This is great movie about real events. What a guy!

Louis Zamperini's story of survival was robbed of all feeling and emotion in this screen portrayal. Jolie has cast a very flat, laconic, and unconvincing crew of young Abercrombie models who lack the depth of seasoned actors who would have otherwise convinced us that there was actual pain and suffering throughout this. After a month afloat on a raft the three men's hair was well-groomed and one even had a goatee (are there razors in the survival kit?). I felt like I was watching Casper Van Dien in Starship Troopers; if you have seen this movie you will know exactly what I am taking about. Read the book - it will give you the emotion and satisfaction you are entitled to from this survival story.

Great movie and true story but it was a little long

If you're not familiar with the story of Louis Zamperini, then this is a movie you will not want to miss. No one could ever make up such a terrific and harrowing story. Mr. Zamperini went through a tremendous ordeal, ultimately surviving the war and changing his life forever. The movie is entertaining and very well acted, but it simply does not compare to the book. Although the book is incredibly well written and seems to take you to the site of Zamperini's ordeals and suffering, the movie just doesn't tell the story as well. Again, it is very well acted and if you don't know the story, you will be amazed at the tale. See the movie first then read the book! Mr. Zamperini is a true American hero and everyone should know of his experiences and his strength of character. I give it four stars only because it doesn't compare to the book

In this case, the movie is nowhere near as good as the book. The trials that the main character, Louis Zamperini suffered at the hands of the angry, shark infested sea, the Japanese prison camp and then his shattered life upon survivng and returning to the US was torture enough in story form. To endure the torture with sound and images was just too much to endure in the accurate but brutal film version. The movie was well directed and acted but was just not necessary after reading the extraordinarily well told tale in Laura Hillenbrand's bestselling book. So, if yoi did not read the book, the movie is a decent representation of the story but suffers in the ending without the story of redemption that concludes the book. I guess I am saying "great book, decent movie."

The story of Louie Zamperini is literally unbelievable. A kid in trouble, an Olympic runner, a WWII fighter, lost at sea, Japanese POW camp - and he survives it all. The most amazing part is his life transformation after he gets back to the states. But the movie completely skips that. I understand that movies have to leave things out (I highly recommend the book) but to leave out the big transformation kind of misses the point. Louie returns home, marries, fails at restarting his running career, and becomes an alcoholic. But he's converted after attending a Billy Graham crusade and that's what enables him to continue his life and even forgive his former captors.

There is so much more described in the book that cannot be compressed into a 2-hour movie. However, watch the included Special Features before viewing the movie. They are exceptionally complete and provide much insight and detailed background to the events shown in the movie, and the lives of the real persons portrayed. A tough movie to watch, but a true tribute to the generation that fought and died for our country. The cinematography, picture and sound quality, are also top-notch. Highly recommended!

Angelina Jolie and the producers of this movie have done a terrific job assembling a team that have put together a great movie in just about every way - with excellent cinematography, set production, and a very good audio & video presentation. The problem for me was that the movie just doesn't meet the emotional peak in the story, script or acting that would put it over the top to be placed in the category of an epic film. If only the movie could have touched me in the same way as many portions of the bonus features and behind the scenes footage did. This is what really makes this disc something special. You will do yourself a huge misjustice by not watching the bonus features.

We had seen this at the Theatre. It was one that I walked away from, knowing I would added to my collection, when released on DVD. (I was fortunate enough to to get it on Sale at Best Buy, plus use a $5 off coupon). The Louie Zamperini story being true makes it even more special. The fact that this man became a Christian and went back to seek out & meet his tormentors later in life (& forgive them) is an amazing act of courage & faith. Only his main tormentor refused to meet him. Great movie!

This movie is a true story about a USA Olympian and athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini who survived in a raft for 47 days after his bomber was downed in World War II, then was sent to a series of prisoner of war camps where he survived brutal treatment at the hands of one Japanese corporal, Mutsuhiro "Bird" Watanabe. This is a World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. Buy the movie!
