    An exceptional noir.

Many consider Touch Of Evil to be a kind of swansong for noir's heyday and while I'd personally disagree, especially when you consider all of the exceptional neo-noirs out there, it is nevertheless one of the genre's best. Playing on the exceptional talents of its stars, Touch Of Evil digs deep into the human psyche in a very multi-faceted way to not only reveal humanity's dirty underbelly but what lurks within its churning gut as well. A film like this is fatalism at its best and comes highly recommended.

    First Class Orson Welles

Universal studios got lucky when Charlton Heston recommended Orson Welles to direct "Touch Of Evil". First class work. But, as usual with Welles work, no one seemed to understand what they had. There are at least 3 versions of this film. When Welles finished his directorial duties, he left the country to develop another film. Universal, puzzled by what was left behind, shot some new footage and pieced the whole thing together the best they could. When Welles returned, he was understandably upset by what he saw and wrote a 58 page memo about changes they should make. But it was too late. Universal released their 95 minute version. Years later, in the 70s, a 108 minute preview version was found and released. And much later, in the late 90s a producer and fan of the film convinced Universal to recut the film with available materials and using Welles 58 page memo as a guide. This version runs 111 minutes and is frequently considered the definitive version. All three are included here (via seamless branching) and all seem to be in excellent condition. Welles has taken what was a standard detective story and turned it into a dark noir classic. Excellent performances by the entire cast with Dennis Weaver as a bizarre standout and Welles himself donning grotesque makeup to turn himself into the (literal) heavy of the piece. Well worth the purchase.

The last Hollywood film from one of the greatest directors of all time, newly rescanned at4k and lovingly restored. It's hard to believe this was made in 1958 when you see it; I imagine it didn't look better when it first opened back then! This disc proves that the greatest strength of the 4k format lies in restoring old films and giving them the beauty they deserve; Orson Wells' first film; Citizen Kane is also available on 4k, a film many consider to be the best EVER made. Well, this one isn't far behind! I wholeheartedly recommend this disc! PS: I HATE when people say "Must-Own" or "Must-Buy" because everyone's taste is different. So: buy this if you love great classic films. I used the title to get your attention.

One of the greatest intros of all time. It starts with a bomb going off and another bang at the end, this time at the end of a gun. One of the better film noirs. You just have to get over Heston playing a Mexican. Only reason Orson Welles got the job was because of Heston. So, I can live with his hokey acting. The direction is amazing and the main reason you should watch.

If you are on the fence about whether or not to purchase this item, do it. I had the DVD version of this movie, and the Blu-Ray is exponentially better. My only complaint is that there is no 5.1 choice for sound, but I understand why it wasn't put on. I would just love to hear Mancini's beautiful soundtrack totally envelop my ears!

right up there with the 'Magnificent Amberson's is this classic from Welles. Heston miscast, but good acting, script, film-angles and editing makes for a classic under-the-wire movie from the late 50's.
