This laptop is fast and able to handle processing to a very good degree (for a laptop and for an AMD A series). I primarily used this laptop for programming, multimedias (swapped out the drive with a bluray drive), and college stuff. When you get this laptop one thing to be aware of is that it will be slow because of 8.1. You MUST must must get rid of the bloatware. Also, it is best to immediately upgrade straight into Windows 10 as 8.1 with my experience has very poor performance. Once I upgraded and got rid of the useless programs/apps this thing starts up from sleep within seconds and also boots up within a few minutes. Performance after that (High Performance setting) is basically flawless. No stutters, freezing, etc. Only con I can think of: The screen is average. Yes, it is 1600x900 @ 720p, but do not expect amazing, vivid color or 1080p display. I repeat, It is average. Blacks are not true blacks. But I expected this when I saw the model and also knowing that this is a $400 laptop. Even so the specs and performance is a worthy investment. This is where I minus one star: the static black/grays. ******If you know you will want a screen with 1080p and true blacks is a must with vivid colors, this is probably not what you want. You will have to spend extra for that commodity on a laptop. But don't get me wrong, this screen is bright and mutch more than able to produce very clear images for streams like Hulu and Netflix. Maybe I'm spoiled by my Nexus 6. Now if you're worried about an 'AMD' processor, please don't be. The A8 6410 is comparable to a 5th Gen i3 or a 4th gen i5. Being that I am a desktop gamer with an intel setup I am very pleased with the performance and speed of this laptop.

My Dell is showing signs of age, and I wanted a larger screen laptop for just dvds, youtube, Netflix, and I wanted to try another mfg. I read all the input on this Toshiba model, and chose it as I could always return it if it fails. None of the stores in the area had one in stock, I bought it online at BestBuy.com, and I must say it was a great online experience. The site is easy to use, not a lot of extras to confuse a person on the purchase, I paid and had the laptop in a few days. This unit, for the price, is much more then I expected. Easy set up, and operation, not a lot of junk to wade through, and it really is a nice system. No the sound is not concert quality, but ear buds solve that. I think the screen resolution is amazing, as is this entire Toshiba system. If you need something for little cost, and good performance, this to me, is well worth the cost. I have been looking for another mfg. other then Dell, and I think Toshiba may be it.

this laptop is for my general purpose all around general use. every now and then i would get malware and windows defender would get rid of it for me. i then maxed out the memory 16gb. the video playback is outstanding and online videos. i then updated the amd drivers especially the graphics drivers. i got 20 to 25 percent better performance and graphics. i then updated to windows 10. that was a mistake. all my toshiba and amd updates were wiped out..windows 10 says its not compatible with their operating system... i then uninstalled windows 10 and i had to reinstall all my previeous updates. windows 10 is like an apple or macbook laptop that is not upgradeable.!!!!!!

If you are looking for a bare bones 17" laptop with no frills, then this may be the device for you. I had a few problems with it. I am accustomed to using a 1920x1080 display. The 1600x900 resolution just did not pop enough for me. Increasing the brightness to its fullest degree just did not seem to be bright enough. I had occasional problems where the touchpad would just quit working. When that happened, I would plug in an exterior mouse, remove that cable and then the touchpad would start working again. Also, this is the first time that I have ever tried an AMD processor. I came from a quad core i7. The unit that I purchased was extremely slow. Additionally, it would hang up at least once a day. In my eyes that is one time too many. I'm talking a 10 to 15 second hang up where it would just freeze and do nothing. Unacceptable. Lastly, (and this may be due to Windows) I had 5 critical errors within the first month of ownership. I found a work around but I should not have had to that. Between the low resolution, dull display, and freezing, I could still not justify paying even the sale price of $350.00. I am in the process of looking for something more to my liking and most likely it will be more expensive. HOPEFULLY YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL. Last thing, I am a long time Toshiba customer. My last laptop only lasted 4 years. Bad motherboard...completely frustrating to pay top dollar for an Intel quad core i7, 17" HD display 1920x1080, and BluRay and have everything fully functional except for the defective motherboard. It is making me rethink the Toshiba route altogether. Should have lasted at least another 2 years. Happy Hunting.

Nice Graphics... there were issues with the laptop

The graphics were good. I noticed that it was extremely slow. I realized that only 1.7 gigs was available for use to the system and the system uses 1.4 gigs just sitting there. It was not very happy. I took it in to BESTBUY and they seemed to realize like myself. I left it with them for 1 month and they gave it back to me with a new hard drive and the same problem with the memory. I showed them the problem again and they took it for a 2nd month and gave it back at the end of the 2nd month. 2 months without a PC when you are a programmer is frustrating. The machine move great now finally. The geek squad seems a bit geekless. I am not sure I would buy another product through BESTBUY. My best advice is if you get a Toshiba. Check its performance and memory upfront. If that seems good they are a great screaming machine. I am impressed not but up to this point I have been very bitter. Best Buy Corporate was very non-responsive to my requests. The store was a bit more responsive but their hands were very tied.

I just received my Toshiba laptop less than 8 hours ago. I set up my laptop as guided and installed a few applications. I restarted my laptop twice with the password I had created. While I was on a website, my laptop automatically shut down. It wasn't overheated, nor was I downloading anything at the time. Once I powered it back up, my password was no longer valid. It was the same one I had just created and used an hour prior. My laptop was telling me that I needed to have a USB flash drive to reset my password. (??) I called the legendary "geek squad" and after a half an hour, they couldn't get me into my laptop. I tried Microsoft's website, as instructed by the geek squad, and since I don't have an account created with Microsoft, I have a brand new laptop for less than 8 hours that I can't even access. I was told to take it to the store. The nearest store is 3 hours away, which is why I purchased it online. The Best Buy customer care office is now closed, but they will be receiving a call from me first thing in the morning as I will exchange this garbage for my money back. Buyer Beware!

If there are no other administrator level users created yet that can be used as alternate login accounts, I recommend performing a System Recovery. See the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article and its embedded video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 for detailed instructions on how to perform a Windows Reset or System Recovery.

I initially bought this laptop for school purpuses I wasn't expecting nothing fancy for the price but when I got the laptop I noticed at the bottom of the touchpad everytime I would either right click or left click there would be a noise. I don't know if it was a manufacture mistake or its a design flaw but it gets annoying after a while especially during the study time at night.. when everything is quiet

Price too good to be true, at $350 I wasn't expecting much but I certainly didn't expect a Laptop that kept restarting randomly every 15-30 minutes, this for a brand new laptop right out of the box..had it for 3 days and tried all the "recipes" ,nothing worked..did some web research and apparently its related to hardware and the power button being cheaply made and sticking to god knows what, now its going right back to best buy for a refund, I really had the best opinion about Toshiba but this thing just turned the table to a point I will NEVER buy from them again. What a waste of time., I was lucky I even managed to review without a reboot.

Thank you for the review, MaxT, and sorry to hear about the rebooting issue with your Satellite C75D-B7202.

I understand that you plan to return the unit, which would also be my recommendation, but at the same time I want to assure you that this problem is not typical of this unit and that a direct replacement would be likely to work just fine. My Google search turned up only one report of this model rebooting unexpectedly, which can be considered a statistical anomaly since we've sold many tens of thousands of these units.

If you do get a like-for-like replacement, I hope you'll update your review in a few weeks to let us know how you like a normally operating C75D unit.

    Sticking keys

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is my second Toshiba. I enjoy my other Toshiba, but some times it goes blank for an instant. Got the new Toshiba home, I made the mistake of updating to windows 10, took 6 hours. The computer ran slow on other down loads as well. I ran a malware detection program and it did have a bug already on it. The sales person told me that the keys light up like on my other Toshiba, that the store's light were too bright to see them in the store...no lights on the key board. The store person was mistaken on that sales feature. The big problem for me is that two keys stick. So I will take it back and shop for another computer, not sure what brand to try next.

Thank you for the review, Hubcap, and sorry to hear that your new Satellite C75D-B7202 had a couple of sticking keys.

That's unusual, of course, so I hope you'll consider replacing it with the same model or, if you need a backlit keyboard, consider one of the many other Toshiba models which do include that feature.

    Not an upgrade-friendly design

    Posted .

Toshiba has sacrificed ease of access for design on this model. Previous models & most other laptops have access panels for RAM, hard drive, and even fans needing only one or two screws removed. On this model, you have to remove about 16 screws plus the DVD frame screw. (That's the easy part, too!) Don't be shocked when nothing happens, there's about 40 fasteners around the edges & 3 or 4 tabs along the battery compartment. I HIGHLY recommend a plastic tab tool to do this or else the case will look like it was dragged on concrete (like mine!) At that point I inserted the 16GB DNY RAM kit BB recommended, & the sys wouldn't boot! Thinking the RAM was DOA because swapping one stock RAM the sys only read the stock RAM. BB exchanged, no problem, but had same issue. I used the Crucial tool & it couldn't recognize my model, nor was it listed on the model list (even Toshiba's!). I finally broke down & called the source, Toshiba, 3 futile calls later, I was about to give up when a chat pop box appeared & I quickly said my problem they said only Toshiba PC3L-12800 DDR3/DDR3L-1600MHz Computer Memory Module - 8GB Part Number: PA5104U-1M8G ($120) or Kingston® 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L Computer Memory Module Part Number: KTT-S3CL/8G ($71) I purchased the Kingston kits (2x8GB) through Amazon for $42 ea (arrives tomorrow).

I bought this computer for school I already had a Toshiba so I thought this would be just as good as my other, not!! My first day of taking it to school took about 20 min to load the wifi site, my class is only 1 1/2 hour long, then 2 days later it did an update, I couldn't even load my math program after that , this is the whole reason I bought the computer, Thank God for geek squad they had to set explorer back to factory settings I found out the update was to download games I didn't even want!!! The guy from geek squad set my computer for me to authorize the updates. I worked on the computer the rest of the day with no problems charged it for school the next day, surprising in class the computer wouldn't turn on, I came home plugged it in and still would not turn, took it back to best buy and to no avail it still would not turn on I am now the proud owner of a macbook air with no problems at all. All of this took place within 9 days all I can say is at least I was smart enough to buy it from best buy with GEEK SQUAD and great service that I was able to take it back with no box and get something that actually worked.

Some of you may remember the old Apple computers from the 80's and early 90's that only had green screens, used floppy disks, and were noisy and temper mental. This computer claims to have 6 gb of Ram, yet I swear that it runs slower than computers of almost 30 years ago. I don't know why, or what the heck is wrong with it, but it's a brand new laptop that crawls so slowly that it's practically useless. I just watched it take 28 minutes to shut itself down. 400 and something bucks down the drain. You do what you want, but I felt that I had to try and warn others from joining my misery. Back to my cheap 8 year old HP that has made it through Iraq and Afghanistan both, a multitude of viruses, dozens of drops, and still manages to get the job done...

Thank you for the review, Veritas, and sorry to hear about the apparent performance issue with your Toshiba Satellite C75D-B7202.

I wonder if Windows Update has been busy downloading & installing updates. That's typically the case with brand new systems, and if so it will tax initial performance until the updating process is completed.

If the problem persists after all pending Windows updates have been installed, please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for further help.
