs is supposedly not accurate at calculating pace which is a deal breaker for most runners.

Being able to add music and play it via Bluetooth is a nice feature. The display sticks up far enough that I am continuously bumping it- am surprised I have neither scratched or broken it yet. I was disappointed in the calories burned and also distance walked. It seemed to randomly pull these numbers in and NOWHERE I can find how these are calculated. The user manual is a joke and finding really helpful information is nonexistent.

      Hi there,

I'm sorry to read that the Spark Music has not entirely met your expectations. I'd like to address a few of your concerns. Regarding the calorie calculations - the calorie output are based on different sources of information; the type of sport, your gender, your weight and the intensity and duration of the exercise. For specific activities (running, swimming, cycling and/or treadmill) the calorie calculations are based on metabolic equivalent of task tables. To find more detailed information about the calories estimation on the watches please click here http://bit.ly/1LcKD0d. Regarding the distance walked, the data and information provided from the activity tracker is intended as a close estimation of your activity. The step count and distance are calculated based on your height and the movement of your arm. I hope this helps to improve your experience, however if you need any further assistance or have any remaining questions, do not hesitate to contact us via our direct line 866 486 6866 or the following page: http://bit.ly/Jn4Fjv. Our agents will be able to assist you. Thanks! TomTomInc.

Doesn't stay connected or connect at all to my moto x 2nd gen phone. Tried everything website suggests. It tracks well but really wanted it for swimming and haven't been able to use yet in the pool. Just wish more strap options and want to connect to phone. Ugh Is suggest to friends but with the knowledge that it doesn't work with all types

Watch was okay but the button was bulky and the software was not updating with the watch. It missed a few sessions. Went for a little easier navigation and better watch face. Was a little bulky.

This is the second tom tom watch I have used and love it. It's easy to learn how to use and effective for all the stats I need while running. Only thing I don't like is every time I recharge it I have to go back in on the mode setting and turn off the demo mode.

I dont do a lot of online reviews but have seen some for the spark that I just think are unfair. First off this is a great product for what it is. If you are expecting something a long the lines of a Garmin 920xt or fenix 3 then you will be disappointed. I chose to get the one with out the heart rate monitor as I prefer a strap for accuracy and if I have wrist based one I would prefer if reads my heart rate all day(like the vivosmart hr which I have also had) The spark accurately tracks steps and all day activity, plus I found the gps to lock on quite quick. I like that you can set your goals to something other than steps. It could be calories, time active, distance, and so on. Most trackers dont let you do this. As far as the app and the eco system on the computer it is okay. Is it behind garmin and polar?.... yes but it is good. It shows you all your metrics and breaks everything down. This can always be improved. I read a lot about people not being able to have a reliable connection to the app when using bluetooth. I had this problem at first too, but found you have to make sure the watch is "awake" once i figured this out it works every time. T o make your watch "awake" just press over to the left to view your stats for the day. As far as the music is concerned I found making and dropping playlists quite easy using wm player. Dont really understand what all the gripping is about here. Lastly just a couple things I really like. The fact you can switch the strap. Once tomtom comes out with more straps you can make this look like a completely different watch plus if one happens to get worn out over time you can just get another. The fit is very secure and very comfortable although I would not say for over night wear and sleep tracking(which is pretty poor anyway) So overall this is an excellent fitness tracker that trackers all your activity, you can pair external sensors with, and can play music with out your phone. I like polar's stuff better but the long term reliability keeps me from purchasing their watches.
