Fastest USB Backup Drive I Have Owned!

OVERALL: I consider this newly released WD Easystore 1TB USB SSD model a very fast and economical backup solution. Over the years I have used an assortment of USB 2.0 & 3.0 thumb/flash drives and/or MicroSD cards for backing up my data. Currently 82 GB of files, downloads, family pictures & videos, music, etc. (60,873 Files, 5,076 Folders) that I have accumulated over the past 20+ years. Backing up was a fairly time-consuming process until now. What used to take me a long 2.75 hours, now takes me a very short 14 minutes. Although this Easystore is larger than any of my thumb drives, it is very light, and at 1TB can hold a few rolling backups from my computer. Sweet!
ALLOCATION SIZE: Out of the box this SSD was exFAT formatted with a file allocation size of 1024 kilobytes. At that allocation size, my 82.1GB of data actually used 123GB of space on this drive, and that is way too much wasted space for my intended use. So, I reformatted the SSD with an allocation size of 128kb. The same 82.1GB of data took up a more respectable 86GB vs. the original 123GB of space. I expected there would be some reduction in speed after reformatting, but there was not enough to have any concerns (about 1%).
IN THE BOX: Included with the SSD is a connection cable, Mac & Windows software (apps on the drive), and a manual that is undeniably too small to read. Note that if you do not “Install the WD Software.exe” app, it caused repeated File Explorer pop ups showing the files and waiting for me to install the Windows app. Anyway, when I formatted the SSD with the reduced allocation size, and then moved the two apps back to the SSD, the irritating pop-ups have ceased.
MINOR CONCERNS: I do wish this SSD had a USB-C versus the USB-A connection to the PC. But I am not overly concerned with the sort of weird USB 3.0 Micro B drive connector. Also, it would be nice to have some sort of drive use indicator like a small LED. Nevertheless, those are very minor concerns that I can easily live with and not give them another thought.
FIRMWARE: A while back I had upgraded my G14 Laptop with a WD SN850X 1TB NVMe and I am running the WD Dashboard application. The WD Dashboard actually shows this Easystore drive as a SanDisk SSD Plus. Now the WD Dashboard app displays the easystore SSD current Firmware Version 6085. But the WD Dashboard (Tools) will not allow you to check to update the firmware: “Firmware update is not available for this device”. And that seems very odd to me for a Western Digital branded storage device.
BOTTOM LINE: Considering the economy pricing for 1TB storage, the WD brand with 2-Year warranty, along with the speed of this drive, I believe it earned a solid 4-Star Rating for my intended backup use.

I should start by mentioning that I have several WD external drives, some of them are previous versions of this product and the truth is that they continue to work flawlessly. This version WD - Easystore 1TB External USB 3.0 Portable Drive has a lower weight than its predecessors, something that I personally liked a lot because sometimes I need to carry with me not only this kind of memories but more devices, and the last thing I need is more weight.
In the box comes the device 1TB drive, a USB-A to Micro-B (USB 3.0) cable and documentation. The drive comes formatted to work with Windows or macOS so it can be plugged right out of the box and started to be used. The drive includes the WD software ready to install although in my case it was practically impossible to make any modifications or configuration successfully, it seems that the software needs a lot of work, I had to uninstall the programs as they do not work.
Regarding the performance I could realize that being a SSD memory the speed is very good, I have been able to transfer large files such as 4k videos in minutes. Because this storage device is fast and easy to connect, I also use it to download PC games to free up space on my pc, so when I want to play those games I just connect the drive to the pc and I can play without any problem, everything flows as it should.
Being a 1TB external memory is easy to carry with you and has enough space for everyday use, regardless of the files you want to save, it is a memory that serves quite well as a back up, certainly a device that fulfills its purpose satisfactorily, it has been a pleasant experience at least for me.
Regarding connectivity I consider that having usb-c would be ideal, however the same name of the product indicates that the connection is via USB 3.0, likewise although the software leaves much to be desired, fortunately it is not necessary to use this device, this makes the rating is still 5 stars because with respect to what it promises vs. performance, meets outstandingly, the truth is there is no way to go wrong with this product.
In conclusion, this WD 1TB Portable Drive is a really good memory to storage photos, video or music or simply backup your pc files, it is fast and a light weight device, I can highly recommended.

A portable hard drive with 1TB of storage
This Western Digital hard drive is a perfect addition for my needs. It's got a 1TB storage capacity, it's super portable when needed, and it comes with a USB-A data cable with 5Gbps ability. I love the lightweight of this WD portable hard drive since I can easily take it on the go in my computer bag. This 1TB is an affordable option for anyone using a Windows or Mac device. Expand and offload content from your main computer to this portable hard drive. Very useful for so many occasions. I have been using it most for freeing up space on my laptop hard drive by transferring the gigabytes of family photos, content creator videos, and personal files. The hard drive works efficiently and effortlessly. The WD software that comes with this allows for easy usage because of easy to use auto backup software.
Small size, compact for portability, lightweight for easy pocket access, and highly useful to increase storage space. This weighs about .33 pounds and is great to keep nearby your computer for storage and backup needs.

Great Value for Portable Backup and Storage

These hard drives are essential for users that want to keep backups of all their favorite media and data. WD keeps making these smaller and lighter with each new design/update. They often are capable of holding more data than most newer computer's hard drives. The Easystore portable drive is very easy to use. Just plug in via USB and click and drag. The transfer is quick and seems to have improved over other older models from WD. The USB interface is compatible with other devices that support 2.0 and 3.0 technologies and makes it easy to view your files on any device that supports the hard drive. There is even internal software that allows you to configure, manage and diagnose your hard drive as needed. With the most portable design and most affordable price yet, the WD - Easystore external hard drive is a real winner for those that need ample space for storing documents, photos, music, and more. At this price point, it is reasonable to own several of these to back up a large number of large data files to keep for quite some time. No need to fret over getting rid of any of your favorite files to save space. Highly recommended.

WD Easystore 1TB 3.0 SSD ~ Just What I Needed!

Received the Western Digital 3.0 USB SSD Easystore 1TB external drive and was pleased to give it a try. I needed it to store numerous files and especially photos that were taking up a lot of room on my Windows 11 computer. Plugged it into my USB port with the included cable and my computer found it right away. Definitely Plug and Play and no formatting was needed. One thing to note is you'll have to be careful not to lose the provided cable as it's a Micro-B to USB-A and most folks don't have these just lying about like the regular USB or USB-C. It's rather short in length but for me not an issue. There is a power input but no cable provided for that, although I don't feel it's needed.
When I proceeded to move my files it worked very swiftly and I had no errors or glitches. Was pleased about that aspect for sure. It's also so easy to transport as it's small and lightweight. The outer case is plastic and it seems to get somewhat warm when in action, but not enough to consider it dangerous at all. Stays slightly warm when plugged in and not in use so at least you know it's connected properly as there is no light.
All in all I find nothing negative to say about this SSD. WD makes some fine external drives as I have older ones still in use and running great. It worked as it should right from the start and is just what I needed to keep all those files off my C drive. Very happy with it and definitely recommend!

Good, Fast, Portable 1TB Drive

I can never have enough external storage drives. I transfer a lot of video files and various other document types so having a USB 3.0 connection is very important to me. This WD Easystore 1TB drive is a great choice for general storage of large files. I really appreciate that it’s already formatted as exFat to work with both Mac OS and Windows systems because I do work between both quite often.
I tested transferring a batch of 15GB from the WD Easystore to a Crucial SSD (and vice versa) between both Mac and Windows PC which gave very similar results:
WD Easystore to Crucial SSD - transferred 15GB in 3 minutes
Crucial SSD to WD Easystore - transferred 15GB in 1 minute
On Windows, I noticed that I was getting speeds of up to 324 MB/s
The WD Easystore drive is certainly lightweight and very portable. It’s not as small as the 1TB SSDs that I have, but I still think it’s an acceptable size that doesn’t take up too much space on my desk or in my backpack.
Overall, I am happy to add this storage device to my drive collection because it’s fast enough for what I need and it’s very lightweight & portable. I would have liked a USB-C cable instead of or in addition to the USB-A cable, but I have external hubs to accommodate a USB-A connection where I wouldn’t normally have one (like on a Macbook Pro).

This is going to be a quick review, primarily because I have had several of these over the years from Western Digital and they just work. This new 1TB Easy store is so light and small, it’s easily tuckable into a small pocket on my laptop back.
This thing is super fast, I was trying to get a screen shot of a directory that I was backing up that was about 230MB and I couldn’t even get the camera focused and it was done. This is exactly what I wanted in a 1TB small external drive I could travel with.
I did not install the included software. On the drive it actually has software for both Mac and PC. I didn’t install either yet because I am going to use on both types of devices and I have some specific large directories that I am moving between several sources and then as a backup to a cloud drive. I have used some of the WD backup software before and it’s all solid software. After I finish these projects, I will probably install it on the windows laptop.
Well built as always, they are getting smaller, lighter and faster and for me, I will keep going with Western Digital Easy store because they keep going for me! I would absolutely recommend this to anyone.

My first impression is how light this portable drive is. The case is completely made of plastic. It does have a certain cheap feel to it, so I would worry about withstanding harsh treatment. The matte finish does not attract smudges or fingerprints. There are no LED or RGB lights. I personally like to see an activity light. The USB-A cable is OK. I would’ve liked a slightly longer one as I will primarily use it for my Mac Mini, which is very limited in space. The drive is plug-and-play, and the computer will immediately recognize it. The cable is rated at 5Gbps, and based on several transfers and testing, it sustained that for the most part. I did not notice any real drops or hiccups and not once did it disconnect. In case you would like to go further, there is some back-up software from WD which is welcome, albeit not really necessary.
In the end, this is a decent offering from WD. It is light enough to carry in a pocket, and the performance is solid. It is already a very good value as is, and if you can get it on special a must-buy.

Solid Sata III external drive

This is a nice, compact external drive from Western Digital that while not a top end performer works well for small backups.
Arriving in basic packaging, I'm glad to see more manufacturers not vacuum sealing their small electronics in plastic basically requiring destroying the packaging to get to your item.
Inside is the drive itself, the USB-A cable and a few pamphlets.
The drive is incredibly light and small and stylish.
Connecting the USB-A cable to the drive, one thing I noticed and I do not like is the proprietary connector Western Digital continues to use on the cable connector. Instead of using a USB-A or even a USB-C port on their external drive, it has an odd two position connector. This means the drive itself is incompatible with off the shelf USB cables and you are forced to use this cable with the drive.
Once connected and then plugged into your computer, the drive is immediately recognized. On the drive itself is software for both PC and Mac if you want to use it. I opted to archive this software elsewhere and reformat the drive.
Speed wise, it is a Sata III level drive meaning top rated speeds are 550mb/sec read and write. This is not a high speed drive like modern USB 3.2 devices. This is shown in the CrystalDiskMark results showing solid Sata III level speeds even plugged into a USB 3.2 port.
With Sata III speeds and 1TB of storage along with a good price, this makes for an excellent small to medium file storage or transfer device but for external professional work it is too slow but then again those drives do cost more.

I like the WD drives, I have several of them. the perks for using WD drives are - there ease of use and with affordable price and all the software for the WD drive is free for life. whether it is NTFS drive for Mac or AFPS drive for windows PC and their backup software.
The drive is very lightweight, to me it looks like a SSD not the HDD because of the weight and it does not feel that there is any moving part inside. It comes with 2 software installers (one for windows and one for MAC). I used this on MacBook Pro 14 inch.
First thing first - I connected the drive using the thunderbolt dock using USB A cable provided (I wish it should have USB C cable). Every one is moving to USB C and I am not sure why WD decided to go for USB A connector.
This comes as ExFat reformatted so can be used on both Mac and Windows systems out of the box.
Installed the WD Discovery software and also installed the WD drive utilities and WD security. These two are really great apps for WD as they provide encryption (Password) and formatting and drive management tools. For some reason, WD discovery recognize the disk but the other two apps seems to not recognize the drive and I every time there is a message that "ATTACH A SUPPORTED WD DRIVE".
I tried plugging in and restarting my Mac. Still not recognized by the security and drive utilities apps.
Decided to reformat the drive as AFPS for Mac, check again but both the apps do not recognize the drive.
I am not sure whether this particular drive does not support these apps, which I feel very unlikely as my 10 year old drive still support these functionality.
Other than that the functionality if great. Speed is super fast, I did a whole MacBook backup and it took about 5-7 min to complete, while I was writing this review.
Overall it is a decent drive with great write speed for everyday task. Just remember to not store any private data because the drive does not provide any password protection with WD softwares. Value for money.

First thing I noticed when picking up the box was how light it was. Unpacking the box you find the USB 3.0 cable and the drive. When I picked up the drive out of the packaging I honestly thought it was an empty case. The drive is incredibly light weight and fairly small form factor.
It's been a few years since I got a new external HDD and those I have, even the 1TB capacity, are much heavier than this easystore drive. There are no lights on the drive to indicate activity or power status. When I plugged it in I really did think it was an empty case and no drive inside. Once plugged in the drive popped up on my PC as active. Clicking on the drive and going to properties, the drive has 931 GB of free space and there are Wester Digital applications ore-installed for both PC and Mac if you want to use those. I never do that and just use the drive freely for storage of personal files, pictures and downloads.
The drive transfers at a speedy rate and I have had no issues playing anything off the drive installed when connected to my home PC or laptop. This is a nice and simple drive for many uses.

This Western Digital Easystore 1TB External USB3.0 Portable Drive has a lot of advantages. First, it is silent. As a solid state drive, it make no noise. It is very light weight and no vibrations when operating. It has built in software that is available when connecting. The PC version was very easy to use. My mac took some time to figure out. The case of the drive is made with plastic and is about the size of a traditional hard drive only thinner. It connects to a computer via a dated USB A. My computers only have USB C. The other end of the cable that connects to the to the drive is a port I’m not familiar with. The problem with it is it’s not east to swap out with a USB C cable and you end up using an adapter. This may seem minor but because it requires an adapter, this it the reason it is 4 stars. Otherwise, this device is perfect. If you use an older USB A connection, this will be perfect. I have used Western Digital drives for years and will continue to due to the high quality.
