too many design flaws

let's start with the good stuff. it does clean good. after experimenting with different detergents and getting average results i tried the finish powerball and now everything comes out very clean. even my glassware comes out cleaner than ever, though still not as clean as handwashing. so, maybe it is because of the detergent, but still, i'll give the washer the benefit of the doubt here! second good thing, it's much more quiet than the unit it replaced, a ten year old maytag, even though it doesn't have the sound reduction package. final good thing, Consumer Reports lists Whirlpool as the most reliable maker for dishwashers and most other appliances as well, so it should last a long time. now, the bad stuff. unlike my older unit it doesn't have a self-cleaning filter. in my experience what this means is that you either have to pre-wash your dishes every time or clean the filter after every load. not a huge deal, but this is work i never had to do before, and either solution just uses more water. not good. also, like my older unit, this one does not have hidden controls. on my old maytag it was not an issue. on this one though, either the controls are at an angle that makes them more easily bumped or they are just more sensitive because so many times i have seen the buttons lit up and ready to go after someone closed the door or was working near it. yes, you can engage a lock to disable the controls but i still feel that should only be needed to prevent kids from messing with it, not because the controls are overly sensitive. finally, there are the rack tines. on my old maytag they were angled to hold plates upright better. these are pefectly straight. this leads to plates leaning over against each other every time you slide the rack out or shut it. also, it isn't too bad for thin plates that are reasonably flat, but for thicker, heavier plates that are deeper, have a more bowl-like shape, it is terrible. they don't fit well, they are too close to each other, they lean over too much too easily and it is almost impossible to line up more plates next to them. and the two rows of tines are staggered slightly to allow plates to be next to each other. but for some reason, on one side, at the midway point the tines become spaced differently. this means that the plates in the row next to it no longer line up correctly; you have to leave an empty space or two on each side or the plates won't fit next to each other any more. overall, it seems well made (sturdy), is quiet, cleans well and comes from a reliable company. but, there are just too many design flaws. i truly regret this purchase!

Costly repairs

This dishwasher has good features and when it works it works well. My issue is that after 2 years the heating element went out and had to be replaced at a cost of $260. 2 years have gone by and guess what - new heating element needed again. It makes no sense to have to spend $260 to repair this maching every 2 years. It's not cost effective and I know a lot of people who have other brands that have not needed to do expensive repairs every 2 years. We'll be replacing this with any brand other than Whirlpool. Our 4 year old microwave (also Whirlpool Gold) just died a week after the dishwasher. Appears the fan has burned out so we need a new over the range stainless microwave now. Whirlpool does not appear to be built to last. I guess they need the extra income from high repair costs.

Adequate replacement for prior Whirlpool Gold unit

It cleans dishes well and reasonably quietly, too. Only complaint: it beeps when you open and close the door, or leave the door open for over a minute (it beeps every minute or two, thereafter). Same with delay cycle. I've contacted Whirlpool technical/engineering, but there is no way to silence this annoyance. I'd have returned it to Best Buy if it weren't for the 25% restocking fee and additional shipping for a more expensive (KitchenAid) replacement. Oh, well.

WORST Dishwasher I've Ever Owned

This is the WORST dishwasher I've ever owned. Immediately after having our BRAND NEW dishwasher installed several months ago, the motor had to be replaced. A few weeks later, another major component broke and had to be replaced. Two months after that, the dishwasher wouldn't even start. They wanted to replace yet another part but we demanded a new (that is, another new) dishwasher. We've had the new one for several weeks, and it's still sub-par. You ALWAYS have to run this model on the additional "hi-temp wash" setting, which uses more energy and thus costs more to run. Forget being able to use the so-called "adaptive setting" or anything else--The dishes will NOT come out clean (and I'm talking about basic things like milk in a glass. It will literally come out dirtier than it went in). Moreover, I detest the "anywhere plus silverware basket": I'm 5'8" and wear a size 3.75 ring, so I have long, skinny fingers. Still, I have a hard time getting my fingers in and out of the tiny silverware slots. And while the basket *goes* anywhere, that doesn't mean it *stays* anywhere--it's not very secure in any of the possible places. Like the basket, there are numerous other clips available to use to hold things--they're worthless, and in fact a deterrence. They are not secure, move around, and get in the way of the major racks from sliding in and out. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DISHWASHER!!!!!!! I will never buy another Whirlpool.

Interior space not satisfactory

Also, too many plastic grids which further limit space. We have since exchanged it for another whirlpool which has the utensil basket on the door. Much better. We have had whirlpool washers for 30 years and are pleased with their performance.

We purchased this dishwasher 4 years ago and recently had to move out of our home and leave it behind. We bought a dishwasher for our new home and it was $700. The new dishwasher was such a piece of you know what that we brought it back and bought this one again.
This dishwasher not only cleans beautifully but it also DRIES the dishes and you can put them away right after the cycle. This dishwasher is AMAZING!!! I recommend it 100%!

I've had this dishwasher about 3-4 years, & am here looking for a new one. I have a small family of 3, & have used this about every 2-3 days. The digital touch panel has died. The lights light up & blink on their own & look like an alien space ship. When we can get it to run, the heated dry will not work. We called an appliance repair man & did what he suggested, which didn't work. He also told us that Whirlpool parts are quite expensive. I'm not a happy costomer!!

Great dishwasher

I bought this dishwasher from Best Buy 8 months ago and couldn't be more pleased with it. It is quiet and performs well. I like the removable silverware basket that can be placed on the door or in the upper rack. It cleans well and I haven't experienced any problems with the racks when loading. The tines in the upper rack are adjustable and can be laid flat on one side to allow for different configurations. If you select all the options when starting it, the cycle can be a bit long but I don't need it to run back to back loads. A great buy for the money.
