Excellent drive, with some OS-related limitations

The WD My Book 4 TB is a fast and capable storage solution for backups, "archive" files, and other data. I plan to use it to store my Adobe Light Room archives and working copies. Western Digital is, by common agreement, the most reliable and powerful brand of hard drive on the market to day, and this device continues their tradition of delivering the best. Although I'm giving a rating of five stars, I'd like to point out a limitation of this drive that's due to operating systems rather than the drive itself. If you plan to use this drive only with Windows, then you can allocate all 4 TB as a single primary partition. If, however, you want to be able to use the drive with Windows and with OS X, then you'll have to use 2 partitions. The reason is that the Windows NTFS file system supports 4 TB partitions, but the multi-platform exFAT file system that works with both Windows and OS X only supports 2 TB. If you use exFat to use the drive with both OSes, then you'll have to split the drive into two partitions. You do have the choice of making the two partitions equal sizes. I have a shelf full of theses drives from 1TB to 8TB and I swear by them. I do not leave them plugged in except when loading or unloading them. No need to run them hours on end for no reason. I would buy them over and over again.

Very compatible with Xbox One. Backed up several years of game history and still had 2 TB left over for future use. This was easy to connect with my Xbox One and was less money than the actual Ebox external hard drive. Great product and will purchase another when I need it.

Bought this on sale for MSRP + $25 Best Buy gift card. Amazing purchase at that price point and very happy with the hard drive. Using it to expand the memory of the Xbox One as I am completely overloaded with games and need a minimum of 1.5 TB of storage. Super easy to setup and makes the launch consoles smaller amount of memory totally fine for the foreseeable future.

I saw that this unit was on sale (substantial) and it is similar to the WD My Book, but is an exclusive BB brand and has a different warranty period than the My Book. I bought it to help consolidate a bunch of 1 TB drives I use. It works as expected, I don't personally use the bundled software. My only issue is that the desktop-based ones require power and don't always eject from Windows 10, so I typically have to shut down my PC before disconnecting. Not really an issue since I use this for occasional full backups.

I have about 3gb worth of movies/TV series I've ripped throughout the years, as well as a magnificent collection of music, and I wanted a backup hard drive to store these on in case one of the multiple portable hard drives I use end up crashing. So far, this drive has been steady, speedy, and extremely easy to operate. The settings allow me to shut it down when not being directly utilized, which is a key ingredient in keeping the life of the internal motor in good shape. I prefer WD over other companies anyway (Seagate in particular has sold me a lot of junk drives in the past), so when this went on sale I jumped on it. Thus far, I have no regrets & I would recommend this drive to anyone who is looking for great media storage.

I purchased this drive during the black friday deals. For the price I paid it was a good deal. The backup software is a little slow and finicky. Even when running in the background it still gives you an error message. It does not compress the data to save space. Luckily there are other free backup software that do a better job. I chose the 3.5 in drive which requires external power to work. Even if compared to a 4 tb internal drive if purchase it at a sale you still get a good deal

The reason I like this drive so much is I picked it up for a great price, in fact I bought a pair - one for me and another for a friend. I have set up some backup jobs on it and so far it is reliable and doesn't have any quirks. Time will tell in terms of reliability, but it's been great so far with no issues!

This was my second backup device that was a WD storage unit, using it as a second backup for my 2TB easyStore drive and I love it as much as my other one. Have had good experience with WD, never had failures, unlike my Toshiba 1 TB which died on me completely and I had to pay to get it fixed.

Bought this for additional storage for my xbox one S. Works great. Load times have actually been greatly reduced compared to the stock drive. Installation was simple. Unboxed it. Plug it in and the xbox formated it in seconds. Super basic. The unit fits perfect in our entertainment center.

Great Quality...Looks well made... Best Suited for systems with USB 3.0.Auto Powers on when Desktop/Laptop powers up...Auto Powers Down when system shuts down. Larger than Usual WD External cases but to me it is one of the last well made external cases by WD...Inside is a WD RED 3.5" Drive

So far so good. I had purchased a new Mac and needed to back up the old one to move to a new machine. This was a good, affordable option. I had been very wary of WD products in the past, but have had excellent experiences with the stuff in the last 5 years. I'd recommend this to anyone.

This was a replacement for a older 500 GB WD external hard drive. I gained four times the storage for back up of files. This drive was easy to set up and works fine. Finally I have an external drive to back up all of my files with room for the future.

The WD external hard drive 4 TB its a good storage, compatible with usb ports 3.0 and 2.0, very fast copy and read rate, nice view for your computer desk, beautiful black glossy. Unfortunately it haven't standby mode, all the time its on. The WD software for backups and maintenance are goods, friendly interface. But the drive its plug and play, no need installations to run.

The easystore drive was a great value, 4TB for $95. Set up instantly, works on PC or Mac (comes NTFS formatted). Includes its own backup software and utilities. I use it for storage of movies. Makes a great drive to use with Plex server.

This drive was priced below anywhere else at Best Buy. As usual, they were courteous and prompt in filling the order. The drive operates quietly and works well with the USB3 interface. Quick read-writes and general high quality.
