Still trying to install

WD My Book comes with a wonderfully simple diagram on how to install. Unfortunately it didn't work. I attempted to solve problem online with tech support and had no success. They gave me a step by step instructions on how to solve the issue, but I found them to be too vague and I got stuck. I then called support and after spending time with someone that I had trouble understanding, I made it through a portion of the process. Now I have to wait 36 HOURS for the drive to be erased to zeros! So I have to keep my computer on for that time. Once this process is done, I have to continue on to the next step. It shouldnt be this complicated. Not happy.

not compatible with Windows 7 Backup and Restore

Even though the box says "formatted for NTFS for Windows 8 or higher, Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating system", this drive cannot be used for Windows 7 Backup and Restore without reformatting. If this would have been disclosed somewhere on the product description it wouldn't have been so bad, but I had to find out the hard way, after two attempts at backup, both times ending with an I/O error message. Researching this error message on the internet ultimately led me to a page on the WD website acknowledging that, "This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from an "Advanced Format" (AFD) drive which use 4K physical sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem. " The page goes on to give instructions for reformatting the drive using a downloadable WD tool. I followed these instructions, and then the drive worked fine for the backup. But they should have told me up front, and should not have hidden this page so deeply on their website. Thus the 2 star rating. I don't have confidence in this drive, and am waiting for the next incompatibility that they didn't tell me about.. The WD website page that addresses this problem is here:

I really like the WD My Book external drive. IT has good speed loading and viewing files. My only complaint is that you can not view movies stored on the drive in ISO format, I had to convert them to MP4 to be able to view them directly on the TV.

The WD - My Book 4TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive is a good drive with a lot of storage. I haven't have a lot of luck with the WD portable drives, since I've gone through 3 of them is less than 3 years. I got this because it's on sale and needed a lot of storage with my huge collections of movies (5gb to 15gb in size per movie), home movies and photos. Hope this will last a bit longer.

Just plug in and back up all your files. I don't recommend the WD software because I find them to be difficult to navigate when you just want to copy your files as a backup.

I bought this Hard drive because 500GB was not enough to store all my xbox one games. I've had this for awhile now and haven't had any issues at all. Everything loads great and I have it running all the time!

Bad for XBOX One

I bought this in Dec 2015 as a Christmas gift for myself as an external storage for my XBOX One. I purchase all of my games Digitally The 4TB size helped in the fact that I could keep all of my games on hand rather than re-downloading them. The fist month it worked perfectly, after that my games started crashing. Surprisingly it happened slowly, one crash a week, then every other day, every day, until I couldn't access my games at all.I thought my XBOX had died but every game that was on the physical system worked. I don't know if I got a DUD WD or if it was dropped in the warehouse but I have had far better success with the 5TB Seagate. Thank goodness for the protection plan!
