Posted .Thank you for the review, majix, but there seems to be some sort of misunderstanding about software.
This external USB drive is plug & play and requires no drivers for use with Windows and OS X computers. That said, it ships formatted to NTFS for Windows computers so if you want to use it exclusively with Macs then you'll need to use the OS X 'Disk Utility' program to reformat it.
If it was Windows PCs that you tried using it with it seems that you may have received a defective drive since this drive should immediately be recognized by and work with Windows PCs when connected. If you still have the drive and it doesn't work when connected to a Windows PC that works fine with other drives, I recommend returning it for replacement.
You also have the option of returning the drive directly to Toshiba by initiating the warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime during the warranty.

Greek Squad person suggested the Toshiba portable with larger storage space. I just plugged it in and followed the on-screen instructions and I was back in the backup business. Problem solved for not much $$.

I wonder if the drive is working fine for all sorts of other use cases. If so, can you clarify which application(s) you're using that have an "autosave" feature and how that feature is enabled or disabled in that software?
This drive is a plug-and-play device and should be ready for any storage use supported by your computer's operating system and applications moments after being connected to any modern PC. If you haven't already done so, I recommend connecting the Canvio to a different USB port on your computer, in case there's a previously unknown problem with the port to which it's currently connected. If that doesn't solve the problem, try connecting it to a different computer, in case there's a problem with all of the USB ports.
If there is a defect with the drive, you can initiate the warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime during its warranty period.

Tech support: difficult to find resource, understand tech, calls cut off. Item not working on laptop either, drive not recognized. Much time w/tech support..did not resolve issue. They dont wait w/you during process, tell you to call back if needed. Issue still not resolved. Called again..will replace item if mailed in at my expense. Will not buy Toshiba again.

This is a plug-and-play device so, as you expected, it normally is recognized and mounted without user intervention.
I would suggest connecting the drive to a different USB port, and if that doesn't solve the problem try connecting to a different computer. These steps will clarify if the problem is with a specific USB port, one particular computer, or the drive itself. If the problem follows the drive you may also want try using a different USB cable, if available.
If the drive proves to be defective, you can initiate the warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime within its 3-year warranty.

The problems we have encountered are too numerous to outline here. Worst of all is when we contacted Toshiba they pretty told us we were out of luck even when we were still under their warranty. Terrible experience
