Its not that great of a washer if you ask me. I hate that I can not set a water level, the machine decides itself. Many times I washed something black and it comes out with soap still in the fabric. I have to rinse two more times to get it out and that doesn't always work. And I always have my washer set for second rinse. I would never have bought this washer if I knew what I know now. Not recommended.

The lock cost about 200 if it breaks and the washer won't work without it.

My standard efficiency washer broke so I did a lot of research online for a high efficiency washer as a replacement. I did not want a front load due to all of the compliants about water leaking and them smelling pretty bad after a few months so I striclty looked at top loaders. I read many of the reviews on this model and saw some complaints about clothes not getting cleaned or the washer being loud. I would like to tell you my opinion...
I have a 1 year old son, my wife and I. we do about 2 loads of laundry a day. I found the clothes have no problem being cleaned even if they are heavily soiled, on the regular cycle. I did find that some clothes that had dried stains, like baby formula or food, did not come out very well so now I use the heavy duty cycle on the washer or just change the soil level on the washer and it cleans perfectly. There were complaints about the clothes still having soap on them when the washer was finished...I had this problem as well but I found out my wife was putting the same amount of soap in the machine as she did when we had the standard efficiency washer. As soon as she used the correct amount this was fixed...but I also like to use the extra rinse cycle on all loads...but thats my preference. As far as the extra noise...it does make some clicking noises in the beginning because it performs a series of spins to measure how much of a load you have in the machine which also determines how much water to put in it. I find that very short in time and the actual noise from the machine washing is about a quarter of the noise level my old machine made. Plus...if I have to put up with a minute of some noise (again not noisy in my opinion) to save money in water and energy its worth it. In have found my clothes get very clean in a short amount of time using much less energy nad water

When we moved and had to leave our old washer and dryer behind, we ended up using the machines that were in the house we moved into. The washer sounded like a jet engine (the tranny was going out) and the dryer never did work. I limped by with the old washer for 7 months, until it became obvious that my clothes were not gettting clean anymore.
So shortly after pay day we were in BB and looking at washers. On something of a whim we purchased this model for both the capacity and the water saving features, pretty important along the Front Range where we are semi arid and water can be costly.
I have had the machine for almost a week and have been very very pleased with it. Does it make some noise, yes. It is a machine after all, But honetly, my dryer is louder. The noises are different from a tradtional washer, however nowhere near annoying. The laundry room sits right off our family room and it doesn't interfere with enjoying the TV.
My clothes are getting clean. In some cases, it is removing things the old washer just wasn't' getting out anymore. I have five people in my family, three of them very active kids,so I take full advantage of the larger capacity. I have had some instances of things getting twisted, but not so seriously as to cause damage.
Overall, I am completely happy with this machine. I can't speak to the durability yet, but as far as all other features, it's great.

Very good machine for entry level HE Top loader

I purchased this set and have been very impressed. From previous reviews I've heard people say the HE Top Loaders don't clean your clothes well, but I can definitely debunk that myth.
I really like the bang for your buck on this pair. It's doesn't take too long to do a load of laundry, and you can do MUCH bigger loads. The spin out is better than an average top loader as well.
Whirlpool has done a really good job on this washer, very good performance for a good low price.

Obnoxious machine

I'll be honest, I purchased this washer impulsively because the one I wanted was out of stock so the salesperson offered me $100 off this one, so I said ok. It looked like a good machine and was a good deal, and I liked the capacity and controls. But, after 2 weeks and about 8 or so loads, I had to return it. It made such an annoying, repetative pulsing buzzing-type sound during the wash cycle, that I couldn't stand it. And it was not a quiet sound by any means either. Quite loud. I thought I would get used to it, but I did not. And I knew it would be annoying to guests as well. Over and over.... maybe 50 times or so during a wash. It was like nails on a chalkboard to me. I'm not sure how to describe the sound other than that, but you can go to Whirlpool.com and in one of their FAQ/videos, it has snippets of the various sounds that the machine makes that you can hear, and this sound is on there. So I know it wasn't a problem with my machine. If only I'd known before buying it. Overall this is a loud machine.... the other sounds it makes throught the cycle are loud....so I wouldn't recommend this machine for someone who would have it near their kitchen or living area, like me. It has an annoying musical tune as well that it plays 4 times when it's finished. I realized this could be turned off, but then there wouldn't have been an indicator that it was done. The 2nd thing is that the lid locks when it starts, and if you forgot to put a piece of clothing in, you have to push the pause button and then wait for it to stop spinning or do whatever it's doing at the time, before it will unlock. This took over a minute one of the times that I tried....even in the manual it says this can take "several minutes". I also didn't like this feature because I couldn't open the lid to check on the load through the cycle, like a traditional washer, and to see how it washes the clothes out of curiosity. It's weird that it even has to lock - it's a top loader for peet's sake - the clothes aren't going to fall out. It also didn't seem like my clothes come out smelling as nice like the detergent fragrance (which i like) as they did with my old standard washer, which I assume is because less detergent is used. In addition, be advised that you will have to use the Afresh (or some other sort of cleaner) to clean the washer once a month or so. Apparantly these HE washers have a problem with mildew and musty smells after that long if you don't clean them, which again is something I didn't realize when I purchased. I know, I know... my fault for not doing my homework *before* buying. Also be advised that the cycles are longer than a traditional machine. The buttons are also a little hard to push - I wouldn't recommend for an older person or someone with arthritis or something, if they have to do alot of laundry.
Aside from these issues (the main one being the sound), it seemed to do a good job at washing the clothes. I don't usually have many stains on my clothes so I don't know how well it does at getting out tough stains, but for a regular wash, my clothes seemed to have been cleaned properly. I also washed a queen size comforter in there w/o any problems. I didn't use fabric softener or bleach for any of my loads either, so I can't say weather that works well or not.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this machine to my friends or family.
There are more reviews about this particular machine on other websites. Don't make the same mistake I did - do your homework :)

Pros and Cons

I do wish I could just set it at one cycle and have it stay there so I wouldn't have to set it everytime. I wash in cold water and this machine wants me to set it up. I enjoy knowing the time the cycle will take and that it spins the clothes so well that the drying time is shortened. The clothes come out more wrinkled because of this but seems it doesn't matter when I take them out of the dryer. The down side of that is,if I don't want to put a blouse/shirt in the dryer, it is VERY wrinkled. Love the large capacity and the jingle that tells me the cycle is complete. Very quiet too.

This washer was delivered and installed at the end of October. Since then I have done numerous loads of laundry and I love the performance of this machine. I am extremely pleased with how clean the clothes are at the end of each cycle. I have washed everything from delicates to heavy duty items. I have a 10 year old grandson who sometimes looks as if he has burrowed in a dirt tunnel and I was little skeptical about his clothes getting clean, especially after reading some of the other reviews. Well, I had nothing to worry about. All of the dirt and stains were removed in one wash! I am extremely happy with this machine and will recommend it to everyone!

The entire family quickly learned how to use this washer. It had more optional cycles and choices than our last machine had, but they were easy to understand and I think will take better care of all fabrics. I'm quite happy with the machine. It's energy and water efficient and that is a big plus.

Our washer and dryer is on the second floor of our home. This washer does not shake the entire house! It is very quiet, easy to load and use. And doesn't make a horrible buzzing noise when the cycle is done. Everything comes out great. I even washed a very over stuffed queen size comforter with no problem. Great that I was able to receive rebates from my electric company and water company. Very happy with my purchase. Best Buy delivery and removal of the old washer was wonderful!

We love the machine. Not a big fan of the fisheye models and wanted to stick with a top load, but high efficiency machine. We really like the open tub, no complaints about the wash cycles and everything comes out clean. Don't forget to buy some High Efficiency detergent... had to take back the big Costco tub of suds and buy some Tide... but you really notice the difference. The family is really enjoying this model

I love our new washer! Everything gets clean, including comforters. Indeed it does make different noises than regular machines, but obviously nothing to worry about. We use ours 4-5 times a week, and have had it about 6 months. Lid-lock is a non-issue since it has a pause button. Great price for anyone looking to be a little greener!
