I then went to install the password protection software on it and it stopped working. I took it back to best buy (after putting 350 gigs worth of media on it) and they informed me that it was "fried". I don't think I could have done it by installing factory provided software. The associates were great and gave me a new one, minus the media that was on the first one. Oh well. If not for the employees, I would have given one star.

It's hard to know what was meant by the description of "fried" but I agree with your assessment that it couldn't have been caused by use of bundled software.
Another option for resolving this sort of problem is Toshiba's warranty replacement process, which can be initiated at http://acclaim.toshiba.com anytime during the warranty term.

That way I can finally recycle this old PC that I have been wanting to recycle for years. The instructions state I should be able to select the drive I want to back up and tell how but in reality the software that comes with this drive will not let me change the drive from the C drive. The C drive only has 30GB's of storage, (like I said, old PC). The D drive I want to also back up has over 150GB's I want to back up and I cannot select it. It took many hours to back up the C drive. I cannot imagine if I could select the D drive how long it would take to back up, maybe days. I selected the drive that the Toshiba was plugged into after it did back up the C drive to verify the data was on there and I cannot even see it. What the heck! I should be able to see my files. I only know it is "supposedly" there because the software says there is less storage available on the drive. I am supposed to trust the drive?! No way. This is not okay with me. I am going to remove my data and return this since I see by other people's comments this can be returned. I will not buy another Toshiba product like this. It is not user friendly in anyway.

Posted .Thank you for the review, MT254, and sorry to hear that you had trouble accessing files on your Canvio Slim II hard drive.
The drive is plug and play with Windows PCs so you can use it with any file management or backup software that you prefer, including those built into Windows and Mac OS.
If the files were backed up using the bundled NTI backup software then you would need to use that same software to see and restore those files. You just have to select "Show My Files". See the NTI manual link at support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=4005258 for more details.

Turned out the data on my hard drive was not retrievable. Totally Fried!!! From this point forward I'll be backing everything up in more than one place. It took a while, even with FIOS, to load the programming then it took hours to back up the computer. It then said there was not enough room to handle my movies and music on the drive. While I'll grant that I have a lot of information I'm surprised that a 1T drive cannot handle a 64GB computer.

Worked really well and the 3.0 speed made a difference that allowed me to complete the job and get back to work. No setup required for a basic backup although I may try the SW that it comes with at a later time.
