Very good game to learn about flying during the war. Takes a lot of skill to learn how to fly at first but once you get in the air very good action

Fun to play and shoot other planes. Wish the game had American planes to fly though. For me some of the missions are very hard to complete in 1 player mode.

I echo the other poor reviews for this game. My husband is a plane and history fan, so this game was perfect for him. Unfortunately, he found the game impossibly difficult. Two hours and several hundred swear words later, the wii went off and the game went on the shelf... never to return to the tv again. And also like the other reviews, he was upset about the lack of American planes. It just doesn't make sense that they weren't included.

I was fortunate enough to have the best wife on the planet, and for fathers day combo birthday, I recieved a Wii w/sports. By the next day I wanted to get more games to play. I'm an old PC jukie from may years gone by, so a console game unit is completely new to me. We stopped into the local Best Buy and snooped around.
I was looking for some fun things the whole family could do, including my 4 year old grandson. So we picked up Party Games. I then spotted WWII Aces, and picked it up immediately. I've been wanting to get at least a half decent flight simulator for a while now, and the one I got for my PC was a demo and needed a joystick.
The game takes a moment to load up as it is rather heavy on the graphic files. Graphics over all are above average, but if your expecting to be flying and have it look exactly like the real thing, you will be dissapointed. Buildings, landscape, machinery, and the planes are all very accurately depicted. Just expect them to be high end game like but not exactly like real.
You get to choose who your flying for. There are three choices, England, Germany, and Russia. Sadly they did not include US, which would have perfectly rounded out the lot. Each country has a selection of 4 different planes to choose from. Once you've chosen your plane you have several playing options. You can choose between a specific mission, and dogfights for example. Once you've made those selections you select your theatre. Fly over the English channel, France, Berlin, Moscow or a variety of other locations. Depending on what type of gameplay you chose you can select weapons, number of opponets, and difficulty level.
The game is designed to use three different Wii controller configurations. Remote only, and two different combos of Remote and Nunchuck. Remote only is the default. Plane control depends on what set up you have. I've been using the Remote only default. The remote is like a joystick, pull up to go up, push down to go down, and twist left or right to bank into turns. My controller always seemed to be pointing way to the left of where it should, but I can easily play the game so its not an issue for me. You can control landing gear up/down, engine speed, stall/airbrake, banking and of course drop bombs, rockets and shoot the machine guns.
It took me a few tries to get used to flying using the Remote, but once I got the hang of it I was chasing the enimies like crazy. I like to play dogfight against a reaistic 1 or 2 opponents when I am playing single player. If we had 4 remotes and 4 players playing, we can up the total number of enimies as high as 15. Thats far too many for a single fighter to handle at once. Your mission is to shoot down as many enimie planes as you can, and blow up as many enimie installations on the ground as you can.
I find that after about 5 planes down, and the next one is shot up, that they run. If you follow them you'll eventually get out of the designated battelfield area. You must turn back and get back into the battelground area within the time shown on your screen or the mission ends as if you left the battleground. If the enimie starts to run, go full throttle and chase them early or you'll not get much of a chance of downing any more planes and will just have to have fun blasting everything you can find on the ground.
Your screen shows your prop, and your targeting ring. It takes some practice to get your enimie in the ring so you can hit them when you fire. The catch is that if they are banking or climbing or the distance is long, you must compensate or even if you have them dead in the sights, you'll not score a hit. Enimie positions are shown as Red arrows. These go all the way around the border so you know their position at all times. In other scenarios, you'll have different color arrows that have a specific meaning for that mission/gameplay. These are all shown at all times. You also have a meter that shows your health and if your guns are overheating. If you shoot for more than a specific amount of time, 9 seconds in Dogfight for example, your guns will overheat and not work until they cool down.
One tip I can give you other gamers out there. Hook your Wii up so that the sound can play through your home theatre surround sound system. Those bombs going off make the house shake!!
Overal, I think this game is a ton of fun. Is it top of the line, no, but its better than a lot of them. Graphics are on par with Fighter Ace 2 for PC, and I think better than MS Flight Simulator. I wish they would have included the US forces and let us fly some P51's, P40's, F4's, B24's or P38's

This game has bad graphics. It handles fairly well. It is way too hard and isn't fun because of the difficulty.

I have played many games over the years and this is one of the most difficult, and not fun games, I have ever played. I see others say it is easy, I don't see how. I played on Wii. At one point the was me and 47 enemy planes. I would shoot down one and 6 more would show up. It took way too many hits to bring down a plane. Suddenly it said the mission was over return to base. I had to fly through a blue square that was quite a distance away. Before I could get there, there were 24 planes behind me shooting at me. There was no where to go. The entire screen was nothing but shots from them. This happened in every mission. I was playing on the "easy" level. Someone needs to look up the definition of easy.
I got so frustrated that I threw the disc away. I played for 6 hours a day for 3 days and only got to the 3rd mission, and I'm not sure why some of them ended.
Overall this game is way too difficult for the easy level, and does not give information on the controls. There is no view from the cockpit, only from outside the plane.
I would only recommend this game to people I hate.

if u like dogfighting i would highly recomend this game. it is a little easy but if u play it on hard then the levels are amazing. the planes are also amazing. the controls are easy to just pick up and fly there was no need for a lot of practice. i also liked that it is 2 player.

As an avid gamer and WWII buff, I was pleased when my wife surprised me with WWII Aces as an anniversary gift. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that the thirty dollars could have been better spent elsewhere.
While the game's graphics are marginal, I held out hope for content and spent several hours with my son flying bland and unreasonably difficult (read: neigh impossible, even on "easy") missions. My optimism was not rewarded. While I encourage and thoroughly enjoy challenging video games of all flavors, WWII Aces is too unforgiving to maintain any level of enjoyment. To add insult to injury; in multiplayer games, if either one of the players is destroyed the mission fails utterly.
Cons:
- Unreasonably difficult
- Marginal graphics
- Absolutely no background or flavor to the missions
Pros:
- "Upgrade" skins (different colors) to the aircraft upon advancement
It is rare for a game to frustrate me to the point of writing a bad review. WWII Aces is that rare occasion. I would not recommend to anyone, regardless of cost.
