Not quite as great as Brill Bruisers, still great

Carl Newman's credentials as perhaps our greatest creator of hooky pop rock keep growing. Whiteout Conditions isn't quite as consistently catchy as the NPs 2014 Brill Bruisers but it has some of his most irresistible songs ever. Whiteout Conditions' title track is a masterpiece, with rhymes inside of rhymes and a driving beat. The record makes ample use of Neko Case's beautiful vocals. Newman has her harmonizing, alternating vocals and singing lead on the terrific This is the World of the Theater. There's a little more of a synth/drum machine vibe than on previous NP records but Case's warm voice and Newman's tight song construction keep the songs very appealing, as is perhaps best shown on the excellent High Ticket Attractions. The contrast normally provided by the songs of the eccentric Dan Bejar, who is absent from a NP record for the first time, is missed a bit and the middle of the record is a bit insubstantial. But Whiteout Conditions is mostly great, finishing with the buoyant Clockwise and Avalanche Alley.

The new CD is even more accessible than Brill Bruisers and Together, and AC Newman has really developed as a songwriter.

Front man AC Newman is at a peak in his songwriting talent on this album, the band's first without Dan Bejar. His absence does not deter the rest of the members, especially the harmonies between Newman and Neko Case. The highlights are the title track and "High Ticket Attractions" but every song but "Second Sleep" could make a great single.
