    Excellent DVD Recorder

I don't know about these refurbished ones, but I am pleased with the Toshiba DVD Recorder that I purchased new from the Best Buy store. I've used it for about a year and a half without any problems. There are so many features that I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start with the pros: -Very easy to set up out of the box. -Excellent exterior style -Menus are easy to navigate -Quality of recording is stunning -Supports many different disc formats -It's very easy to set a scheduled recording. Choose from Mon-Fri, Everyday, Weekends, or one specific day of the week. --It starts up quickly. -Owner's handbook is very informative and useful. Now for the cons: -The remote is ugly and not intuitive. -Discs that are recorded on and erased frequently will eventually be no longer useable. Just get a big pack of DVD-R 'sor DVD-RW's. -This unit is useless if you plan to record HD programs. It does not have this capability and will record in standard definition. Overall I highly recommend this product. One more thing: This unit does not have a built in tuner, so you will need to have an external tuner like a digital converter box or a cable box.

*reasonable value-simple operation for a tech friendly person. i use dvd-r disks and they work well. they play on multiple devices for me. no complaints so far (two weeks of burning) I was initially intimated by all the different varieties of disks and the manual, but after using it I found it to be same difficulty as dvd player. I use it as for a burner. it copies off my dish dvr very easily. I have not tried the RW disks so I can not comment on using it as a dvdRW. overall -good value for my hard earned student money!!

I have had this over two weeks now and having very satisfactory results. I found the set up fairly easy. Although I could understand someone who has never had experience with a DVD or VHS recorder may have some confusion. I relied on my experience more then the instruction and had very little problems. My difficulties came from having so many other components in my entertainment system. There are two different recording modes you can choose from and those that are having problems playing finalized disc on other units may not be recording in a mode compatible with the other machines. There are also many different types of recording disc to choose from. Also some copyright protected programs only allow for recording and playing on one original device. Yes "recording" Duel Layer disc would be nice but then the cost would increase and recording setup would be more confusing for some. I have always had excellent quality and service from Toshiba products and Best Buy has given us good deals.

    Good Buy

First Unit was Dead-on-Arrival. Received 2nd unit very quickly after call to Customer Service. They reimbursed shipping as well as price due to defective status. Can't complain about that level of service. New Unit performs well and does a good job of capturing off air near HD programming from the cable box which was my purpose. Wish it had component level input instead of just composite/S-Video inputs so I could capture a little higher level of transmission but it seems everyone prefers transient DVR recording and DVD Burners are less and less available. For the money, this is a great purchase for me and I would not hesitate to buy another down the road if this one craps out if it remains available. Saved about 40% over a brand new unit. Very happy with this decision.

    Good Buy at Best Buy

Purchased on-line. I got a great deal even though it was refurbished it looked brand new to me. I was disappointed that it does not record on dual layer/double layer (DL) DVDs. The web site product description states it does but it does not. The manual does state that it does not. It will play DL DVDs though. I like the fact that you can record up to 8 hours on a 4.7 GB DVD. I like the fact that you can change the recording time after every recorded title. If you start off recording at XP speed you can stop the recording and change the speed to SP (or whatever) and record the next title at the new speed. You can add or delete Chapters after recording. You can give your titles a name, up to 30 characters. After recording you can delete a title and replace it with a new recording. The manual is very thorough but the font type is too small, I need a magnifying glass to read some parts. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

    So far, so good

This is my first standalone DVD recorder. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to hooking up equipment for dubbing. As long as you read the directions carefully and follow the diagrams, it's fairly painless to set up. My first few DVDs burned from my DVR went smoothly. Using Memorex DVD-R media, my programs burned with no errors and wasted discs. And the fact that I got the refurb model, makes this an even sweeter deal. I may just get another in case this burns out. I have a LOT of material to transfer to DVD.

    Nice so far

Only had it for less than a month but so far so good. Good picture and 1080p conversion/graphics upgrade is good enough! Controller and menus could be easier to use but you can figure it out w/o the manual. I do see that the system can overheat so this unit should only be used sparingly, especially because it's a refurb. Again so far so good. Wish it had an HDMI input for recording in HD. For the price I can't complain, let see if the unit lasts more that 5 years.

I have a tendency to not read instructions. I got this unit up and running in no time flat. Of course I did have to go back and read to know how to use it. I found setup extremly easy and shortly after I plugged it in I was recording. Instant record and timer record both work great. It will quickly format blank or RW discs. I would recommend this unit to everyone I know. I may even pick up a couple more to give as gifts. Cant beat the price or the quality you get for it.

Wow !! I had my doubts about buying this recorder, but after I set it up and started recording at the four hour speed i was amazed at the picture quality with the up conversion.... then I took the disk and put it in my four year old surround sound dvd player and was amazed that it records in souround sound with only two audio inputs, and the picture looks great too...It also plays discs that were recorded on my old dvd recorder without skipping and great picture quality...what I realy like about it is that it does not recognize all of the copy gaurds that cable is putting on its on demand service.. I was able to record the first eight chapters of ( The Pacific )... Great picture and in surround sound.... And it plays on all three of my dvd players and my computer...ALL YA" GOTTA DOO IS REMEMBER TO FINALIZE THE DICS...A lot of people forget that :( So buy it .... A little tricky to set up, But its one heck of a recorder for the buck....I may buy another one for a backup...

I have found the picture excellent. The setup is very difficult. I still haven't been able to make dcd's on the timer. I believe it will come to be as I learn the system. I am hopeful. Can't beat the price.

All I can say is that it worked great as soon as I hooked it up to my TV & a DTV converter box. Plays & records very well & the picture quality using the video & audio out jacks on the rear is great. I didn't know that a refurbished unit could be this good!! The remote control is big enough & laid out very well although I had to provide my own pair od AA batteries for it. Honestly I'd buy another one of these in a heartbeat if I ever needed to. I find the recorder & it's menues very easy to use. It does come with 2 manuals for reference if you need them.

This is a great little DVD-Recorder and a fanttastic deal for the money. It is simple to use and set up I was able to do both without even looking at the directions. Gives a nice on screen display of the %progress of disc loading and writing on the disc so you know how long your going to have to wait-grat for impatient people like myself. The finalizied discs play fine on other DVD players someone who said they don't must not have finalized them. What's most surprising of all is the exceptional audio quality of regular CD playback for such an inexpensive player=exeptonal clarity and detail. The high definition video upconverter is also quote good-both of these are better than an old muti hundered dollar Denon combo player(SACD DVD-Audio) I have at home.

This is an excellent value. While I note that it is noisy and slow to load, these are minor items. Once the DVD begins, there is no noise.

Door didnt work, Best Buy Says 30 day warnty

Easy to setup and record, first recording @ 4hr setting, picture quality OK would have liked a component video input. I Noticed a slip of paper in box says only a 30 day factory warranty. DVD Door would not open out of the box but after manually playing with it, it appeared to be off track. Its functioning now. Only had it 24 hrs still a little concerned.

The refurbished system has worked flawlessly which is about all I ask for in purchasing any electronic equipment whether new or not. This Toshiba system is easy to use and includes everything that is needed to set-up and use. Price was at least 50% of new & arrived quickly.

I have had a similar Toshiba(model #400) for about two years and it has been problem free. So far this one (model #420) has performed similarly. I'm not sure why so many of these wound up having to be refurbished, but, as others have mentioned, mine also looked brand new.

The DVR was at a good price, after having difficulty connecting it (it needs to be connected to the satellite box and not the TV) it worked fine. The only problem is that the DVDs that get recorded don't play on other DVD players.

I have never owned a DVD recorder before so everything was new. The instructions were good and I was up and recording quickly. I was anxious about a refirbished unit but so far no problems. For the price it is a good machine.
