    Good alternative to external HD

WD MyCloud was fairly simple to install and get running. Android and iPhone apps that support are also pretty straightforward. Software allows as much or as little control for user access as you need. It's a great alternative to limited space on other cloud services. Only complaint is the streaming of videos, as the streaming speed to a variety of devices is less than adequate, with multiple buffering pauses in a 5min. video. This problem seems to be worse for Apple devices (iPhone, iPad), but even happens with my DLNA devices on the network.

This external storage has been a life saver. As a Drop box and Samsung user, I was allotted up to 50 GB of free storage for a limited time. Well that limited time came to an end and I needed storage. This ext hd has definitely helped a lot of my storage & viewing issues. I love being able to coonect to the hd via my Smart tv to view videos that are stored on it. My issues include large mp4 files take forever to load when reviewing on PC. I contacted customer, he recommended a GB router. It's difficult to move files from folders when using app via phone. Other than that this is a great product and their customer service is great.

I purchased this product and it took several hours to set up, initially. The online resources mentioned in the quick start guide had changed so it was difficult to find the correct links for driver updates and for Mac OS setup. Technical support from Western Digital was able to quickly help me find the needed software. The unit has been performing very well since then. I'm quite pleased with it. Locally, it can be mounted as a share from Windows or a device on a Mac. Remotely, the company supports a site to link you with your cloud storage so there is a convenient web interface (similar to OneDrive or DropBox).

Pretty easy set up, downloads pretty fast from WiFi. Wish I could attach a USB directly, but you can run it through a router if you don't want to transfer data over WiFi.

Good option for an external hard drive. The WD apps are easy to use and transfer files directly from your mobile device to the drive via wi-fi. It feels like you immediately have plenty more storage for photos and movies which tend to take the most space on mobile devices.

It's a great plug and play device. You can probably get away with jsut a plain external HDD plugged into your router by USB, but the interface is so easy with this and the price is much lower(due to external power source, most likely) that it's really a great option. It will take a ethernet port on your router, so make sure you have a free one.

This a really good beginners nas device. The usb port for extension great. Its only a few bucks cheaper than a regular external devixe. I would recommend it to anybody who look for set up a network drive. I use it to backup all my pics from wife and my phone over wifi. No connecting to itunes or paying for extra space on icloud.

My wife and I each have our own MacBooks and use our gopro cameras quite a bit. The problem we had is that we would end up with really large files that we would save to each of our computers. We would work on them individually but not really share our projects between computers. Having the My Cloud made it easy to transfer our videos and projects to one central location so that we both have access from our Macs as well as our phones and iPads. Setup was easy and intuitive, you don't need to have high a high technical IQ to get started. We also setup individual password protected folders so that we don't have to share everything with each other. I hesitated to buy it at first, but I am so glad I did. I have yet to run into a problem or negative with my My Cloud.

There's not much to say about a product that does exactly what it's supposed to do. I brought it home plugged in the Ethernet cable, plugged in the power and boom, there it was in my windows explorer as WD Cloud - nothing else to do. I wish that it did come with a user's manual, but I pulled that off the WD site so I could learn how to map it to a drive letter. So far ... in a month ... no complaints - just an extra little blue light on my desk.

This thing is awesome! Easy setup and lots of storage. Love the fact that I can access it from anywhere via the net. Need lots of storage for backup or whatever but don't want to pay for subscription cloud storage? The WD MyCloud is your answer.

I purchased this after reviewing all other cloud drives, this one comes with easy to use software, the storage is huge and I've barely used 3% of it. You can also use your iphone to access the drive and watch movies, view photos etc.

Is very convenient and also that you can access remotely and not necessarily with the app. While it took me a while to find out how to do it remotely and calls to customer support which while the Rep had very good manners seems did not know that in this case you have to access it with another email address that you have to add to your Cloud Access / WDmycloud.com, you will use the same User name but as I wrote add different email address otherwise will give you an error. Also make sure you have java installed in the computer you are accessing it from, before log in into wd2go.com.

Easy to setup, easy to move files into and can be accessed from anywhere. What I liked the most is the WD cloud app for your phone allows you to stream music from the WD MyCloud drive at home even where you are driving. (not for people who do not have unlimited data plans)

I had a previous wireless NAS drive that developed a problem so I needed to replace it. The WD MyCloud works much better in my usecase than the previous Seag**** drive. I have it set up so multiple PCs in the household can save directly to the drive. Also, all of us use Norton to backup user files automatically. We can all use WD MyCloud to backup our PCs. Plus, we can store to the drive from our smartphones and tablets. I’m scoring it at 5-Stars even though I had to call WD Support to get the drive setup to store directly to the drive. WD Support was very helpfull and quickly got me setup properly. After the call I was able to get the rest of the family operational. Hats off to WD on a good product and even better customer support. It changed a 4-Star score to 5. They have made me a loyal customer by standing behind their stuff!

This device is easy to install and set up. We got it because it can be connected via ethernet to our home network and can be accessed by our Windows and Apple devices. Some other cloud devices only have wi-fi network access. You can download and use the WD Cloud interface software or access it via Windows Explorer. We haven't really used it from an Apple PC yet. I'm still having some kinks with it that I haven't worked out yet but am overall pretty satisfied with it.

This thing is easy to git up and running. All you need to do is just plug it in and that's about it. It's just like other hard drives but you have all of your stuff in a cloud that is all yours. One cool thing about it is that you can plug in a second hard drive and expand your cloud. The cloud is only available over Wi-Fi. The thing I like the most is that you can have a whole family watching movies in separate rooms at the same time off of this hard drive. Does not work all that well with iPads

Crashes My Laptop Every Time I Use It

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have a Windows 7 laptop with 100s of GBs of data that I decided I should finally back up. I just bought the 3 TB WD My Cloud model, hooked it up to my wireless network, configured it (not very intuitive), and finally got it so I could at least drag-and-drop folders and files into my "share" on the drive. At that point I hooked it up to a wired router with Ethernet cables so I could transfer large amounts of data faster as recommended by a sheet inside the package. By the way, the documentation in the package is virtually non-existent (1 large sheet of icons and arrows with some URLs). No matter how I tried, my Windows desktop (Windows Explorer) eventually started restarting at the slightest prod. For example, when I first moved the installed icons to where I wanted them on my desktop and then right-clicked (want to "Refresh" to save their locations), Windows Explorer IMMEADIATELY restarted. I finally got it to stop doing that and eventually had the icons where I wanted, but it took a lot of doing. I really do not know how an average consumer could possibly get this product to work; I have a Computer Science degree and have been able to do anything needed with my Windows PCs for nearly three decades. After hooking the drive with an Ethernet cable to a wired router, I dragged-and-dropped all the folders in my Documents folder onto my "share" on the WD My Cloud drive and everything started to copy. Right off I noticed it was extremely slow copying individual small files (0-64 KB) at about 1 per second (I had 20K files to copy); however, when it came to some multi-GB files I had, it was tearing through them at about 10 Mbytes/second over a 100 Mbps connection for about 80% network utilization. However, while watching the megabytes count off, I noticed the file transfer stopped at 999 MB for 25 seconds, then continued for the next almost 1 GB, then paused for another 25 seconds, etc, and kept doing this until between 9-10 GBytes of total data transferred (not just a single file). I got a screen capture of the network utilization chart produced by Task Manager that shows the behavior (included with the review as an accompanying picture; note the narrower gap between the end of one large file and the start of the next large file). After the 8-10 GBytes total copying, my desktop Windows Explorer started restarting again and then different system processes spat out windows with errors that had killed them, etc. Eventually, without exception (I tried this four separate times), I received the "blue screen of death" (BSOD). At this point, I am ready to return this product to Best Buy. I have 260 GB of laptop data to back up and my wife has probably double that on her desktop, and it is very apparent we will not be able to get this to work. The WD My Cloud drive itself seems to work, excepting the 25-second pauses (I think it is copying data to RAM and then writing the 1 GB of data to disk during the 25 seconds because I can hear the drive seeking), the near constant Windows Explorer restarts, and the horrific BSOD every 8-10 GBytes of data. Since when I drag multiple folders onto a "share" on the WD My Cloud results in the drive first creating every folder and sub-folders BEFORE copying any data files, I cannot tell where the file copying died, and I am not going to open 260 folders in a hierarchy to figure it out and then try to copy individual files and folders to try to get it to work. I have not got that kind of time. I am boxing it back up after spending 6 hours trying to copy my data onto this drive without any real success, at least as measured in time spent and backed up files.
