Works great for my outdoor Christmas lights, and backyard lights. The option for scheduling was easy to execute with the intuitive app.
My main concern was the water resistance, but we have had 3 different instances of heavy rain, and all great.. I'm confident on its durability.

The TP-Link - Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug is a nifty little device. It is exactly what it sounds like. An indoor/outdoor plug that is smart...
Set-up was simple. From unboxing, downloading and creating an account in the app, to operational was maybe 10 minutes. It came straight up and I had it on my network no problem.
Physically, it's pretty simple. One plug goes into the wall and two seperate plugs you can plug devices into. You can control each plug (plugs one and two) seperately. The app is simple, lite and clean. In the app, you can power each plug on/off, monitor run-time for today, past 7 days and past 30 days.
Additionally, you can create a custom schedule or sunrise / sunset with option to adjust to hours or minutes before and / or after. You can also create different schedules on different days or every day.
If you prefer, you can also set timers in hour and minute increments for turning device on and off.
Another cool feature is the "Away" setting. This setting allows the device to randomly turned on and off mimicking people are home.
You can also easily share access to others to us the device. Very cool.
On a final operational note, I was easily able to integrate it into my Goolgle Home environment so it's operational from where I go to run the rest of Smart Home. Nice bonus.
The only place this item is lacking is in the chord leangth. It's just a few inches long. Had it been 2, 3 or 4 feet, this is an easy 5 star, but that short chord leaves real-world use a little lacking.
End of the day, this is a great choice from a well known and trusted company. If you have the need, great choice!!

Great Plug for Outdoor decor

Technology is just amazing!! I'm so happy with my Tapo Smart Wi-Fi outdoor plug. The plug is of a good size, not bulky or heavy. Doesn’t require a lot of work to set up. I went ahead and downloaded the app which prompted a quick account set up that took a few seconds to set up. The app is very straightforward and easy to use which I love. It automatically connects to my Alexa device. This feature is very cool since I don’t have to use the app to control the plug. The plug comes with 2 outlets that can be controlled separately. This is a great device to have if you have outdoor decor/lights that need to be shut off once in a while or on a daily basis. This Tapo smart plug lets you set up schedules and timers. Works well if you are away from home and need to shut off outdoor decor.
The plug has a silicone outlet cover so when not in use they can be protected while being outside. This Tapo smart plug will be very useful for my Christmas decorations. It’s very annoying having to go outside in the dark and in the cold to shut off the lights but not anymore because all of that can be handled from my phone. Definitely recommend this product if you have several outdoor decor that require hookups to electricity, this smart plug will give you the peace of mind knowing everything is turned off at the scheduled time.

Very nice outdoor smart plug. It comes in a small package, it has a small cable, its not intended to be an extension/extender or something like that. Its intended to plug to any outdoor plugs you may have and make them "smart". Its very sturdy and the cable is thick too. The plug itself has a couple of flaps that protect the female plugs from the elements. On top there are a couple of illuminated buttons to enable/disable each plug. Setting it up was very easy, you just download their phone app, plug it in and add the device and follow up the steps. If you wish to use the smart features, you must make sure you have WIFI coverage. It uses 2.4 ghz since its the band that has more reach.
I really like their app, its very intuitive and you can set many settings. In example, you can setup schedules, where you can have the plug turn on or off at set times you would like. Of course you can turn it on and off manually via the app. You can also setup timers. All these will help you keep control of your electric devices and save power. Its IP65 weatherproof rated, but like with any electric devices, I would still try to keep it dry, you never now.
Highly recommend it if you want to turn on/off your outdoor devices into smart ones!

Incompatible with Kasa iPhone app

This is incompatible with the Kasa iPhone app:
* Kasa and Tapo are two different brands under Tp-Link
* Since Kasa and Tapo products are both made by TP-Link, they are exactly the same
* Somebody at TP-Link (probably a brand manager) decided to fork the brand the Kasa brand into two different brands: Kasa and Tapo
* Even though they're the same products, they are not compatible with each other
* The brand manager at TP link should be fired for making such a consumer-unfriendly decision

Hello ElectronicsBuff,
While both Kasa and Tapo are owned by TP-Link, they are separate brands. That said they can work together, just not in the Kasa app. You will need to switch over to the Tapo app. You can use the same TP-Link ID login. Then, link your Kasa device to the app so you can control your Tapo and Kasa devices from a single app.

TP-Link - Tapo T25 Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug with Matter
This device provides 2 outlets which are individually controlled from a smart speaker or an app such as Alexa Echo speaker, from the Alexa app, or the TP-Link app on a smart device.
It is also rated for outdoor use and is IP-65 (per TP-Link specs) weatherproof against rain moisture and snow winter for use outdoors for items such as lights, outdoor fountains, holiday lights, and decorative displays, which need electric power control.
Using this smart double switch allows a user to program on and off times for such devices. Of course, it also supports voice control once it is integrated into your existing smart home system. One can also use it by setting it to turn on any lights (or other devices) at sunset since the smart system adjusts for the different sunset times throughout the year.
It is rated compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings protocols.
The TP-Link Tapo smart app is easy to download and install on the Google play store, in my case, for my Android devices. Even easier, the app is easily installed on a smartphone by scanning the QR code on the box to initiate the download and install. Once installed just create a free account with a password and then link it to your existing smart device account, in my case the Alexa app. The Tapo app also allows full control and more options for scheduling on / off and routines.
One thing mentioned in the TP-Link disclaimer is that presently Amazon is working to make Matter devices fully compatible with the Alexa echo system. In that regard, only 1 outlet appears and is controlled from current Alexa devices but a software fix to the Alexa system will be implemented in the third quarter (Oct-Dec) of 2023.
This TP25 is compatible with the Matter smart home standard, which ensures interoperability with other Matter-certified devices. One thing touted is that “All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline.” I did not test that since this is the only “matter” capable smart device I have in my system at this time.
TP-Link specs that the outlet contains dual wifi antennas and has a 300 foot range from a router. I found it responded for all commands at approximately 90 feet from our router which is where it was plugged in to an outdoor outlet. The device is rated up to 1800 watts of power capacity and is touted as being able to handle high watt devices such as outdoor furnaces and swimming pool pumps.
I like it and fully recommend it to anyone who wants some outdoor switch portable outlets.

Bricked plugs after factory reset

Soooo frustrated. Google Home requires you to factory reset all your devices after changing networks. After factory resetting all these devices several times they don’t work at all. They all show as “offline”. TP Link documentation is abhorrent and unhelpful. So my plugs are basically bricked?

Hi,
Thank you for your review. If you reset all of your Tapo Smart Plugs to accommodate a network change for your Google Home, please also ensure you have removed the plugs from the Tapo app, then re-add them using the new network credentials. You can remove the devices from the Tapo app by pressing and holding the device "card" in the "All Devices" screen, then tap the red minus symbol in the top-right corner of the device card. You will then be prompted to verify whether you are sure you want to remove the device. Please tap "Remove" if you are sure you want to remove it.
Once removed, you can return to the All Devices menu, tap the plus (+) icon in the top-right, and re-add the device(s) to your new network.
If you would like assistance with any of these steps, please reach out to our support team using any of the resources included with the product, or from our official website, and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.
Thank you, TP-Link Support

Perfect for Holiday Lights

I recently bought two TP-Link smart cameras and I've had a TP-Link mesh router system for over a year. In that time, I've come to really like what they do so this smart plug was pretty much a no-brainer. The app is dead simple to use and has been updated recently. As such, I'm able to access my cameras and this plug right on the main page of the app, and can turn things on/off there with one simple tap. You can set routines and schedules, and all of it works well, is easy to use, and lives within an app that gets very frequent updates (at least on Apple devices). I wanted to start my review with this fact, because I know for certain it is not the case with many of TP-Links competitors. I've also had good experience with their customer service when one of my mesh points started behaving a little oddly. They sent me a whole new system within days and I even ended up with an additional mesh point. Needless to say, that makes me feel good about any concerns I might have with this smart plug here.
So as for this device itself, well it's pretty straightforward. Do you use any sort of holiday decorations that have to be plugged in? If so, buy this plug. We've been using an old fashioned outlet timer for years and that thing has always been a colossal pain in the butt to figure out and get right. No more. You plug the TP-Link into an outlet (which needs to be the GFCI variety, btw), plug your holiday lights/decorations into the TP-Link, set your on/off schedule in the app and voila. You never have to think about it again.
The plug itself has a grippy rubbery feel that should hold up to various weather conditions well. Obviously, if you live in a place where it routinely gets freezing cold temperatures and stays there, then I would look at the fine print to see if this will work for you. They do suggest that for best waterproofing practices you keep the plug about a foot off the ground and pointed down. There are rubber flaps that can seal off an unused outlet pretty well, but you still wouldn't want to just let water pour down in there. The box comes with a mounting clip and screws if you want/need to pin it to the wall in order to keep it the recommended height off the ground. There are buttons to turn off the individual outlets manually, as well as status light indicators.
One thing - and this is true for all their Wi-Fi products that I have seen - they really recommend that the devices connect to a dedicated 2.4GHz network. I've set up my router to make the guest network a 2.4GHz connection and use that for the cameras and this plug and have had no connectivity issues. But that can be a little tricky if you're not familiar with how to do this or you don't have a dual band router. (I think most are though these days?) My guess is it would still work fine on the 5GHz network, but maybe you'd see some drops or congestion from time to time. Not terribly sure though. Go the 2.4 route if you can.
Other than that, this is a dead easy recommend. Really like this brand and this plug.

Good quality outdoor smart plug with Matter

The TP-Link Tapo Smart Plug with Matter is a great outdoor addition to a smart home for its ease of use and reliability.
The first thing you notice about this smart plug is the good build quality with rounded edges and a light but noticeable weight. It has two independent outlets each protected by a weather proof cover to protect against water intrusion. TP-Link recommends placing it at least 12 inches from the ground and face down to reduce water incursion. A clamp with a screw is provided to anchor the plug against a wall.
With Matter, the set-up is so simple and straightforward. I own several smart TP-Link devices without Matter, including an outdoor smart plug, that require the use of the proprietary Kasa app to fully function, but not this one; the first time I connected it, my Google Home app detected it through Bluetooth, I scanned the QR code at the back of the plug and after less than a minute it was ready for use. You can also set it up through the Tapo app but I did not try that method.
From the Home app, I was able to create automated routines and I have it connected to my outdoor patio lights that I have programmed the plug to automatically turn on at sunset and to turn off at sunrise. I can also control it independently through the app or with voice commands.
After a couple of weeks of use, I’m very happy with it. It has been reliable and mostly responsive. I encountered some lags in executing some voice commands which I attribute more to my Wi–Fi signal variations than anything else. The first day I installed it, it rained heavily all night long and more the next day but it worked without a hitch.
I would recommend the TP-Link Tapo Smart Outdoor plug to anyone looking for a reliable and easy to use outdoor power device that will let you control your outdoor lighting or other equipment. It offers quality and reliability at an affordable price.

Perfect plug for outdside decorations

I have had Halloween decorations that require electricity on the lawn. Before getting this plug, I would have to go outside to plug and unplug them. The worst would be lying in bed almost asleep and realizing I had not unplugged the decorations. I'd have to get up, put on my robe and slippers and go out to turn them off.
This plug has two outlets that let you set schedules! You can have them scheduled the same or differently.
You can also turn it on and off from the app. There have been days when it has gotten windy and the inflatables have started bouncing around. I could just look out the window, grab my phone, open the app and click the plug and they turn off!
The plug and cord are very short so they hang right near the outlet.
This will make all my holiday inflatables much easier to maintain. I don't have to worry about when I plug them in and when I turn them off. I can program the plug and it is handled for me!
This would also work well with a pool pump allowing you to run it on a schedule.
I will find uses for this all year round!

Where Has This Been All My Life!?

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I have always bypassed the Wi-Fi plugs thinking that the regular timer ones are just as good. Boy was I wrong! After a few years and several seasons of dealing with a regular timer, I am crying that I have struggled this long unnecessarily.
So, backstory, I’ve had backyard string lights for a couple of years because it gets very dark in the back of our house. The outdoor outlet they’re connected to is high up, underneath the roof. After a while of plugging them in manually, I bought a timer. This was a relief, except that throughout the season as the sunset time changes, I still had to go and manually change the time periodically dealing with the struggle of climbing up to reach the timer. So as busy mom life goes, sometimes they turn on too early or too late until I have a chance to get up there.
Enter the Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug, the device that made me cry tears of joy. Not only can I simply change the time through an app on my phone, but I can also set it to turn on at sunset, and it automatically knows when sunset is throughout the year. Even better, I can go on the app and just press the on/off button for each string light, and it turns on or off immediately. This is one less thing for this busy mom to check off her long list of to-dos.
The quality of the plug feels great and durable. It has waterproof flap covers so that if any of the plugs are not being used, they can be sealed and protected from water and dust. Be sure to press the cover tight to make sure it’s snapped in place securely; I thought it wasn’t working at first until I did so. Each plug can be controlled individually and set to different schedules according to needs. Provided in the box is a clamp and screw to secure the plug to the wall facing downward. This is also to protect it from water seeping in. Adding to peace of mind, it is made with flame-retardant material for added safety.
This plug requires a Wi-Fi connection and can be controlled through various forms as it is Matter-Certified. The main option is by using TP-Link’s Tapo app. With this app, the connection is seamless, and the controls trigger immediate action with no lag time. With Alexa, connection is easy and seamless as well, and there is about a second of lag time. It is compatible with Apple Home as well, but I do not have a smart hub, so I cannot comment on this. Other options are Google Home and SmartThings. Set-up is super easy, and the device has long-range Wi-Fi coverage.
I wholeheartedly will be recommending this plug to anyone looking to connect anything outside that requires a schedule or an easy on-off switch. This device puts you one step forward to an easy-to-manage smart home and the peace of mind of having control at your fingertips.

Great full featured smart plug

This is an awesome product. Up until now, I've used outdoor plugs similar to this but they only come with a remote that lets you turn them on or off. The Tapo TP-Link Smart Plug takes that to the next level by being WiFi controlled. That means I can turn the outlets on or off while I'm away from home.
This is a well designed smart outlet. One of my biggest complaints with remote outlets is the quasi-waterproof aspect of them. Most having questionable waterproof abilities. So to start with, this smart plug has an IP65 rating. Which means dust tight and protection from water jets from any direction. That's one of the biggest and most underrated qualities of this smart plug. You don't have to worry about dust or water getting inside if it's out in the weather. And as an additional bonus, the TP-Link is UL Listed, it meets the nationally recognized standards for sustainability and safety. You won't find either of these ratings on a huge majority of products available at a certain huge warehouse mail order company (you know who I mean). You also get a 2-year warranty with it, so that's another bonus.
So it's water resistant, it's dust resistant and it's electrically safe. The AC pigtail is about 10” long and features a right angle plug. The cord itself is beefy yet flexible and is solidly attached to the outlet housing. They even include a wall anchor, screw and cord holder to secure it. The outlet housing itself is made of plastic and seems very solid. There are power buttons to turn on each outlet manually along with small LED indicators that let you know when either of the outlets is turned on. The outlets themselves are downward facing and have rubber covers on them that help to protect against dust and water entering through an unused outlet. They're held in place only by one side of the rubber covers. I would have liked to have seen them put a bit more effort into these covers as they don't really stay in place very well. It would have been nice if they actually snapped into place so that they stayed seated better.
The electrical specs on the entire plug are good. 125VAC at 60Hz, 15A maximum load. They even state you can turn on up to a ½ HP motor. It also has 802.11 b/g/n wireless ability as well as Bluetooth. You can use Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings or IFTTT to control the plugs as well as downloading and using the app itself. The app is very straight forward and easy to set up and use. It can also be used for other Tapo products like cameras, vacuums, etc.. This is the only product I have from them so when I open the app it shows me my two smart plugs. I can turn them on individually from the app or I can set timers for them or set a schedule for them to follow, or even select the Away mode that will turn the outlets on randomly while I'm away from home. There are also automation shortcuts in the app you can set up to turn on devices at dusk, turn off all your devices with a single button press, etc..
This will be a great help with Christmas lights, and I finally don't have to remember to turn them on (and more importantly) off anymore. I plan to get another one for the back of my house that will be great for turning on the fountains automatically in the summer and Christmas lights in the winder. Really nice and well designed product from Tapo!

TP25 is a SMART choice!

Very useful little device! I have outdoor lights that I wanted to turn into a smart device and TP Link 25 did just that! Set up was super easy. You have to down load the app (not another app right…but it integrates easily into your smart home and disappears really…you can use the app or just use your preferred assistant) and create an account. Once the account was set up… I just plugged it in, opened the app and hit the add device icon and it found it and done! Super fast and easy! You can use it as a remote with the app to turn on lamps or decorations or deck lights, turn it on manually with the button on the unit or integrate with Siri, Google or Alexa. I had my plug linked to my Google home app in a few minutes and can just tell Google to turn on or off my back deck lights! Fast & responsive and could not be any easier!!! Note once you have the TP 25 set up in the app…go to your Google home and add device and link your TAPO app to your google account. Then you can change the plug name from the standard plug 1 to “back deck lights” and that’s all you have to say to the Google Assistant. Really cool.
The unit itself is well built and the outlet cover is secure and seals up nice to keep the elements out. Its rated IPX5 for water and 6 for dust. It should hold up to any outdoor weather we come across as long as its not just setting on the ground flat. The plugs need to facing down to keep water out. Just cant submerge it or have it sitting in a puddle. They state it must be mounted 1 foot from the ground. Mine is on a covered deck so I fudged a little and have it about 5 inches above the floor.
Overall – It is well built, has an easy app that easily integrated into my home eco system and has made my life easier and better!!!! Can’t ask for much else from a handy little smart plug!!! Can’t go wrong with this one!!

I picked this wifi outlet up in preparation for the Christmas season. Over the last few years I've had several instances where I wish I would have been able to shut my inflatables or lights off due to rapid wind changes, but I was away from the house, and they take some damage. This will help stop some of this I hope. I have a tp-link account from other products, so when I saw this at it's current price point, I figured I'd give it a try. Easy set up. Download the app (which I had), log into account, add a device (model tp 25 in the usa) and follow the instructions. In less than 5 minutes it was on the wifi network and updated firmware. I tested this with a string of lights and a fan and was able to comfortably turn them on and off from my couch inside. You control each of the outlets separately, which is nice. I've seen a few that are all plugs on or all off. They took the time to do these separate. The only quirk I have with this is my house's outdoor outlets are embedded into the wall per local code. (See photos) That means with the bent end on this, if I wanted to directly plug this into my outlet, i have to use the top plug and block the lower plug, losing it's utility. I know this design prevent the weight of the unit from pulling on the wire a bit better and to lay flatter on a wall, but I wish they offered a straight plug. I am used to running a short extension cord out of the box first because of this, and then plugging in items. This will habe to be done that way. Overall, no faults I can see in this product in and of itself, it's made well. 5 of 5 stars for ease of set up and it does what it says. I do reccomend this plug.

This is my first smart home product from TP-Link, though I’ve owned many from other brands over the years. I like that the Tapo TP25 Smart WiFi Outdoor Plug has two individually controlled outlets whose power can be turned on and off using either the physical buttons or remotely via a smartphone app, when connected to your home WiFi network. The device is compact, has a 10-inch durable power cord, and comes with a mounting clip to ensure that the outlets are installed facing down to prevent water ingress. There are also two rubber doors to cover the outlets for additional protection against the elements, though I found that they aren’t super secure and dislodge easily.
The plug is rated to handle a total of 1800 Watts and outputs up to 15 Amps. It is IP65 waterproof so long as the covers are in place or a plug is installed in the outlets. It connects wirelessly using Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n but is only compatible with 2.4 GHz networks. The WiFi range of the unit isn't great though, and I had to move one of my mesh nodes to the opposite side of the wall where the TP25 is plugged in on the outside of the home in order for it to establish a good WiFi connection.
The plug advertises its compatibility with Matter, a universal IoT standard that allows it to connect to various smarthome assistants like Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings. However, I found its implementation to be somewhat disappointing. Apps like SmartThings and Google Home indicated that I needed to have a separate Matter hub in order to set up the plug; when adding to Alexa as a Matter device, I was only able to get one of the two outlets to appear. Even then, Alexa lacked control functionality beyond on and off, and I was unable to natively set up timers or schedules for the plug, though I was able to execute voice commands and create routines for the one outlet that was added.
I had a better experience using TP-Link’s Tapo app, although I had to reset the device first by pressing and holding one of the buttons for 10 seconds in order to setup it up from scratch. In the Tapo app, you’ll need to register for an account and/or sign in, but adding the device was quick and straightforward. Once setup, I could toggle each outlet on and off from my phone and create timers or repeating schedules including automatic sunrise and sunset triggers with or without an offset. The app also shows you daily, weekly, and monthly accumulated runtime for the past 30 days (though not power consumption) and lets you to share the device with other TP-Link users. I was able to link Alexa to my TP-Link account using the Tapo skill in order to enable voice commands that worked for both outlets.
Overall, the outdoor plug is able to perform as a smart wireless timer for my outdoor lights with a number of different trigger options. It has physical on/off buttons for each outlet and can be controlled remotely via the Tapo (or Kasa) app and integrates with Alexa fine if using the skill to link your accounts in order to utilize voice commands. I didn’t have much luck getting it the device setup with Matter, however, so if that’s important to you, it’s something to consider.

The biggest thing with any smart device is how well the “smart” part works and on that front TP-Link has it figured out. The app and device work flawlessly together which is the biggest part of the smart experience. The setup process is as easy as plugging the device in, opening the app and choosing which device you’re adding. The process takes about 5 mins at the most and is definitely as easy as it gets and is much easier than other smart plug brands I’ve used. And once you’re connected to the device, setting up a schedule couldn’t be easier. You set the time you want it turn on and off and bam…it’s done. I know that seems like a no brainer, but like I said, I have two other smart brands that are a complete pain to set up schedules for the plug/lights to turn on and off.
In use, I like the fact the plugs can be controlled independently and can have different schedules for each outlet. I’m so use to using the non smart outdoor plugs that you turn a dial and pull the little pins up to set a schedule this plug makes the experience so much better. Having a smart device is nice if it makes life easier and I’m happy to say the TP-Link Tapo smart outdoor plug does.
