I bought this receiver to connect into my multi-room home theater system. This was the lowest level component that includes wifi/musiccast. It was easy to set up and connected to the network immediately

Beautiful Sound and Great Controller App

I love the sound and control options, but the remotes for AV equipment always confuse me. Luckily the Yamaha MusicCast Controller app is very intuitive and can do everything I need to, so I don't use the controller at all.

This system is easy to set up and easy to connect to your TV or stereo. If connecting to a TV, I recommend getting a center line speak (Not a sound bar) to complete the full sound experience.

Works and sounds really good. Passthrough for 4k HDR works really well. A lot of the other features are nice. Still trying to figure out how to control with Alexa. Set up was pretty straight forward.

Can't Go Wrong With A Yamaha

This is my second Yamaha receiver I've bought. I got this one as an upgrade for 3D technology (which I'm probably the last person who still loves it) and for when I upgrade my TV to 4K. The bluetooth and wifi features are awesome so I can stream music through it from my phone. A lightning storm fried the motherboard on it 2 months after I bought it, even with surge protection. Best Buy installed a new one under warranty and I have never had a problem with it. Yamaha makes good receivers. I prefer this and a system of good wired or wireless surround sound speakers over a soundbar any day.

Awesome receiver. Replace with an onkyo and it blows it out the water. Only cons is the reciever doesn’t turn on when arc and cec is enabled when you turn the tv on.

We bought this receiver to push our 5.1 surround system after our older reviever stopped working. Very easy to set up and configure for our room, and sounds great. Love it.

+ Wireless Surround - Clunky UI

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Pros: - Wireless surround option - Easy auto-calibration with the included mic - "Cinema-DSP" does enhance surround effects without noticeable processing elements Cons: - Dated and hard to navigate UI - For larger rooms, the "sweet spot" is only around 60-97 - everything else is too quiet - Occasional drop-outs when used with the wireless surround feature, even with clear line of sight for all speakers Summary: First, I would like to note that my primary reason for selecting this particular AVR was for the option to have two Yamaha Musiccast 20 speakers synced with it through the Musiccast app for wireless surrounds. This, to my knowledge, is the only way to have high-quality home theater speakers in the front while natively supporting wireless rear speakers. I have these paired with the Klipsch Reference series speaker line. The sound quality is great - similar, but noticeably better than my outgoing Sony DHR-770. The cinema DSP processing does add a more enveloping surround effect to existing DD, DD+, and DTS formats. One note is that the only "useable" volume range in a moderate-sized room is 60-97 - everything else sounds too quiet. The setup of the AVR itself is straightforward, with an easy to use auto-calibration option that does a good job to calibrate to your room and speaker configuration. The UI is pretty terrible for 2020 though - especially bad is the fact that if you switch to the AVR input from another source (ie, Netflix), the AVR goes straight into streaming music from Musiccast. When used in conjunction with two Yamaha WX-021 Musiccast speakers for wireless surrounds, this receiver is much more appealing. This allows you to have surround sound without the need to run wires. In use, there are periodic signal losses between the speakers and the receiver, even with all components maintaining a clear line of sight to one another. When watching a 2+ hour movie with lots of surround effects (ex: Harry Potter) expect to hear a static pop and then recalibration twice throughout the movie. Overall, the setup works and sounds quite well. I am willing to live with some slight hiccups when weighed against the convenience and aesthetics of not having to run wires. Iw ould recommend this to anyone looking for a 5.1 system in a great room or family room, but would recommend running wires for those who have the room to support it. The total package this receiver offers is well worth the money - even if the wireless surround option is of no concern to you. 4/5

Love it, I have three and connect them with the Musicast app to listen in my living room (used with tv), my pool and my garage. Already use Napster and Sirius which are integrated into the Musicast system so its a more cost effective and more versatile system than sonos. The only thing is those two apps you can't use the complete version but it still works great. I love being in the pool and turning on the system with my phone and controlling music, volume on each receiver and even individual speaker zoning, plus Yamaha just makes a great receiver!

Purchased this for my sons family room. It was a simple 5.1 set up with lower end speakers. This receiver has all of the bells and whistles and has enough power to drive your speakers. The remote is well laid out. No pre-outs, but at this price point I think that should not be a ding. Purchasing on sale makes it even a better deal. I don't think I would choose to use this to drive mid to higher end speakers. As you spend more money of speakers, you have got to also match with similar drivers.

This unit was purchased to replace a Yamaha RX-V473 purchased in 2013. The video failed in 2015 (pink screen), was repaired, failed again in 2016 and was used for next 3 years for audio only. The current model RX-V485BL looks and operates similar to old unit and hopefully the video will last longer than the V473. We have a 5.1 speaker system and and set the sound mode to 5ch Stereo and do not use any of the other sound field effects. We also use the YPAO function to automatically and easily setup the speaker settings. We do not use the am or fm functions.
