Highly recommend

Recommend a working copy (kept plugged in all the time for auto back ups) and a master copy (plug in only when you're backing up to it manually). The hard drive (disk drives) only gets power when the power cable AND the USB are plugged in, leave the USB unplugged on the master copy until you're actually backing up to it. The hard drive (disk drive) will last a least twice as long by not activating it until you need it.

Western Digital over Seagate

Better than Seagate external drives because...

I've had both seagate and WD external drives and the main reason I prefer WD drives is their enclosure has vents to cool the hard drive. Heat is always the worst enemy of electronics. The seagate drives, have a design that look like vents but they are all sealed. The WD drives have been great 3 years into having them.
