This game has a light story thats purely used as a vehicle to push gameplay forward but the hook is so good! The game is part srpg with real-time elements in play. There’s a demo on the Nintendo eshop which I would recommend because while I do love this game it’s not for everyone. It reminds me of fire emblem in that there are multiple classes with clear counters, a promotion system for character classes, and the battles are automated once they start. Go give this one a try!

This game won't be for everyone. But it's 100% for me. It offers an extremely unique take on strategy RPG gameplay that isn't your traditional turn-based SRPG combat or RTS but something in between. Prior to battle, you assemble your units (including a mix of class types from melee soldiers and tanky warriors to fleet-footed thieves and light/dark mages) and give them "gambits" which essentially pre-select the commands they'll follow in battle under various conditions (like the gambit system from Final Fantasy XII but even bigger and more intricate). The combination of units, equipment, and moves goes so far above & beyond traditional "rock, paper, scissors" style gameplay RPGs employ for strengths & weaknesses (aka fire beats ice or magic beats armor) that it can be genuinely challenging to compose the most optimal units for battles - but it's so, so satisfying when you crack the code. Marry that with Vanillaware's standout aesthetic style and this game is a veritable feast for RPG fans. That said, if you do not like spending time in menus or managing RPG mechanics and stats and classes, then this game will not be for you. At least for now, if you're on the fence, most platforms are still offering a demo with progress that carries over so it's worth a try if you're interested! This one will be a gem in JRPG "hidden gems" lists for years to come.

Great game with lots of depth. Deceptive complex. The fact that you can’t control units once battle starts seemed like a turn off to me originally, but once I started playing the strategy and tactics of the game really began to shine. Addictive and fun. Highly recommended to any strategy game fan. Graphics and performance on the Switch are great as well.

I recently had the opportunity to play this game on the Nintendo Switch, and I must say, it was an enjoyable experience! The graphics are vibrant and engaging, creating an immersive environment that draws you into the gameplay. The controls are intuitive, making it easy to pick up and start playing right away. One feature I particularly appreciated was the quick pick-up process at the locker. It streamlined my playing experience, allowing me to jump back into the action without any frustrating delays. This thoughtful design made it easy to stay focused and fully enjoy the game.

Unicorn Overlord is one of the best strategy games I've played in years. Solid story, good voice acting, wide array of unit types, and the game play is rock solid. I already want a sequel and would love the see the gameplay adapted to a sci-fi story as well.

Nice NOT fire emblem clone. For $20 it was a steal IMO Had a ton of fun with the characters and a nice mix of feeling like FE7/FE8 on the GBA and having a new mix. Definitely cool overworld map and being able to travel and such in between levels. Not beaten it yet but like 20 hours in and still playing. Some nice fun synergy combos you can do and a lot of ways to customize your units. being able to build your own units is cool too. Uhh what else. Idk I just enjoy it a lot, but I'm a big turn based rpg and fire emblem fan in general. Only thing is none of the character really stick out much, but idk idc about that.

The distinct look of Vanillaware’s games (the Flash-style animation and overly detailed art) bring a spark of uniqueness to a somewhat standard tactical RPG affair. But if you’ve player one of their games before, you know exactly what you are getting into: a top-class RPG that seems weirdly focused on 2D renderings of food. Easy to understand mechanics mixed with somewhat convoluted story, Unicorn Overlord is yet another weirdly fun adventure that only Vanillaware can pull off.

Kidding, of course, but this game gives Fire Emblem a run for its money. The tactics can get pretty deep and instead of focusing on cute characters and stuoid gimmicks like modern FE, this game is all about strategy and believable conflict/characters. I played through the demo all the way, and enjoyed it enough that when my game copy arrived I started over just so I could play the first 6 hours again. I hope this becomes a series and sticks around for a long time, because Unicorn Overlord really fills the niche that Fire Mblem has been failing to for a long time.
